Delhi Capitals (DC) lost the match against Gujarat Titans (GT) by the barest of margins, by 1 run. GT got their first 2 points on the board after 2 back-to-back defeats. DC would be wondering what went wrong for them, as we can say, so close yet so far. Let’s look at the key reasons for DC’s narrow defeat against GT.
Inability to attack Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan got 3 scalps of Nitish Rana (5), Sameer Rizi (0) & Axar Patel (2). The sly wrist spinner stopped the flow of runs as well as he conceded a mere 17 runs in his 4-over spell. On a belter of a wicket, Rashid was getting sharp turn & his disciplined bowling was the difference in the end. Rashid took a 3-wicket haul in IPL after the 2023 edition.
Lack of support for KL Rahul
In a mammoth target of 211, DC needed 3 batters to smash half centuries just like GT did with Shubman Gill (70), Jos Buttler (52) & Washington Sundar (55). KL Rahul didn’t get ample support from the middle-order batters. Pathum Nissanka’s flamboyant knock of 41 runs in 24 balls somewhat laid the foundation, but it wasn’t enough. KL Rahul’s valiant 92-run knock in 52 balls went in vain. Single-digit scores from Nitish Rana (5), Sameer Rizvi (0), Axar Patel (2) & Tristan Stubbs (7) piled on pressure for the home team.
David Miller’s injury & costly judgment
David Miller’s wrist injury hit DC as he walked out of the field after 13 overs when DC’s score was 130-3. DC needed 81 runs to win from 7 overs at that time. In the very next over Axar Patel was foxed by Rashid Khan and there was a mini collapse then to 166-6 in 17 overs. David Miller then came on strike after getting some treatment on his wrist; it needed a herculean effort for DC to chase 45 runs in 18 balls.
David Miller almost did the unthinkable as he smashed a gigantic 106 metre six on 4th ball of Prasidh Krishna’s 20th over. Miller opted not to take a single on the 5th ball due to which the equation was 2 to win from 1 ball. Miller shockingly missed pull shot & Kuldeep was run out at the striker’s end. Miller (41 runs in 20 balls & 3 fours and 3 sixes) showed great sportsmanship by coming out to bat with a wrist injury, as blaming him for the defeat would be a bit harsh, but this defeat can hurt Delhi .
