ENG vs IND: N Jagadeesan Replaces Rishabh Pant In India Squad For 5th Test

In latest breaking news coming in, N Jagadeesan has been called up to the India squad for the 5th Test against India at the Oval in London. It is a maiden call up for the young man from Tamil Nadu. N Jagadeesan will replace India’s vice-captain Rishabh Pant who fractured his right foot while batting in the first-innings in the just concluded Old Trafford Test and has been ruled out for 6-8 weeks.

Jagadeesan who is 29 years of age is understood to have received his visa early on Sunday morning and will most likely link up with the squad in London by Tuesday. He will act as a standby or back-up for Dhruv Jurel who himself had to keep wickets in both the third and fourth Test matches as a substitute for Pant as he was down with a finger injury at Lord’s and a fractured toe at Manchester.

N Jagadeesan Performances In Domestic Cricket

Jagadeesan has been on the fringes of the India A setup for quite a while. He has also topped the run charts for Tamil Nadu in two seasons back-to-back in the Ranji Trophy. In 2023/24, he made 816 runs in 13 innings at an average of 74.18. He followed that up by scoring 674 runs in 13 innings at an average of 56.16 in 2024/25.

Jagadeesan did not make the India A cut for the shadow tour to England, but he’s been part of a wider pool of targeted players shortlisted by BCCI’s centre of excellence over the past 12 months. As a batter, Jagadeesan has shown adaptability to play in different positions making him an asset for the Indian team going forward.

Jagadeesan made his first class debut in 2016 and has a formidable first-class record since then by averaging 47.50 and aggregating 3373 runs in 79 innings. He had 10 hundreds and 14 half centuries with a best of 321 against Chandigarh in January 2024. Jagadeesan was last seen in action in the Tamil Nadu Premier League where he hit a 41-ball 81 in his last T20 innings on July 4.

N Jagadeesan: A future star in the making?

This will be Jadadeesan’s second tour to the UK after leading a Tamil Nadu Colts team last year. With the track record that Jagadeesan carries, he can definitely be groomed as a man for the future in Indian cricket. With Rishabh Pant out injured, he will play the back-up role to Dhruv Jurel who will most likely barring a last minute hiccup will start in the playing XI.

Jagadeesan is most likely going to warm the bench for the Oval Test, but it gives him an opportunity to be with the Indian set up and the experience he will gain is invaluable sharing dressing rooms with KL Rahul and the likes. If Jurel stays fit, then Jagadeesan will carry drinks but should something happen to Jurel during match, it is good to have a back-up option to keep wickets. Jagadeesan must be mentally ready for a call-up in case it happens and must grab that opportunity with both hands at Oval.

Jagadeesan has the talent to make a mark for India, it is how he is groomed will go a long way in defining his career and journey from hereon. The signs are promising if we go purely by stats.

What Lies Ahead

England will clash with India in the fifth and final Test at the Oval in London from 31st July onwards. It is the final chapter of what has been an epic series full of gripping moments. England lead the series 2-1 and will still be favourites to clinch the series in London. India needs to play out of their skins to make it 2-2 by winning at the Oval despite a great effort to draw the Test in Manchester.

Will England seal another series against India at home or will India roar back with profound confidence and renewed momentum with them and level the series at 1-1. Well, only time will tell as the Oval Test starts in 3 days time and we can’t wait for the final chapter of this series to unfold.
