The stage is set as all roads will lead to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Super Sunday where India have not been lucky at all which gives New Zealand the chance and favourites as well looking at current form of both teams. A riveting battle is in-store for us.

Overview.

Two best sides in the competition, India and New Zealand are set to lock horns against each other in the grand finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday March 8th, at 7 PM IST onwards. India might be the team everyone is talking about, but New Zealand are a hard team to beat in T20Is especially for India. To put things in perspective, India and New Zealand have met in three games in ICC T20 World Cups and all three were won by New Zealand convincingly. The Kiwis have the psychological advantage over India for sure.

All eyes and roads will be on the Narendra Modi Stadium for this final clash. India’s batting finally lived up to the hype in the semi-final as they put on a show for a packed Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. The Men in Blue posted 253/7 after being sent in by England captain Harry Brook. On what turned out to be a batting paradise, England came within touching distance of the target but eventually fell short by just seven runs.

It was a record-breaking evening in the second semi-final. India’s total of 253/7 is the highest team score in a knockout match in T20Is. The Indian batters also struck 19 sixes in the innings- the joint most by any team in a T20 World Cup match. The first semi-final, on the other hand, turned out to be one-sided affair, though it too witnessed a luxury of records.

New Zealand blew South Africa away in the knockout clash. The Proteas had entered the game unbeaten in the tournament, but the Blackcaps brought their campaign to a grinding halt. It was the Finn Allen show at the iconic Eden Gardens. The swashbuckling opener slammed the fastest century in T20 World Cup history, reaching the milestone in just 33 balls which is also the quickest hundred against a full-member nation.

Both teams have had different match-winners stepping up a crucial stages of the tournament, which has propelled them to the summit clash. For India, the likes of Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube have delivered when it mattered the most. New Zealand, meanwhile, have relied on the contributions of Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Rachin Ravindra and Matt Henry.

The hosts India began their campaign with a win over the USA. They were in trouble at one stage, but a fighting half-century from captain Suryakumar Yadav helped them post a competitive total, which was then successfully defended by the bowlers. India then brushed aside Namibia with an emphatic 93-run victory. Their toughest challenge in the group stages came when they travelled to Colombo to face arch-rivals Pakistan. However, a breezy half-century from Ishan Kishan, coupled with a clinical bowling performance, saw them defeat Pakistan by 61 runs.

Shivam Dube’s all-round show then helped the defending champions overcome the Netherlands by 17 runs. India’s Super 8 campaign began on a disappointing note as they suffered a heavy defeat against the previous edition’s runners-up, South Africa. After conceding 187/7 while bowling first, India were bowled out for 111. The Men in Blue still had two games left but needed other results to go their way. Fortunately for them, those results did fall into place. India responded with a commanding 72-run win over Zimbabwe before sealing their semi-final spot with a comfortable victory over the West Indies in a virtual quarterfinal thanks largely to Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97.

In the semi-final, India brought their A-game with the bat. They went hell for leather from the outset and piled up 253/7 in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson led the charge with a blistering 89 off 42 balls, while useful contributions came from Ishan Kishan (39), Shivam Dube (43), Hardik Pandya (27) and Tilak Varma (21). With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah’s disciplined spell of 1/33 in 4 overs along with brilliant outfielding from Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya, helped India hold their nerve and seal a thrilling seven-run win.

The Kiwis began their campaign with a comfortable win over Afghanistan, chasing down 183 with 13 balls to spare. In their next game, the opening duo of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert went berserk against the UAE, stitching together an unbeaten 175-run stand to secure their second victory. They suffered a blip in the following match as South Africa chased down their total of 175 with ease. Glenn Phillips then stepped up with the bat in their next outing against Canada as New Zealand finished the group stage in second place.

The Super 8 campaign began with a washout against Pakistan. They defeated Sri Lanka in the next game but lost to England in their final Super 8 fixture and had to rely on other results going their way to reach the semi-finals. This is exactly what happened, as Sri Lanka pushed Pakistan to the limit, allowing New Zealand to qualify for the knockouts on net run rate. In the semi-final, New Zealand faced unbeaten South Africa in Kolkata.

