It is decision time, finally, for England on the great Jacob Bethell or Ollie Pope debate as to which of the two bats at No 3 against India – at least for the first Test, if not the entire series. The poor form of Zak Crawley over the winter and to start the domestic season briefly brought his opener’s spot into the conversation, but his 124 in the Test win over Zimbabwe quickly ended that debate, while Ollie Pope‘s own 171 in the innings victory has also likely closed the door on Bethell.
The 21-year-old Warwickshire batter impressed immensely in his debut series in New Zealand over the winter, scoring three half-centuries during the 2-1 win, despite never having batted in the top three previously and with no professional hundred to his name. England Team Director Rob Key, has insisted that England’s’s looming selection call between Jacob Bethell and Ollie Pope will not define either player’s career ahead of Friday’s first Test against India in Leeds.
Bethell and Ollie Pope are in direct competition, with one of the pair set to walk out as England’s No. 3 at Headingley and the other likely to miss out on selection altogether. Bethell was the standout omission from Stokes’ side across the first two Tests, with many touting the young batter as a star for the future who deserved a spot in the side.
England opted to stick with Ollie Pope and, while he was a player under pressure heading into the series, he stood up to the criticism in his opening innings of the first Test, hitting a strong 106 runs. However, Ollie Pope scored just eight runs in the second innings at Headingley and then at Edgbaston suffered a golden duck in the first innings before scoring 24 runs in the second as England fell to a 336-run defeat in the second Test.
With copious insights into Jacob Bethell’s game dynamics in IPL, Dinesh Karthik had some strong opinions on the young all-rounder ahead of Lord’s Test.
Dinesh Karthik advocates for Jacob Bethell ahead off out of touch Ollie Pope ahead of 3rd Test
Former India wicketkeeper-batter and current Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) mentor Dinesh Karthik has stirred up the England middle-order debate by expressing his preference for young Jacob Bethell over the more experienced Ollie Pope in the current Test setup. While he acknowledged that sidelining Ollie Pope might seem harsh, Karthik believes Bethell brings a greater degree of adaptability and future potential to the crease.
Ollie Pope, who came into the five-match Test series against India with questions hanging over his No. 3 spot, briefly silenced his critics with a sublime 106 in the first innings of the Leeds Test. However, a recent dip in form, reflected in scores of 8, 0, and 24 in his last three innings, has reignited the selection dilemma.
In course of a panel discussion on Sky Sports, alongside legends like Nasser Hussain, Ravi Shastri, and Michael Atherton, Karthik was asked who he’d back at No. 3, Ollie Pope or Bethell The former India stumper didn’t hold back:
“I am a bit biased. I would pick him (Jacob Bethell) at No. 3. At this point of time, I’d pick him ahead of Ollie Pope. The fact is that if you are an England selector and coach, it’s unfair to Pope. He got a hundred in the last game. But if you look at the long run, it would be interesting to see where Bethell and Pope finish. I feel, along with Harry Brook, he is probably the big one to watch out for.”
On the flip side, Bethell is still making his mark in the red-ball arena. Despite a modest first-class average of 28.61 from 24 matches, the 21-year-old showcased promise during his debut Test series against New Zealand in late 2024, registering three half-centuries in six innings.
With the series now levelled 1-1, India and England will shift bases to London to play the third Test of the series at the home of cricket – Lord’s. The match will begin on Thursday, July 10.
