IPL 2025 : Can Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai Indians Reclaim Dominance In IPL

The Mumbai Indians will begin their campaign in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) with an aim to reclaim their past glory. The joint-most successful team in the history of the tournament Mumbai Indians Team hasn’t been at their best in the past four seasons as they’ve qualified just once for the playoffs and finished at the bottom twice.

Hence, MI have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming edition as they aim to write another golden chapter in the rich history of the franchise. Mumbai had a lot of issues to deal with in the previous season as their large fanbase didn’t accept the sudden transfer of leadership from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya.

Mumbai Indians (MI), the most successful franchise in Indian Premier League (IPL) history with five titles, faced a disastrous campaign in 2024, finishing last under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. With a revamped 23-member squad, MI is set to bounce back and chase a record sixth title in 2025. MI’s dominance in the IPL is well-established, however the 2024 season marked a stark departure from their usual excellence.

Mumbai Indians at the auction in IPL 2025

Mumbai Indians (MI), one of the most successful franchises in the IPL, recently unveiled their 2025 retention list, retaining five core players, including captain Hardik Pandya and veteran batsman Rohit Sharma.

Mumbai Indians are ready to start their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign in search of their sixth title. They have the joint-most number of trophies (5) in the history of IPL. (More Cricket News) The 18th season of the IPL is set to kickstart on 22 March with Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the opening match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Before the mega auction of IPL 2025, Mumbai Indians retained all their core players like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma. However, in the mega auction, they waited for 5 hours to purchase their first player. Thereafter, they picked New Zealand’s excellent fast bowler Trent Boult. Along with him, they picked up a few more powerful players.

Star Indian allrounder Hardik Pandya will continue to lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, and the squad features some of the biggest T20 stars including Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Tilak Varma, who were retained for Rs 16.30 crore, Rs 16.35 crore, Rs 18 crore, and Rs 8 crore, respectively, ahead of the IPL mega auction last year.

Last year, when Mumbai Indians traded Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans, everyone had a lot of criticism regarding that trade. The fans and even some of the players were not too pleased with that decision. This could be the reason behind their poor performance last season. Now, it will be interesting to see how Mumbai Indians do with this set of players for the new season.

The full-time MI captain, Hardik Pandya, will not be part of MI’s first match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on 23 March due to a ban for one match. Pandya suffered the ban for slow-over rate in the last match of the 17th season and the ban continued in the 18th season.

Rohit Sharma is expected to lead the side in his absence. He will be eligible to lead the team from the second match. Jasprit Bumrah’s injury may keep him out of the action for the first few matches but he is expected to join the team in the second half. Ryan Rickelton and Robin Minz are two left-handed batters who will be key players for MI this season. They have retained Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.

Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, Reece Topley, Will Jacks and Bevon Jacobs are overseas players who are expected to excel in this season. Arjun Tendulkar and Raj Angad Bawa are two youngsters in the squad.

Mumbai Indians SWOT Analysis

Despite retaining top players and introducing Hardik Pandya as captain, MI managed only four wins out of 14 matches. The lack of coordination, ineffective spin bowling, and Hardik’s struggle with leadership contributed to the downfall. Having finished last in the 2024 season, MI aims to turn the tide with a renewed strategy focused on a mix of experienced leaders and emerging talents

Strengths for MI in IPL 2025

Mumbai Indians have a strong batting line-up and an experienced bowling group with Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult leading from the front. Their core is untouched from the last edition, but the addition of Ryan Rickelton and Robin Minz has strengthened their batting prowess. Mitchell Santner and Pandya himself are two top-class all-rounders in the squad.

With experienced players like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav, MI’s batting lineup looks formidable. MI boast a powerful core of retained players, including fan-favorite Rohit Sharma, explosive batsman Tilak Varma, versatile T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, and pace leader Jasprit Bumrah. These well-oiled cricketers bring pedigree and panache.

Retaining Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah ensures MI’s leadership remains intact. Both Hardik and Rohit are powerful figures in the IPL circuit, each bringing a different leadership approach. Hardik’s dynamic presence as an all-rounder and Rohit’s batting consistency add stability and adaptability to the team.

MI’s lineup benefits from Suryakumar Yadav, who is known for his versatility and explosive batting. Paired with Rohit Sharma, MI’s batting remains a potent force, especially during powerplays. Adding young batsman Tilak Varma, who showed exceptional promise last season with 416 runs, bolsters their depth, and MI hopes his potential will continue to flourish alongside seasoned players.

The team’s second major strength is its versatile pace attack. Bumrah is a champion performer and the leader of the pack. His value is evident in his remarkable numbers in the last 4 overs, with 80 scalps at an average of 19.5. In IPL 2024, he had a solid season, taking 20 scalps at 16.80.

With Jasprit Bumrah leading the bowling unit, MI’s arsenal is one of the most formidable in the IPL. Bumrah’s ability to perform under pressure, especially in death overs, strengthens MI’s bowling lineup. His retention at ₹18 crore reflects MI’s priority in maintaining a reliable bowling core.

