Botswana vs Uganda: Uganda Finally Pull One Off In A Pretty Low-Scoring Affair

With the 2nd match of the day officially over, this was more of a consolation match as both sides had already been eliminated and were just playing for their pride. Seeing that Uganda did come out victorious by 8 wickets, there was a small glimpse of what we saw from them in 2024, and they really would have looked like a threat if this had been done a couple of matches earlier.

As they will not be in a playoff eliminator to decide the rest of the standings for these African Qualifiers, they just hope to finish as high as possible and potentially become even more dangerous in the next qualifiers. Their captain in Riazat Ali Shah, showed a great commitment level to his players today and really trusted them under pressure.

On the other side, Botswana have remained winless and will really have a lot of work to do before ever entering a competition like this, since they felt completely outclassed in all three of their matches. Knowing that they had several hopes of making noise during this tournament and turning the corner around for cricket in their country, this was not a great output, while they still seem to have tons of talent depth to fix.

Now that they are offically eliminated too, these playoffs will matter a lot for them in order to keep a great name and not completely fall to the bottom of the barrel. As Karabo Mothlanka will lead this side, there is a lot more expected out of him to stay in that position and continue proving that he can keep growing this side.

Botswana: Another Very Rough First Innings Has Caused This Unit To Hit A New Low

For Botswana today, their batsmen had provided no strength and were really struggling from the top to bottom with very few runs scored during their batting time. A problem for them has always been low strike rates, and it was very prevalent today as well, with their opening pair just scoring 37 runs in over 7 overs.

Looking at Vinoo Balakrishnan, he scored 24 runs and hit four great boundaries, but it came off 22 balls before getting removed, while being the first wicket. Knowing that he was gone, Monroux Kasselman continued playing extremely slowly, with his strike rate being around 50 and having scored just 20 runs in 38 deliveries.

Hitting only one four in his innings, this was a huge problem because captain, Karabo Mothlanka, also was a liability in hitting fast, as his rate was 60 while not creating any boundary threat either. Getting removed on a catch right after Kasselman, they were three-down with middle-order pieces having a real struggle as well.

Looking at Reginald Nehonde, 16 runs on 25 deliveries, he stayed in for the rest of their innings, but created absolutely no threat, and was looking like someone who was nervous to move across his crease. With that being said, and Tharindu Perera losing his wicket on one, while Thatayone Tshose scored 6, this side ended with just 81/6 in 20 overs.

Uganda: Bowlers Kept The Economy At A Very Great Rate For The Side

Looking at Uganda’s bowlers, they really were attacking with a urge to win this match today and kept looking strong whenever they needed to be. Key left-handed orthodox bowler Henry Ssenyondo had a fantastic four overs where he allowed just 12 runs, while also picking up one vital wicket under pressure.

Someone who kept changing his swing on various deliveries, it was key component to their success as he continued limiting runs and creating a strong duo with Frank Nsubuga. The 45-year-old off-spinner was tremendous in getting turn during this match, as he only allowed 13 runs during his full overs and nearly picked up a couple wickets.

Although Cosmos Kyewuta had a little bit off an expensive day with an economy around 10, the left-handed Alpesh Ramjani took one wicket while also being pretty tight in how many runs he allowed. Giving up much less than 4 per over, there was one of the key in-swinging deliveries that completely helped him dominate his overs today.

Knowing that captain Riazat Ali Shah was also able to take two wickets, in his two clean overs, this was someone who only allowed seven runs during that period and was key in the middle when Botswana started ramping tempo a little bit. Finally, Dinesh Nankrani closed it out well after having four magnificent overs and getting two wickets in them.

Uganda: Run Chase Was Quite Simple In This Match To Help Them Win Pretty Easily

Seeing the Uganda batting lineup, they showed a lot of strength during the chase today and seemed to have much more consistency. Starting with opener Raghav Dhawan, he was able to hit another half-century and made sure to be a lead in this innings after seeing a few wickets falling around.

With Ronald Lutaaya getting removed without even facing a delivery, this side was under pressure already after the first over since they tended to show a few struggles in their last couple matches. But, Dhawan was able to continue building a 20+ run partnership with Robinson Obuya that helped them start going in the powerplay. Although it was all Dhawan, Obuya did a good job being his opposite runner for one over before getting out on a clean-duck.

The other big story was the partnership between Dhawan and Sumeet Verma as they were able to great the game-winning runs together. Scoring over 60 in that massive duo, which helped them win, Sumeet Verma did go a bit slow, but it was ok because there wasn’t much of a huge total to chase down.

Going at 29 in just 30 deliveries, he was key during the end with two massive sixes, while also hitting a solid four. On the other end, Dhawan finished at 54 runs with a strike rate that was well over 120 and scored 8 boundaries. Someone whose really been big in these crucial situations, he showed it once again to help Uganda gain a little confidence back,

Botswana: Expensive Attack Had Another Very Tough Day

Now that we look at Botswana’s bowlers, they really couldn’t do much and struggled to create any type of wicket-taking threat. Although at the beginning, Boemo Kgosiemang did pick up a wicket, it was quite shocking that they didn’t give him another over despite only allowing 9 runs.

With Katlo Piet bowling all 4 overs, he still went over a 6.5 economy, while providing no ability to take wickets, and felt a little lost during his last couple overs. Thatyaone Tshone had one rough over as well since he allowed 14 runs, while Benjamin Jack Richards couldn’t get out of his one over because it ended up being the one that led to game-winning runs.
