ICC Champions Trophy 2025: What’s Next For England Cricket After Jos Buttler’s Departure?

The people who love and follow English cricket were shocked when Jos Buttler said he was quitting as the captain of the whiteball team. In 2022, Jos Buttler was appointed as the captain of the England cricket team, replacing Eion Morgan who hang his boots. But now Buttler has announced that he will be stepping down as captain after the last league match against South Africa on 1st March at Karachi. His reason for doing so was to address some personal matters and to concentrate on his batting.

  • Harry Brook : The 24-year-old middle-order batsman He’s been mentioned as a possible future captain and his recent games have made him an ever-stronger candidate. Harry Brook also is compared to Virat Kohli by England cricket experts who can excel in all 3 formats and recently also led England against Australia in ODI series which they lost by 2-3.

 

  • Phil Salt: Salt has already led the team in T20Is against Australia and has the aggressive batting style and the ability to think critically and make smart moves in particular situations to succeed as captain.

 

  • Liam Livingstone : Livingstone has captained the team in ODIs against the West Indies and has a wealth of experience leading in domestic cricket. Liam Livingstone can also emerge as a captaincy candidate given he was the skipper for West Indies in ODIs in Caribbean but lost series by 1-2.

 

  • Ben Duckett : Duckett is a dark horse in the race, but in recent from in domestic cricket and his experience of playing in various T20 leagues makes him a position

ECB needs to prioritize ODI format and most importantly their one day domestic competition shouldn’t be overlooked because of Hundred tournament as both these tournaments clash at the same time & perhaps that’s the reason behind England’s downfall in ODI cricket.
