ICC T20 WC 2026: India Gets Off To A Flying Start After Being Asked To Bat First.

In the grand finale of the ICC T20 World Cup, India were put into bat first by Mitchell Santner. India played themselves in the first two overs but then have exploded to take the attack to New Zealand. The Kiwis have wilted and India are off to a fast start in Ahmedabad with both Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma getting their eye in by now.

Sanju Samson & Abhishek Sharma decimates New Zealand in powerplay.

Put into bat first, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma came out to open for India while Matt Henry had ball in hand for New Zealand. Henry started with 4 dot balls before Samson broke the shackles and pulled it powerfully over mid-on as the ball went flat and hard for the maximum. Glenn Phillips was given the ball from the other end. He bowled a tidy over. Jacob Duffy came into the attack next.

Abhishek then lofted Duffy over mid-on as the ball went away to the fence for a boundary. Abhishek then went straight down the ground over the bowler’s head for a boundary. Samson joined in the fun as played a lofted drive back over Duffy’s head for a boundary. Lockie Ferguson came into the attack next and was greeted by Abhishek for a boundary as he shimmied down the track and got an outside edge that flew to the third man region for a boundary. Abhishek then blasted the ball as he went inside out over extra covers for a maximum.

Samson then looked to whip the ball leg side and got a leading edge that flew over short third man for the maximum. Lots of wides left as Samson got a ball on the pads as he tickled it away to the fine leg fence for a boundary. Matt Henry came back into the attack and was feeling the pinch delivering wides outside the off-stump. Abhishek then walked across the stumps and pumped it over mid-off for the maximum. Samson went big and pummelled the ball to deep square leg for the maximum.

Jacob Duffy came to bowl the final over of powerplay. Abhishek backed away for room and looked to play the square drive and got an outside edge that went past the keeper and away to the fence for a boundary. Abhishek then went big as he took it on the full and hit it over long-on down the ground for the maximum. Abhishek mistimed the shot and got it just over Chapman at deep midwicket for a boundary. Abhishek then brought up his fifty in style as he stood tall and flat batted it over wide mid-on for the boundary and a fifty in just 18 balls.

At the end of the powerplay, India raced away to 92/0 in 6 overs with Abhishek unbeaten on 51 off 19 balls and Sanju Samson with him on 33* off 17 balls. Players took the Drinks Break with the opening exchanges going to India.

Abhishek Sharma falls, but Sanju Samson drives India forward in the next phase.

Captain Mitchell Santner came into the attack post the powerplay. Samson cut the short and wide ball outside the off-stump past diving backward point for a boundary. Rachin Ravindra came into the attack next and got the first wicket dismissing Abhishek for 52 off 21 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes to his name.

Ravindra bowled from over the wicket a full and wide outside the off-stump outside the tram line, Abhishek chased it and he looked to carve it away behind square and got the edge to the keeper. Seifert took the catch. Ishan Kishan came out to bat next and got off the mark with a brace as the 100 came up for India in 7.2 overs. Ishan then rocked back and tucked it away between deep midwicket and long-on for a boundary. Kishan went back and across and opened the bat face to guide it away past backward point and short third man for a boundary.

Santner continued and bowled a good over. Jimmy Neesham came into the attack next. Samson showed deft touch as he stayed deep in the crease and opened the bat face and steered it down to short third man fence. Ishan then rocked back and cut it away past backward point for a boundary. India at the halfway stage of the proceedings are sitting pretty at 127/1 in 10 overs with Samson unbeaten on 48 off 30 balls and Ishan unbeaten on 19 off 9 balls.

What Lies Ahead.

India have run away with the game and are looking good to get a huge total. With wickets in hand, and a good track on offer, India will try and get a massive score on the board. New Zealand needs wickets to stem the flow of runs. Can they come back? India in control at this stage.
