The star pacer Jasprit Bumrah claimed four wickets to help India restrict Bangladesh to 149 in their first innings and then Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten 33 runs to stretch India’s lead past 300 at the end of Day 2 in Chennai. Indian cricket team stayed ahead at the end of Day 2 of the first Test match against Bangladesh despite mixed performances by top-order batters in Chennai on Friday.

Jasprit Bumrah led the headlines with four wickets to restrict Bangladesh to 149 in the first innings and India then added 81 runs for 3 to stretch the lead to 308 runs. Even though India bowled in considerably less helpful conditions than day one, there was no respite for the Bangladesh batters. Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj took eight between them when there was assistance for the pacers, while Ravindra Jadeja broke Bangladesh’s biggest partnership when conditions eased off.

Day 2 : Morning Session : India fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Akashdeep strike early after finishing with 376

Taskin Ahmed bagged three quick wickets while Hasan Mahmud became the first Bangladesh pacer to bag a five-wicket haul in India as the hosts folded quickly on Day 2, adding only 37 runs to their overnight total as they were bowled out for 376.

Nevertheless, it was a remarkable performance from India’s lower order, led by R Ashwin’s 113 and Ravindra Jadeja’s 86, as they added 232 for the last four wickets having been reduced to 144/6. Bangladesh suffered early setbacks in reply, with Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah striking for India, as they went into Lunch at 26/3.

Taskin, who began with the second new ball at the start of the day, had Ravindra Jadeja poking at a delivery outside off to dismiss him for his overnight score of 86. R Ashwin, meanwhile, edged one off Hasan Mahmud for a four, and Akash Deep got going with two fours in an over off the same bowler, helping India past the 350 mark.

Akash also had a lucky break when he miscued one off Taskin but Shakib Al Hasan put down the catch. He then struck a text-book off drive and edged one for another boundary off Mahmud who had an expensive start on the second day.

Akash contributed 17 in a 24-run stand with Ashwin before fell to Taskin looking for a big shot. Jasprit Bumrah got off the mark by guiding the first ball he faced past the slip cordon for a four. Taskin then ended a fine innings from Ashwin, who looked to go over the top but ended up handing a catch to Najmul Hossain Shanto at deep mid off. Jasprit Bumrah survived a Bangladesh review for lbw with replays revealing an inside edge, Mahmud finally bagged his fifth wicket as Bumrah guided a catch to Zakir Hasan at third slip.

Earlier, India’s innings was cut short by Taskin Ahmed, who bagged three quick wickets while Mahmud became the first Bangladesh pacer to bag a five-wicket haul. India folded quickly on Day 2, adding only 37 runs to their overnight total. Nevertheless, it was a remarkable performance from India’s lower order, led by Ashwin’s 113 and Jadeja’s 86, as they added 232 for the last four wickets having been reduced to 144/6 on Day 1.

Taskin, who began with the second new ball at the start of the day, had Jadeja poking at a delivery outside off to dismiss him for his overnight score of 86. R Ashwin, meanwhile, edged one off Mahmud for a four, and Akash Deep struck a flurry of boundaries off Mahmud. Akash contributed 17 in a 24-run stand with Ashwin before he fell to Taskin looking for a big shot.

Taskin then ended a fine innings from Ashwin, who looked to go over the top but ended up handing a catch to Najmul at deep mid off. Bumrah was the last to fall, as Mahmud finally bagged his fifth wicket.

Shadman Islam got an edge off Jasprit Bumrah in the first over but the ball landed wide of backward point, and he was also beaten outside off. The bowler decided to change the angle, coming from around the wicket to see Shadman shoulder arms to a delivery that came in as he was bowled for 2. Zakir had a lucky break as he was rapped on the pad by Mohammed Siraj but India chose not to review, with replays later revealing three reds.

After three overs each for Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj, Akash and Ashwin were introduced into the attack. Najmul decided to take the positive approach to Ashwin, playing a sweep for a four. But Bangladesh suffered damage soon after as Akash had Zakir and Mominul Haque bowled off successive deliveries. Mushfiqur Rahim saw through the testing over from Akash as he and Najmul went into the Lunch break unbeaten, with Bangladesh having a lot of work to do.

The day started on a positive note for Bangladesh. Taskin Ahmed used the second new ball much better than the first for three wickets, Hasan Mahmud completed Bangladesh’s first five-for in India, and they let India add only 37 to their overnight score. However, a quick reminder followed that their bowlers had committed too many errors on day one already.

Jasprit Bumrah began over the wicket to the left-hand openers, moving the ball away consistently, but went around for the last ball of the first over. Shadman Islam left him, probably because all the previous five balls had moved away, but this one seamed back in to hit the top of off. Zakir Hasan survived an lbw call that both the umpire and the India captain misjudged, but Deep proved to be too good for him and Mominul Haque.

