England coach Brendon McCullum said England “probably” made a mistake in deciding to bowl first during their 336-run defeat by India in the second Test at Edgbaston.England head coach Brendon McCullum acknowledged that a key tactical misstep contributed significantly to their heavy defeat in the second Test at Edgbaston. Talking about the loss, Brendon McCullum admitted that it was the toss where his team made a crucial error in judgement, which ultimately cost them the match and allowed India to level the series.
Brendon McCullum’s words were a rare admission from this England camp that they have made an error. They usually remain steadfast in their wish to look forward rather than back and find the positives in any situation. Four of England’s highest 10 fourth-innings chases have come under Stokes and Brendon McCullum, including 371 to win the first Test last week and 378 against India at Edgbaston in 2022.
That has influenced Stokes’ decision to bowl first in 10 of the 11 matches he has won the toss in England. This is only their second defeat when doing so. The visitors were outclassed across all sessions and never truly managed to mount a challenge, trailing behind throughout the match and failing to match India’s intensity and execution.
India thrashed Ben Stoke’s England by whopping 336 runs at Edgbaston.
Shubman Gill and Akash Deep star for India as the visitors register their first win at the Edgbaston ground on Sunday. Defending 608 runs in the final innings, the question only was if England could get away with a draw and Gill’s men, with precision and strategy, decimated bazzballers on the final day, whose approach and philosophy were questioned by the circumstances of the game situation on the final day.
Shubman Gill with twin hundreds a double in the first innings led the side with the bat in both innings, while the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal chipped in with various contributions through the match. With the ball, it was Mohammed Siraj in the first innings who did the damage with six wickets. In the first innings, although England had two centuries from Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, they still fell a long way away from India’s first innings lead, which took its toll in the second innings.
England head coach Brendon McCullum has accepted that his team made the wrong decision to bowl first at Edgbaston in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Speaking after the Test ended in a huge, 336-run defeat that leveled the series 1-1, Brendon McCullum said the hosts were expecting the pitch to ‘get better to bat on’ over the course of the match, but the opposite happened as cracks opened up and even spinners got help.
Brendon McCullum believes that England didnt play the Bazball style cricket
After England suffered a crushing 336-run defeat to India in the second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Edgbaston, head coach Brendon McCullum admitted that the hosts were unable to play as they intended and also missed an opportunity at the toss.
Chasing a record 608, Stokes and his team tried to put up resistance but were bowled out for 271 with more than a session’s play left on day five. India’s series-levelling victory was led by captain Shubman Gill who scored 269 and 161, while Akash Deep took ten wickets in the match.
Interestingly, just like the first Test at Headingley, Indian captain Shubman Gill also said he’d have bowled first at the toss. It was a great toss to lose for him, then, as India smashed 587 in the first innings in sublime batting conditions, before their pacers Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep stepped up to dismiss England for 427. India controlled the game from thereon, setting a 608-run target, which was easily defended.
“We ran second for five days. I thought India played exceptionally well. Shubman Gill was at an elite level and played brilliantly on this pitch. We weren’t quite able to play how we wanted to on it and they thoroughly deserved to win.
“I think as the game unfolded we probably looked back on that toss and said did we miss an opportunity there and it’s probably fair. We didn’t expect that the wicket would play quite as it did and hence we probably got it slightly wrong.
“But we did have them 200-5 and we weren’t able to capitalise on that position and when you win the toss and bowl you’re hoping to, well you’re not anticipating the opposition’s going to score 580 and then from that point we’re behind the game,” said Brendon McCullum to BBC Test Match Special at the conclusion of the game.
He also praised Harry Brook and Jamie Smith for their massive 303-run stand in the first innings.
“It was only a brilliant partnership from Jamie Smith and Harry Brook which gave us any balance in the game throughout the five days. That’s something we’ve got to look at. We’re not rigid with our plans.
“It’s just we thought this pitch might get better to bat on as we went through the five days but as we saw it didn’t. Two very simple players. They’ve got good set-ups, good techniques, and they like to hit the ball and put pressure on the opposition.
“It’s easy to do when you’re well in front of the game but when you’re 80-5, to still stay true to your policy and stay true to your game to give yourself the best chance shows just how mentally strong they are as well. Both of them played exceptionally well. The rest of us weren’t able to enter the game and have any real impact on it,” Brendon McCullum elaborated.
Asked if England missed an opportunity to secure a win in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, Brendon McCullum stated,
“I thought Akash Deep bowled outstandingly on that surface. Obviously growing up playing on those types of wickets and he hit his length and was able to utilise the surface where he could.
“He was exceptional. Bumrah will more than likely come back in for the next one so we’ve just got to make sure we’re well planned and well prepared and ready for the next challenge. It will be quite different I imagine to this surface and that’s probably a good thing for us.”
Brendon McCullum concluded by saying Jofra Archer is ready for the third Test at Lord’s, starting on July 10.
“He’s fit and ready to go and obviously the other boys have had two Test matches on the spin now so you’d anticipate you would make a change at some stage with the line-up and Jofra is one we’ll look at.”
With the next Test starting in only three days’ time, it would be interesting to see what sort of pitch the hosts prepare, considering the result in Birmingham. Â India on the other hand, whose chances were doubted after England’s fine win in Headingley last week, leave Birmingham with their first Test victory at Edgbaston at the ninth attempt. It also brilliantly sets up the remainder of the series, which continues at Lord’s on Thursday having a series levelled at 1-1.
