CSK vs DC: MS Dhoni All Set To Lead Against CSK; Ruturaj Gaikwad Under Injury Cloud- Reports

Chennai Super Kings’ injury update reveals a potential captaincy change ahead of their big home game against Delhi Capitals at Chepauk this Saturday. CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is uncertain about playing after suffering a painful elbow injury during their recent clash with Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati.

The right-handed opener was struck on his unprotected elbow in the second over while facing Tushar Deshpande against the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Though he continued to bat and scored a half-century—his second in just three games this season—his availability for the next match remains doubtful.

Chennai Super Kings Injury Update: Mike Hussey Shares Hopeful Outlook

“Yeah, we’re hoping he [Gaikwad] is going to try and have a bat today for training,” said CSK’s batting coach Mike Hussey during the pre-match press conference. “And, yeah, it [elbow] is still a little bit sore, but it’s improving every day. So, we’re very hopeful that he’ll be fine for tomorrow.”

If Ruturaj Gaikwad does not recover in time, legendary former captain MS Dhoni may be seen leading the side once again. Although MS Dhoni, now 43, is managing his workload and dealing with knee issues, his experience and leadership remain unmatched.

CSK May Tweak Line-Up Based on Injury Status

Devon Conway will likely step into the opening slot alongside Rahul Tripathi in Gaikwad’s possible absence. Rachin Ravindra could move down to No. 3 in the batting order. This shift may also impact the bowling combination, potentially bringing Anshul Kamboj in for Jamie Overton to maintain the team balance.

As Hussey hinted,

“I don’t think we’ve actually thought about that [captaincy] too much… Maybe [MS Dhoni] could do it. He’s got a bit of experience in the role, so maybe he could do it. But I’m not exactly sure, to be honest,”

Bench Strength and Young Talent in Focus

CSK has several uncapped Indian talents like Shaik Rasheed, C Andre Siddarth, and Vansh Bedi, who might get an opportunity if lineup changes are required. Additionally, 18-year-old Mumbai sensation Ayush Mhatre—who recently broke Yashasvi Jaiswal’s List A record—has joined the camp as a support player. However, his inclusion is not linked to Gaikwad’s injury.

The team’s management will decide on Gaikwad’s participation closer to the match. Until then, all eyes remain on whether Captain Cool will step in again. MS Dhoni hasn’t led the side since the IPL 2023 final as in the 2024 edition, he resigned from the captaincy post and suggested the name of Ruturag Gaikwad to be the next leader of side.