The first over from Deep, immediately around the wicket, wasn’t the greatest, but in his second he got the ball to seam in from a good length just outside off. Zakir was beaten completely while Mominul managed to get his pad in line only for the ball to ricochet into the wicket. He would have been lbw anyway. Mushfiqur Rahim edged the hat-trick ball towards gully but it fell short.

Day 2 : Post Lunch Session : Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja strengthen India’s grip with frequent strikes

Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja provided regular strikes for India to leave Bangladesh in an uncomfortable position at Tea on Day 2 of the first Test in Chennai. After India were bowled out for 376, Jasprit Bumrah’s three wickets and two each for Akash and Jadeja left Bangladesh reeling at 112/8, still trailing by 264 runs.

Bangladesh suffered early setbacks in their innings after bowling out India early. Jasprit Bumrah decided to change the angle, coming from around the wicket to see Shadman Islam shoulder arms to a delivery that came in as he was bowled for 2. Zakir Hasan had a lucky break as he was rapped on the pad by Mohammed Siraj but India chose not to review, with replays later revealing three reds.

After three overs each for Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, Akash and R Ashwin were introduced into the attack and the former had Zakir and Mominul Haque bowled off successive deliveries to leave Bangladesh at 22/3.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, who had made a promising start, had to depart early in the second session as Siraj got him to edge the ball to second slip where Virat Kohli held on to the ball. Bangladesh slipped to 40/5 as Bumrah got the better of Mushfiqur Rahim with a delivery that moved away late, with KL Rahul taking a good catch. A half-century partnership between Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das ensued, with the pair batting watchfully initially before starting to play their shots.

They struck eight fours between them to lead a mini recovery before India hit back through the spin of Jadeja to leave Bangladesh in further trouble. Litton went for a sweep and ended up handing a catch to substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel. Shakib tried a reverse sweep but he could manage only an edge onto the boot as the ball lobbed to the ‘keeper. Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored a few boundaries but the former fell to Bumrah in the brink of Tea to leave Bangladesh eight down.

Post lunch, India went back to their top two bowlers, who had only bowled short spells before the interval. Siraj, who had lost out on Zakir’s wicket earlier, was the most accurate of the three. Najmul Hossain tried to walk at him to counter the movement, but still managed to only edge to second slip as a wobble-seam ball seamed away from him.

Jasprit Bumrah kept testing Mushfiqur before he bowled a rare delivery that swung after pitching. You can’t mean to do that but it sometimes happens – mostly when the seam is upright – that the ball starts to swing after going past the batter. This one started to go even before it went past Mushfiqur, who had the angle covered otherwise. It took the edge, went quickly to second slip, and began to swerve away from KL Rahul at the last moment. Rahul’s upper body turned with the ball, and his soft hands meant the catch was taken.
By now the movement began to settle down, and Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan put together a quick stand of 51 with some good-looking drives. Then India’s spin twins came on and gave away nothing despite little assistance for them from the pitch. In trying to dominate them, Litton ended up playing a slog-sweep much squarer than he would have liked, offering a catch to deep square leg. Shakib unfortunately reverse-swept Ravindra Jadeja straight into his boot for a lob to Rishabh Pant.
Just before tea, India brought back the threat of Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. Siraj found the edge immediately but it didn’t carry, but with what proved to be the last ball before tea, Jasprit Bumrah got the better of Mahmud. Bangladesh were still 65 short of avoiding the follow-on.
The last two Bangladesh wickets hung around for three quarters of an hour, including a boundary off Jasprit Bumrah that clearly set something off. Jasprit Bumrah softened Taskin Ahmed up with short balls, hitting him on the helmet and the glove, before cleaning him up with a pinpoint yorker.

Day 2 : Post Afternoon Session : Jasprit Bumrah put India in pole position after 17-wicket day in Chennai

On a 17-wicket Day 2 in Chennai he most that have fallen in a day at the venue, Jasprit Bumrah’s four-wicket haul led a collective bowling performance from India as they bowled Bangladesh out for only 149 after folding for 376 earlier in the day. India lost early wickets in their second innings but they remain in firm control of the first Test, having reached 81/3, leading by 308 runs.

A half-century partnership between Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das ensued, with the pair batting watchfully initially before starting to play their shots. They struck eight fours between them to lead a mini recovery but India hit back with Ravindra Jadeja dismissing both. Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored a few boundaries but the former fell to Bumrah on the brink of Tea to leave Bangladesh eight down.

