In late 2021, Rohit Sharma was appointed captain of the Indian cricket team and Rahul Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri as head coach. In two ICC tournaments under Rohit Sharma, India finished as semi-finalists (T20 World Cup 2022) and runners-up (WTC 2021-23).
India was expected to end their ICC trophy drought but failed to do so after defeat to Australia in the ICC test championship final. The Men in Blue haven’t been able to peak in the ICC knock-out matches due to which all hard work of the team gets ruined.
Rohit Sharma can take the team forward- Mohammad Kaif
Many experts believe that the Indian cricket team is missing MS Dhoni’s leadership but according to former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif Rohit is capable of taking India to Title victories. Kaif in the show Virtual Encounters highlighted that
“Dhoni has done well. I believe the likes of Rohit Sharma and all these guys are good captains. You have Rahul Dravid as a coach, what else do you want? Ya, you miss Dhoni because he has done so well in ICC events but I think someone like Rohit Sharma can take the team forward. He has got the players and the team to win ICC events.” he added
Kaif also stated that mistakes in team selection in key ICC matches has led to downfall. This mistakes were avoided by MS Dhoni. He also added that
“They have made mistakes, you went to Australia, you picked Ashwin ahead of Chahal. Chahal was in your scheme of things in T20Is. You dropped Chahal and picked Ashwin. So you have been making all these basic mistakes,” he stated.
That’s why you talk about MS Dhoni because he knows who to play in the first XI. The major strength of Dhoni is backing his players. I think that’s what the Indian team is probably missing right now,” he added.
Exciting contest on cards
India cricket team is set to face West Indies from 12th July in 2 Test Matches as a part of 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship , 3 One-Day Internationals and 5 T20 matches . Rohit Sharma is going to lead India in Test and One Day Internationals. Hardik Pandya will be leading in T20 matches.
With focus on WC 2023, Men in Blue is expected to continue their dominance in white ball format. On other hand, Men in Maroon are expected to make strong comeback after their humiliating exit from ICC World Cup Qualifiers.
