ICC Champions Trophy 2025 : South Africa Eye Semi-Finals Berth Against A Weak England Side

The Champions Trophy is certainly nearing the business end. And with just one semi-finals spot up for grabs. South Africa and Afghanistan are still in contention. Afghanistan sharing points with Australia after their game was washed out on Friday means they are still in the race for the final four. However, South Africa still hold the advantage with a game in hand and a higher Net Run Rate (NRR).

A determined South Africa will take on a deflated England in the last Group B game of the Champions Trophy on Saturday. Following a stupendous mauling of Afghanistan in their tournament opener in Karachi, South Africa earned one point from their washout against Australia, holding them afloat in the quest for the knockouts.

A win against England will be enough to seal the deal for the Proteas. However, their opponents will also be eyeing to close the tournament with a win. Having lost to Australia and Afghanistan, England arrive into their final group stage fixture on the back of skipper Jos Buttler having stepped down as white-ball captain.

Notably, England are already out of the tournament while South Africa still have a chance of making the semifinals and a good one at that. England have lost both their matches in the tournament – to Australia and Afghanistan respectively – and are looking to salvage some pride. South Africa are technically unbeaten in the tournament after their match against Australia was abandoned without the toss following their win over Afghanistan.

SA vs ENG : Previous Performances

While the Proteas are in the box seat to progress to the final four of the Champions Trophy, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing in recent times. Their clash with Australia was washed out and they handled Afghanistan by 107 runs before that. But that victory ended a run of six straight 50-over defeats, dating back to October last year where they even dropped a game to Ireland.

South Africa’s match against Australia was abandoned due to rain without even the toss and England went down to Afghanistan in a thriller. Ibrahim Zadran broke Ben Duckett’s record for the highest individual score in the Champions Trophy after Afghanistan lost early wickets. Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi gave the final flourish in the backend of the innings to lead Afghanistan to 325.

Things have gone from bad to worse for England, carrying their shaky pre-tournament form into the Champions Trophy. Having suffered back-to-back defeats in Lahore, they are out of the running to qualify for the semi-finals. There’s no question they’ve been competitive, but haven’t been able to apply the finishing touch in either match.

England too lost two early wickets, but Joe Root held the fort with his first ODI century since June 2019 and kept the Three Lions in the game despite running out of partners. Although Root’s dismissal sparked a collapse, England’s lower order kept them in the chase until the very last over where Azmatullah Omarzai’s fifer decided the match in Afghanistan’s favour.

SA vs ENG : Pitch and Weather Report

The National Stadium in Karachi has hosted two games so far in the Champions Trophy 2025. The average first-innings score has been around 318. Both matches were won by teams batting first after winning the toss . The most important news, given the way things have gone over the last few days, is that a clear day is forecast for Karachi, which has thus far also been a high-scoring venue.

In the two previous matches played there in this tournament, the team batting first has scored over 300 and won the game convincingly. Hot and dry. And flat, although not as flat as Lahore The Karachi Stadium has favoured high-scoring totals for the teams batting first in both games. In their previous match here, South Africa racked up 315/6 against Afghanistan before securing a 106-run win.

South Africa were one of those teams, and they believed they could have topped up their 315 for 6 against Afghanistan and know what’s possible after their experience in these conditions in a tri-series over the last month. England have been involved in two high-scoring games and fallen short both times, and may be wondering how much is enough. In their last hurrah, they may want to reinforce that their batting blueprint is not just entertaining but successful as well.

SA vs ENG : Big Picture : All eyes on Buttler as he plays his final match as skipper for England

What could have been a quarter-final is all but a dead rubber as Group B closes out with the meeting of two heavyweights. England are already out of semi-final contention, and will soon have to go down a spiral of introspection over their poor ODI showings, starting with the decision of Jos Buttler to step down as captain.

South Africa are all but through to the last four (all but the the most outlandish of heavy defeats will see them through ahead of Afghanistan following Friday’s washout), and it will be their third successive appearance in the knockouts of an ICC event. It will also vindicate white-ball coach Rob Walter’s assertion that when they have a full-strength squad available, they can challenge the best.

Some may not even consider England worthy of the label at the moment, but they are the highest-ranked opposition South Africa will actually play against at this tournament so far, after their fixture against Australia was also washed out.

South Africa’s first match was a week ago against Afghanistan, who they beat comfortably in Karachi, the same venue as this game. England, though, lost to Afghanistan for the second successive time in a big ODI event, and will wonder if the gulf between themselves and South Africa is as wide as the margin of results against Afghanistan suggests.

