CSK vs DC: 3 Reasons For DC’s Humiliating Defeat To CSK

DC started the tournament with two consecutive wins and looked good to rule the roost. But yesterday, they suffered their second consecutive defeat in IPL 2026. While in the last game against GT in Delhi, they lost a game from a winning position, in Chennai last night, they were beaten fair and square by the Super Kings, who played better cricket than them throughout the contest. DC had their moments, but losing by 23 runs is a significant margin in T20 cricket. We will try to analyse where DC lost the plot against the Men in Yellow.

Inability to stop the Sanju Samson-Ayush Mhatre stand pushed DC on the back foot

CSK were put into bat first by DC, and it was Sanju Samson who got off to a blazing start as he looked in great touch. Samson timed the ball well and never looked back after getting a start. He had Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain for the company, and he looked scratchy to say the least as he scored 15 off 18 balls and was perhaps playing ODI or Test cricket instead of T20Is. But he was dismissed at the right time from CSK’s point of view.

Ayush Mhatre came, and both of them complemented each other really well out there. Sanju was the storyline at the end of the night, as he looked in superb touch, but take nothing away from Mhatre, who played his part in a 113-run partnership. Mhatre got another fifty to his name. There was a lack of planning and loose deliveries dished out to both the batters, which made it easier for CSK to do well. Delhi lacked incisiveness in their bowling.

For two matches in a row, the bowling has conceded 210+ runs, and that one can say is a matter of grave concern for DC. The spinners are not being that effective, and the pacers are leaking runs. It’s still early days in the tournament, and DC are decently placed. But they need to fix these issues very quickly before it becomes a tad too late. They have the team, but need to fix these issues quickly.

Losing wickets in clusters post the power play hurts DC

DC came to chase 213 for a fantastic win and were not messing around. The openers Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul were quickly off the blocks and taking on a hapless CSK bowling attack in the powerplay. Nissanka was the chief contributor as he hogged the strike and was the aggressor of the two. But when the score reached 61 inside 5 overs, Rahul fell to Khaleel Ahmed. Thereafter, in the next over, Nissanka fell for 41 to Anshul Kamboj. Despite those setbacks, DC were decently placed at 66/2 in 6 overs of powerplay.

But it was after the power play that DC started to lose the plot. Axar Patel fell immediately after the power play, while Sameer Rizvi did not last long either. David Miller and Tristan Stubbs threatened the CSK team with their partnership that was going well, but it was never going to be enough. Miller fell for just 17 while Ashutosh Sharma made an impact but could not sustain it. Tristan Stubbs brought the fight to CSK, but he was kind of battling a lone battle.

The inability to keep the momentum going post power play hurt DC as they lost wickets at the wrong time. Going ahead, they will need to work on this area and get better at it before it becomes a lingering problem for them. Losing wickets in clusters is a huge problem in the middle phase for any team, and DC must address these issues before it’s too late. They have the team but just need confidence to bounce back.

Little or no support for Tristan Stubbs derailed DC

Tristan Stubbs fought like a warrior and took the fight to CSK. But unfortunately, there was little or no support for him from the other end. Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul gave the team a flying start, but once they fell, the DC batting fell like a pack of cards. Nissanka made 41 and was a contributor to the score. But it was all about Tristan Stubbs at the end of it all, who forged a lone battle for the Capitals.

Stubbs came out to bat when the score for DC was 76/4 in 8 overs. Stubbs first forged a partnership with Miller, who made only 17 off 14 balls as the partnership was worth 45. Stubbs kept losing partners from one end, while he kept the fight going till the end. Credit must be given to Jamie Overton of CSK for bowling his heart out and getting 4 crucial wickets. Even when DC were losing the plot, Stubbs threatened CSK. He would have hoped the middle order would give him support. But that was not to be, and DC paid the price for it in the end.

Going ahead, the team needs to hunt in a pack and not just individual performances. If they perform as a cohesive unit, they will go on to do well in this tournament. Stubbs was superb alongside Nissanka to a degree, but the rest of the batters on a flat deck just flattered to deceive. DC will want to bounce back very quickly before it is too late.