Deepak Chahar, known for his powerplay wickets, and the addition of Boult make MI a deadly side in the first six overs. Boult’s recent performance with Rajasthan Royals includes 45 scalps at 27.71, adding more firepower to the lineup. Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Deepak Chahar form a deadly trio that can dismantle any batting order. Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya provide stability and firepower in the middle overs.

Weaknesses of MI in IPL 2025

Spending ₹75 crore on five players, MI has used up a substantial part of their ₹120 crore purse. This leaves them with ₹45 crore for the auction, which could be restrictive when bidding for impact players. Although their core is secure, MI may face difficulties in filling gaps in the middle order and acquiring versatile all-rounders.

MI’s strategy this season did not include the retention of any uncapped players, focusing instead on established names and emerging talent like Tilak Varma. While this solidifies the team’s core, it leaves them without fresh, lesser-known talents who could have provided a surprise element.

Mumbai Indians have a weakness of injured players. Jasprit Bumrah is not fully fit and his injury concerns are not a good sign for the MI. Allah Ghazanfar and Lizaad Williams have pulled out of the season due to injury. They also lack a complete finisher at number seven or eight. Unavailability of some players might create some problems for the five-time champions.

The spin department remains MI’s Achilles heel. While Mitchell Santner is reliable, the lack of experienced Indian spinners could hurt them on spin-friendly pitches. MI’s backup options are filled with uncapped players who lack the experience to perform under pressure.

MI’s spin unit lacks strength, with Karn Sharma being the leading Indian spinner. He has 76 scalps from 84 matches but had an ordinary IPL 2024, averaging over 36 and conceding at 10.58. Once a regular from 2013-15, Karn has become a backup player with poor returns in recent years.

Mitchell Santner has had limited opportunities, playing just 18 matches in five seasons, taking 15 scalps at an average of 28.13. Due to their limited spin resources, MI might be forced to play Santner.

Opportunities for MI in IPL 2025

With limited spin options retained, MI has an opportunity to invest in specialist spinners during the auction. Given the importance of spin in IPL matches, especially in Indian conditions, strengthening this area could provide MI with a competitive edge. MI holds the Right to Match (RTM) card, which can be used to reclaim any uncapped players released into the auction pool. This option could allow MI to bring back promising players at a reasonable price, allowing them to add depth without significantly impacting their budget.

After a disastrous debut as MI captain, Hardik has the chance to prove his leadership skills and win back the fanbase. Rohit’s recent form has been inconsistent, and a successful IPL season could rejuvenate his career. MI needs to identify the right impact players. Naman is an ideal pick to start. If MI bats first, they can name three foreigners with Naman. When bowling, Rickelton might be considered, pushing batters down the order or utilizing Jacks in the middle.

With ₹45 crore remaining, MI can invest in a high-impact overseas all-rounder to support Hardik Pandya. This addition would balance MI’s squad by adding flexibility in both batting and bowling. They have a big opportunity to become the first team of IPL to win six titles. Their performance in the last IPL edition was below average and now they can forget that year and perform collectively to become the six-time champions this year. Hardik Pandya also needs to win the confidence of the home crowd with another IPL trophy.

Threats for MI in IPL 2025

MI’s success heavily depends on the retained players performing consistently. If key players like Bumrah or Suryakumar Yadav struggle with form or fitness, the team’s performance could suffer significantly. The decision to retain only five players also adds pressure on these individuals to lead MI’s resurgence. With limited funds, MI faces stiff competition in the auction from other teams with larger budgets. This could restrict their ability to secure quality players, especially overseas options, thereby impacting their overall balance.

The biggest threat for MI are their fans. They booed their captain Hardik Pandya last year, and the results came in their opponents’ favour. If they do that again this year, MI players may face a lot of problems due to that. Other threats are unavailability of quality spinners and a finisher in the squad.

MI fans were vocal about their support for Rohit as captain. If Hardik fails to deliver again, the pressure will be immense. Suryakumar, Hardik, and Tilak will be expected to carry the team. Failure from this trio could spell trouble for MI. Mumbai Indians have the squad depth and experience to stage a comeback in IPL 2025. However, addressing the spin-bowling issues and managing internal dynamics will be key to success.

Mumbai Indians Prediction for IPL 2025

Even though two overseas players—Allah Ghazanfar and Lizaad Williams—signed by MI at the mega auction have been ruled out even before the start of the season, they have signed able replacements in the form of Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Corbin Bosch.

There are question marks over the availability of Bumrah due to his ongoing fitness-related issues, but if reports are to be believed then the 31-year-old will be fit to play after missing the initial few games.

Mumbai Indians will open their campaign against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings on March 23 and then take on Pandya’s former team Gujarat Giants. MI’s first home game of the new season is scheduled against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on March 31. Five-time champions Mumbai Indians will look to end their five-year-long wait for a record-extending sixth IPL title when the latest season gets underway.

The Mumbai-based franchise is the joint-most successful team in IPL history alongside CSK and with another odd year brewing in 2025 and the women’s team recently winning the WPL title, motivation is in ample for the blue boys of MI to have another title in another odd year 2025.
