ENG vs IND : Brad Haddin Slams Ravindra Jadeja’s Inclusion In Test Team

Ravindra Jadeja is currently at the No.1 position in the ICC Men’s Test All-rounder Rankings with 376 rating points to his name, and he is followed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Marco Jansen, Pat Cummins, and Ben Stokes in the top five. However, the recent form of the 36-year-old all-rounder has not been good either with the bat or with the ball. Ravindra Jadeja has not crossed the 30-run mark in his last six innings and has been wicketless five times in his previous 12 innings.

In the Test series opener against the England National Cricket Team at Headingley in Leeds, Ravindra Jadeja looked quite ineffective across all four innings. In the first innings, he bowled 23 overs and conceded 68 runs at an economy of 2.95 while going wicketless. And, in the second innings, when there was some help for the spinners on the surface, Ravindra Jadeja was not able to utilise the rough patches to his advantage and returned with the bowling figures of 24-1-104-1.

With the bat, Ravindra Jadeja, with his score of 11, was part of India’s batting collapse in the first innings, and in the second innings, he scored an unbeaten 25 runs. Overall, he averages 35 with the ball and 23 with the bat since the start of the 2024 New Zealand series at home.

Ravindra Jadeja’s decline in Test cricket

With the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja has become India’s frontline spinner in Tests. But is it really the way to go about it. India head coach Gautam Gambhir has been asked a serious question from the Australian shores and told to make bold calls if he wants his team to save the series after losing the opener to England by five wickets.

Ravindra Jadeja, once a lethal bowling pair alongside Ashwin, is 36, and against all expectations, proved ineffective in the Headingley Test. Conditions in England are such that playing two spinners is as rare as India winning a Test series there. So if the opportunity provides, why not prioritise a better spinner, a specialised spinner

It’s been a quiet few months for Ravindra Jadeja. He has yet to cross 30 in his last six innings and has returned wicketless five times in his previous 12. Since the start of the New Zealand series last October, Ravindra Jadeja averages 35 with the ball and 23 with the bat. Concerning. Which is why former Australia wicketkeeper batter Brad Haddin makes some valid points about Jadeja, wondering if the India all-rounder is slipping down.

There was a time when Ravindra Jadeja was undroppable – heck, after 2017, his batting peaked, and he even scored a century during the 2022 Birmingham Test, albeit India lost. But when on the final day, Ravindra Jadeja picked just one wicket, unable to make the most of the rough outside off-stump to the left-hander, Brad Haddin feels that leaving him out for Kuldeep Yadav is a move India should be willing to make.

Are we seeing the decline of Ravindra Jadeja?- Brad Haddin

Former Australia National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batsman and the current Punjab Kings coach, Brad Haddin, has made some interesting remarks on the veteran India National Cricket Team all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Brad Haddin believes that there has been a decline in Ravindra Jadeja’s career, and he is no longer as effective as he used to be.

Speaking on the LiSTNR Sport podcast, Brad Haddin advised India head coach Gautam Gambhir to be bold while selecting India’s playing XI for the second Test against England and drop Ravindra Jadeja for Kuldeep Yadav. He said:

“Are we seeing the decline of Ravindra Jadeja? I mean yes, he is effective in Indian conditions and how hard it is to play left-arm spin in India but I don’t think he is the best option to have in the team spin wise.

“I would look at Kuldeep. Someone who is an attacking spinner, who can get wickets. You’ve got a couple of hold-in bowlers. Siraj can play that role, but I think they need to be a bit more bold in their selection of bowlers.”

Brad Haddin further said if India include the all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in the playing XI, they can drop Ravindra Jadeja, who has been quite ineffective, and bring in an attacking spin-bowling option, which will make their team composition better. He said:

“If Reddy plays, then you don’t have to play Jadeja and bring the attacking spin option. I think that’s one thing they’ve got to look at, especially away from home.

“I don’t think Jadeja can be effective. Yes, he is good all-rounder and he could play as a second spinner – hold at the other end. But I think they need to be more attacking, be willing to lose a Test match with some inexperienced bowlers but change their mindset at the way they go about it.”

The second Test match between India and England will be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 2 to 6. Reportedly, India will be missing the services of Jasprit Bumrah in the match as he has decided to play just three out of five matches.
