Young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has turned out to be one of the brightest prospects in world cricket with his incredible start to international cricket last year. The left-handed batter took just 9 Tests (16 innings) to complete 1000 runs in Test cricket and was the second-fastest Indian to achieve the feat after Vinod Kambli (14 innings).
The 22-year-old announced his arrival in international cricket with a century on his Test debut against West Indies, but it was the series against England that established him as the next big thing in world cricket. He smashed 712 runs in the five-match series and outshined senior pros like Rohit Sharma, Joe Root, Ben Stokes and others.
The swashbuckling opener has also impressed many with his free-flowing batting in T20Is. He has played 23 T20Is for India and scored 723 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 164.32. Yashasvi Jaiswal and his opening partner KL Rahul (77) added 201 runs in the third innings of the aforementioned Perth Test. They became the third Indian opening pair to record a double-century stand in SENA nations in Tests. The duo also became just the sixth visiting opening pair to register a 200-plus partnership Down Under.All the five other pairs with this feat are from England.
Overall, the left-handed Yashasvi Jaiswal has racked up 1,798 runs at an incredible average of 52.88. This includes 10 fifties and four tons. His best score is 214*. The youngster clocked 36 Test sixes in 2024, the most for a batter in a calendar year. India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal’s childhood coach Jwala Singh has said that the southpaw’s dependency for his side in the upcoming England tour would be similar to the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli, when they toured the country. He added that Jaiswal would be one of the senior batters in the Indian side during the upcoming England tour.
Jwala Singh also felt that if Jaiswal made up his mind, then he would get runs in English conditions. Jaiswal featured for India A in both the warm-up matches against England Lions, making a combined total of 110 runs in four innings.
“Looking at his character since childhood, he’s a guy when he decides something he delivers. I have many incidents. I feel he will be one of the senior batters. He has positioned himself well in all Test matches. If he decides and gets used to the conditions in the warm-up games, I am very sure that he will score runs. His role is very, very vital in this Indian unit.”
“I hope like what I am seeing now that the Indian batting lineup will definitely have a lot of dependency on him similar to the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli. I think he needs to play that role. If India does well, he needs to play the same role as they did in the past,” Singh told in an interview to Times of India .
Speaking about Yashaswi Jaiswal’s evolution into an all-format batter, Jwala Singh said that the southpaw was a confident batter, who was able to adapt to different conditions and formats. He also thanked the role of the IPL in his growth as a player. Singh felt that Jaiswal had the potential to play 10-15 years for the country.
“I really feel that he is really confident. He has a lot of self belief and these days, he knows how to handle the different formats and different conditions and so I think that has really helped him a lot. I think credit goes to the IPL, Rajasthan Royals and BCCI.”
“He’s a boy who learns quickly and knows how to handle the pressure. I feel he has the ability to play long for Indian team. He’s the player who can play 10-15 years for India for all formats,” Singh told the aforementioned source.
