CSK vs KKR: The Unreal Downfall Of KKR

It’s been a tough season for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as they are the only team out of ten yet to get a win under their belt after 5 games. They got a lucky point with a washout against PBKS, and this is their worst start ever in IPL history. Things have gone south for KKR this season despite boasting a strong squad. The performance is not coming on the field, and the team is not clicking as a unit. There are questions in leadership and management, as well as what they are doing.

KKR won the IPL in 2024 under fierce leader Shreyas Iyer and then mentor and current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir. But with KKR letting go of an IPL-winning captain, and Gautam having to leave due to national commitments, this was bound to happen to KKR. But such a fall from grace wasn’t expected and hurts all KKR fans.

Flawed Auction Strategy; Inconsistent batting order and performances hurt KKR

KKR lost the plot in the mega auction post their triumph in 2024. The Men in Purple let go of their IPL-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, in the auction and got in Ajinkya Rahane, who is a good Test captain, but not a good T20 captain at the international level. Rahane is a good guy, but lacks leadership qualities compared to Shreyas. With Gautam Gambhir leaving, we knew KKR would struggle because they are nothing without him. All the titles had him involved in some way or another.

KKR’s struggle was apparent, and adding to the woes was the auction strategy. They went big for Venkatesh Iyer last season and now Cameron Green this season. Both turned out to be flops. Venkatesh was let go this time and is with RCB now. But Green, after joining KKR, has fallen short of expectations with his performances. He is getting smashed with the ball and awful with the bat. What’s not helping is the lack of role clarity, as the batting order keeps changing for the KKR team all the time.

Green is ideally a top 3 batter, and so he should be settled there. But because he is not getting the runs, he is being shafted down to 4 or 5 and last night 6. Too much chopping and changing, and the performances aren’t coming at all. KKR has a decent squad with Tim Seifert and Manish Pandey warming the bench, but the management, which boasts of so many legends, is getting things wrong. Rahane seems clueless at times, but does he have full control of the team is a huge question to ask.

Who’s In Charge of the KKR team?

The big question facing the Kolkata Knight Riders is who is in charge of the team. Obviously, the captain is supposed to be in charge of the team on the field, but is that the case, and how much control does Ajinkya Rahane have of the team? The reason we are asking this question is that KKR has a star-studded coaching staff that has tremendous cricketing minds.

The head coach is Abhishek Nayar, and he should be in control of the proceedings and in charge of the field, with others just chipping in. But is he in charge? The coaching staff includes household names like Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo, Tim Southee, and power-hitting coach Andre Russell, to name a few. These are established T20 legends of the game and have more achievements than the coach Abhishek Nayar. So, the question is, can Abhishek make decisions and overrule these legends of the game? Plus, are they on the same page in selections?

These are questions that need to be asked, as these stalwarts aren’t expected to make errors and blunders in team selections the way they are doing this season. Plus, is there an influence from the team owners? Do they get involved in selecting the team? These are questions that are facing the KKR management today and may never be answered in the future. It’s only through performances that these questions and noise can be subdued and calmed down. The road ahead is steep, but KKR has to embrace the challenge from here.

What Lies Ahead for KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders is staring down the barrel. They are in 10th place now after finishing 8th in the 2025 season. The Knights need to start performing as soon as possible before it is too late for them. Making the playoffs looks a tad difficult from here, as they are in a must-win category almost. But salvaging the season will be of paramount importance going forward to shut the outside noise up. They won’t want to finish 10th and climb upwards in the table.

Big games coming up for Kolkata this week as they travel to Ahmedabad to face the Gujarat Titans on Friday before returning home to face RR on Sunday in Kolkata. Pathirana will join them to bolster their bowling, but they have loads of issues to address. It’s make-or-break time for Kolkata. If they lose both of their upcoming games, then the noise will only grow, and their campaign will be as good as over. Critical times ahead for the Knights.