Mehidy and Taskin Ahmed kept India waiting for a while with a partnership worth 18. But Bumrah, who bowled a few short deliveries to Taskin, got him bowled eventually with a yorker. Mehidy tried to farm the strike as much as possible while batting with Nahid Rana, and even hit Ashwin for a six. Rana managed a couple of boundaries off Bumrah and Akash missed the chance to run the No.11 out. But Siraj came back and had Rana bowled to give India a 227-run lead.

Yashaswi Jaiswal helped India start positively as he struck two fours in the first over off Taskin, while Rohit Sharma also got off the mark with a clip off Hasan Mahmud for a four. Taskin, though, ended the Indian captain’s stay, getting one to move away late to find the outside edge. Jaiswal was the next to fall, edging Rana to the ‘keeper. Shubman Gill played a few lovely shots, with Virat Kohli supporting him from the other end.

Kohli struck a fine pull off Mehidy but fell soon after, trapped in front while attempting to flick a full delivery. He chose not to review but replays later revealed that there was an inside edge. Rishabh Pant hit a four off Shakib for his first boundary and followed it up with a six as India extended their lead past 300. Pant and Shubman were unbeaten, having added 14 runs.

Earlier, India’s innings was cut short by Taskin, who bagged three quick wickets while Mahmud became the first Bangladesh pacer to bag a five-wicket haul. India folded quickly on Day 2, adding only 37 runs to their overnight total. It was still a remarkable performance from India’s lower order, led by Ashwin’s 113 and Jadeja’s 86, as they added 232 for the last four wickets having been reduced to 144/6 on Day 1.

Taskin, who began with the second new ball at the start of the day, had Jadeja poking at a delivery outside off to dismiss him for his overnight score of 86. Taskin then ended a fine innings from Ashwin, who looked to go over the top but ended up handing a catch to Najmul at deep mid off. Jasprit Bumrah was the last to fall, as Mahmud finally bagged his fifth wicket.

The tall Nahid Rana didn’t quite fancy getting behind the line of Bumrah either but managed to somehow deny him the five-for, also hitting him for two boundaries. Eventually, he played Siraj on as he slogged at one, giving him his second wicket. India had more than an hour and a half to bat before stumps on day two.

So far ahead in the game were they, India came out swinging. Yashaswi Jaiswal took 10 runs off the first over, Rohit Sharma flicked the first ball he faced for four, but they soon discovered the pitch was still not flat enough to be toying around with the bowling. Their wickets made it the most – 16 – in a single day’s play at Chepauk.

Shubman gill and Virat Kohli then batted to the merit of the bowling, but a rare dismissal – a right-hand batter getting out lbw to an offspinner playing forward – made it 17 wickets in the day. It was Kohli, who did not review it, and Ultra Edge then suggested an inside edge. By stumps, India were more than 300 ahead.

Road Ahead on Day 3 for India and Bangladesh

Brilliant day for India and they are in a commanding position in this Test. This match is progressing at a very brisk rate with 17 wickets falling today. Resuming the day on 339/6, India were able to add just 37 runs today morning against the second new ball. Taskin picked three wickets and Hasan Mahmud wrapped up the innings to finish with a fifer. From 144/6, it was a superb recovery from the hosts to finish on 376, thanks to the 199-run stand between Ashwin and Jadeja.

In reply, Bangladesh got off to a poor start. Shadman Islam fell to Bumrah in the very first over and Akash Deep picked two wickets off successive deliveries to reduce Bangladesh to 26/3. Things got worse for the visitors with Siraj and Bumrah picking a wicket apiece in quick succession after lunch.

When Bangladesh were reeling at 40/5, Litton and Shakib stitched a half-century partnership and batting seemed to have gotten easier. But a couple of field changes resulted in both the set batters falling to Jadeja. While Litton holed out in the deep while trying to sweep, Shakib got out playing the reverse-sweep. There was little resistance from the lower order and Bangladesh were skittled out for 149 in one and a half sessions.

India didn’t enforce the follow-on and decided to bat again having gained a lead of 227. Jaiswal struck a couple of boundaries in the very first over, Rohit got off the mark with a boundary. But both of them nicked behind. Shubman Gill and Kohli joined hands and they were batting quite comfortably.

Mehidy managed to trap Kohli lbw in the latter part of the final session which wasn’t reviewed and replays showed that there was a faint inside edge. Pant hit a four and six off Shakib while Gill has looked solid in this innings. India lead by 308 runs and they’ll look to bat Bangladesh out of this contest. Most of us expected day two to be a good batting day but instead we saw 17 wickets fall.

India are effectively 308/3 and with plenty of time remaining in the match, they’ll look to bat big here. The pitch did ease out in the middle session but Bangladesh failed to take advantage of it. The visitors are now staring down the barrel. Expect India to bat positively.
