For Associate nations and struggling Full Members alike, those four weeks will carry immense weight. Under the revamped qualification pathway, the stakes couldn’t be higher: only the tournament winner secures direct entry into the 14-team World Cup group stage. Those finishing second, third, and fourth will be thrust into the high-stress “Super Series” play-in stage to scramble for the single remaining spot in the 12-team main draw.
News of the scheduling arrives just as the qualification standings take a decisive hit. A rain-out in the opening ODI between Ireland and Afghanistan officially eliminated Paul Stirling’s side from direct ranking qualification, locking Ireland into the qualifier alongside a nervous West Indies side.
Rain Seals Ireland’s Fate as West Indies Face Narrow Path
No two teams look at this upcoming window with more urgency than Ireland and the West Indies. For Ireland, any lingering hopes of sneaking into the automatic top-eight ranking spot evaporated when grey skies over Bready forced a complete washout against Afghanistan without a ball bowled.
