Enjoying bowling as much as possible- Mohammed Siraj

In a recent interview with Cricbuzz, Siraj opened up about his new mindset, the shift to a new franchise, and his drive after missing the Champions Trophy. Speaking on Ravi Shastri’s observation that Siraj is keeping things simple, Siraj agreed,

“Very true. I’ve started to believe that there’s not much to gain by overdoing things. My recent philosophy has been to stay in the present and enjoy my bowling as much as possible. That mindset helps me stay calm, and it’s also bringing success. I’m not chasing wickets but focusing on maintaining my line and keeping things simple. Most importantly, I’m enjoying what I am doing,”

Mohammed Siraj’s IPL form fueled by a return to basics

When asked about his T20 bowling approach this season, Siraj admitted that he hasn’t changed much. A much-needed break from continuous cricket allowed him to reset. Reviewing past videos helped him recognise and correct mistakes, rediscovering the strengths that once made him successful.

“It’s a small ground, so I focused on attacking the stumps as much as possible,” he shared, emphasizing the importance of simplicity and discipline.

On dismissing aggressive batters like Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Phil Salt, Siraj said his plan was straightforward — avoid giving width and stick to precise lengths, particularly on slower wickets like Hyderabad’s. His approach to getting Rohit Sharma out was similarly tactical. Observing the ball’s lack of swing, Siraj adjusted to rely on seam movement and perfect length.

“Ashu Bhai gives me a lot of freedom. The ambience is much more relaxed,” he said, appreciating the trust and confidence from both Nehra and GT’s leadership.

About Shubman Gill’s captaincy, Siraj remarked,

“Shubman is quite calm… He gives me the freedom to do what I want, and he doesn’t take pressure.” Their longstanding friendship has translated into a strong bond on the field.

Pitch adaptability and missing the Champions Trophy

Growing up on diverse Indian pitches, Siraj finds adjusting between red and black soil wickets manageable. He noted that understanding pitch behaviour has made the transition seamless. Speaking on missing the Champions Trophy, Siraj admitted it was tough initially. However, the setback ignited a fresh motivation within him to focus on improvement and deliver stronger performances for his franchise and country. He also added,

“I started concentrating on my fitness and running. I spoke to Soham Bhai [trainer Soham Desai], who guided me with a programme to work on my fitness. Soham Bhai has been a crucial support system for me, both in the past and present,”

“When I first met him in 2018, I wasn’t fully convinced by his methods. But he told me that to achieve big things, one has to sacrifice. I trusted his advice, and now, he knows my body better than I do,”
