Shubman Gill new king — a statement that has taken the cricket world by storm. After leading India with a captain’s innings of 127 runs in the ongoing ENG vs IND 2025 Test series, Gill has officially stamped his authority. His poised knock against England has drawn massive praise and even triggered bold commentary from cricket legends.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh praised Shubman Gill for scoring a century in his debut Test as captain. Batting at the iconic No. 4 position—previously held by legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli—Gill showcased his dominance by dispatching England’s bowlers to all corners of the ground on Day 1 of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. With this knock, he registered his maiden Test century in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) nations.

Shubman Gill New King: Dethroning Legends with Performance

It wasn’t just the runs that earned Gill the spotlight — it was the context. With the team struggling in the opening hour, Gill displayed maturity beyond his years, rebuilding the innings brick by brick. His 127-run effort combined resilience with aggression, reaffirming his readiness for long-term leadership.

Yuvraj, known for his close relationship with Gill, took to social media to congratulate the 25-year-old, praising his understanding of real responsibility. He added that Gill let his performance with the bat speak for itself — the right way to make a statement.

“Some things clearly are written in the stars. Congratulations @ShubmanGill on your first overseas century as Test captain. You clearly understand what a serious responsibility it is, and you’ve let your bat do all the talking. Well done, and here’s to many more! #INDvsENG,” Yuvraj wrote on X .

India Takes Command on Day 1 with Dominant Batting Display

After being put in to bat, Team India firmly seized control of Day 1, finishing at an imposing 359/3 by Stumps. Skipper Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten on 127 and 65, respectively, steering the team to a strong position.

The innings began with a solid 91-run opening stand between KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Brydon Carse provided England their first breakthrough by removing Rahul for 42, followed by Ben Stokes dismissing debutant Sai Sudharsan for a duck.

Undeterred, Jaiswal and Gill stitched together a crucial 129-run partnership for the third wicket, with Jaiswal bringing up his fifth Test century before falling to Stokes. Gill, taking over the captain’s mantle with composure, was then joined by Pant. The pair played with a blend of patience and flair, successfully negotiating the English attack and ensuring no further damage before the close of play.

With a stellar performance under pressure and the cricketing fraternity now hailing Shubman Gill new king, it’s clear India may have found its next long-term Test leader. His rise reflects not only a personal evolution but also signals a shift in the leadership narrative of Indian cricket.