The evidence of the last World Cup hints at that, after South Africa galloped to a 229-run thrashing of England in Mumbai. Before that, South Africa beat England 2-1 in an ODI series thrust into the middle of the inaugural SA20 which ensured their qualification for that World Cup.

In some ways, that series signalled a turning point for both sides: South Africa began rebuilding, and results have largely been positive, while England – though they won ODI series against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Ireland in 2023 – have lost their last four bilateral contests and appear out of sorts at major tournaments.

They won’t want to leave this one without having some say. An attack of Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone will be a challenge for South Africa, who will hope to hit back by solidifying their own batting strategy ahead of a likely semi-final. Meanwhile, with harrowing defeats to Australia and Afghanistan knocking them out of the competition, England will have plenty of questions to answer in the batting and bowling departments, irrespective of the dead-rubber nature for them in this tie.

With Jos Buttler’s future as captain on the line, England’s star white-ball batter will hope to make a significant contribution with the blade before heading back to home to contemplate further on the leadership role.

SA vs ENG : Players In the spotlight: Joe Root and Wiaan Mulder

After leading the run-scoring list at one stage in the SA20 and ultimately finishing eighth, Joe Root became a fan favourite in South Africa – and especially among Paarl Royals supporters – and they would like to take some credit for his current form.

He is currently third in this year’s Champions Trophy’s batting charts, and has already contributed a fifty and a hundred – the latter his first in 40 ODIs since 2019. But Root would love to be able to make a significant score in a winning cause. He is as familiar with South Africa’s attack as they are with him, and may see this as an opportunity to show his dominance against them and in an England line-up set for a shake up.

Wiaan Mulder has gone from a fringe player to one of the must-haves in a South Africa side which already has one seam-bowling allrounder in Marco Jansen. Mulder plays a completely different role to Jansen, whose left-arm angle, express pace and ability to generate bounce is one of South Africa’s premier modes of attack.

Mulder, meanwhile, offers seam movement and a hint of swing, and has worked hard on both his consistency and his batting, which gives South Africa the luxury of a fourth seamer and a lengthened line-up. There were some glimpses of his batting ability with his brief innings of 12 from six balls against Afghanistan, where he also took 2 for 36 in nine overs in an under-rated but important contribution.

SA vs ENG : Vital Stats that matters

  • The last time these two teams met in the Champions Trophy was in the semi-final in 2013. England were comfortable winners over South Africa, whose batting collapsed in what turned out to be coach Gary Kirsten’s final match in charge. England, though, went on to lose the final to India.
  • Liam Livingstone is set to play his 100th international match across formats. So far, he has played one Test, 38 ODIs and 60 T20Is.
  • Phil Salt is 20 runs away from 1000 in ODIs.
  • Only two of the six totals of more than 300 in the tournament have been scored in Karachi.
  • The other four, including the top three, have been made in Lahore.
  • Three of the tournament’s 11 centuries have been scored in Karachi.

Injuries continue to mount for England. Mark Wood is set to see a specialist in the UK next week after suffering a left knee injury against Afghanistan. Saqib Mahmood could play his 13th ODI in Wood’s place. And, of course, this will be Buttler’s last game in charge. Mark Wood is doubtful with a knee injury. Heinrich Klaasen has been declared “fine and available for selection” by Walter after he missed the match against Afghanistan due to an elbow injury. With Klaasen slotting into the middle order, that will force South Africa to leave one of their top-order players out.

On form, that is likely to be Tony de Zorzi, with Ryan Rickelton partnering Temba Bavuma at the top, and Rassie van der Dussen to slot in at No. 3. South Africa’s attack could remain unchanged, though, which means space for only one specialist spinner .Heinrich Klaasen has yet to play a match in the tournament because of an elbow injury. He is now available for selection. Tony de Zorzi could make way for him.

Probable Best Batter: Aiden Markram

Aiden Markam looked in ominous touch in the game against Afghanistan. He came out to bat at No. 5 and smashed an unbeaten 52 off 36 balls with the help of six fours and one six. Markram can play the anchor’s role and also accelerate when required. This makes him a key asset for the Proteas.

Probable Best Bowler: Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada is the spearhead of the South African bowling lineup. He bagged three crucial wickets in the game against Afghanistan and looked in great rhythm. The right-arm speedster’s spell will be crucial for the Rainbow Nation.

The equation is crystal clear for South Africa. They will be desperate to win the game to book their place in the semifinals.