After opting to bowl first, the Kiwis restricted the Proteas to 169/8 in 20 overs. Cole McConchie made an immediate impact as he picked up two wickets in his only over. Matt Henry and Rachin Ravindra bagged two wickets each, while Lockie Ferguson and Jimmy Neesham chipped in one wicket apiece. In reply, Finn Allen produced a record shattering 33-ball century, while Tim Seifert smashed 58 off 33 balls. The explosive opening partnership powered New Zealand to the target with 43 balls to spare.

History will be made no matter who comes out on top at the end of the night. Will New Zealand clinch their maiden T20 World Cup title or will India become the first team to successfully defend the crown and lift the trophy at home? We will have to wait and find that answer out soon.

Head-To-Head.

India and New Zealand have played against each other in 30 games out of which India won 18 games and New Zealand won 11 games. One game ended in a tie. It is 8-2 in India’s favour in last 10 games including winning the 5-match series 4-1 recently. But in T20 World Cups, it is New Zealand who leads India 3-0 as India are yet to beat Kiwis in ICC T20 World Cup history.

Pitch & Weather Report.

The pitch in Ahmedabad is known to provide a good batting track for the batters and it’s likely to be that way for the summit clash. The pitch will have more of red soil than black soil which allows the batters to play strokes. There will be true bounce and spin will be minimal on this deck. A high scoring contest could be on the cards.

According to the forecast, the temperature on Sunday will be 34 degrees Celsius in the morning and the conditions are expected to be hazy and very hot. The temperature is set to rise to 41 degrees Celsius later in the afternoon and then plummets to 29 degrees Celsius in the evening with conditions expected to be clear and warm by the time the match begins. There’s no chance of rain.

Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both teams.

Here, we will try and predict the probable playing XIs of both teams.

India XI: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Varun Chakaravarthy/Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh.

New Zealand XI: Tim Seifert (wk), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner (c), Jimmy Neesham, Cole McConchie, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson.

Key Players to watch out for in this clash.

Sanju Samson: Sanju Samson has rediscovered form and how. He has played two match-winning innings which has gone a long way in India reaching the finals. All eyes will be on Samson against the Kiwi bowlers and hope that he gives India a good start. If Samson can get going again and converts his start into another substantial score, it will put India in a good position in the final.

Jasprit Bumrah: India’s premier fast bowler returns home to Ahmedabad hoping to put in one more solid performance in the finals. Bumrah has made a big difference to the side and we saw that in Mumbai where he came good at the clutch towards the end. Without Bumrah, India would not have made it to the finals. Now with him there, one hopes India can get the monkey off the back.

Finn Allen: Finn Allen was like a rampaging river on Wednesday night in Kolkata. Allen wanted to prove a point and he did so in flying colours smashing the bowling to all parts. Tim Seifert played his part early on, but it was Allen who was the most aggressive and took down the bowling with ease. The powerplay score crossed 80 in 6 overs and it was no way back for the opponents. If Allen has another good day, India will be in deep deep trouble.

Matt Henry: Matt Henry loves bowling against India in knockouts ICC events. He has had a decent tournament so far but he will want to take wickets and rattle the India top order. If Henry gets it right and India are not up to it, a collapse could happen in Ahmedabad courtesy of Matt Henry who is the spearhead of this attack.

Key Stats and Records to look out for in this clash.

  • Abhishek Sharma is 7 sixes away from 100 sixes in T20Is.
  • Varun Chakaravarthy needs 4 wickets for 200 wickets across all T20s.
  • Shivam Dube needs 35 runs to complete 1000 T20I runs.

Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match.

This is the grand finale of the tournament and it is tough to call. Both teams are evenly matched and whoever plays better of the night will prevail and lift the trophy. History awaits both sides. The overall head-to-head is with India but New Zealand have won 3 out of 3 against India in World Cup T20 history. So, both teams will have a point to prove and not give an inch. Hoping for another good game of cricket.

Looking at current form and everything, we sense a heartbreak for the billion fans. New Zealand on current form starts this match as favourites. India with their home support and performance can surprise the Kiwis who will feel they are underdogs but the Kiwis seems to have less problems than India at this stage. Hoping for a cracking final on Super Sunday.
