Despite bowling India out for just 150 in the first innings, Australia appeared to be in control. However, India’s stand-in captain, Jasprit Bumrah, had other plans. He delivered a match-winning performance, taking a five-wicket haul in the first innings to dismiss Australia for a mere 104.

Bumrah then added to the damage with two crucial wickets in the final session of Day 3, leaving Australia with a mountain to climb in their chase. Bumrah was named Player of the Match for his impressive figures of 5/30 and 3/42. Pat Cummins lauded his counterpart’s consistency, acknowledging Bumrah as one of the best bowlers in the world .The hosts folded for a mere 238 in reply as India took a 1-0 series lead with a thumping 295-run win.

Despite the disappointing loss, Pat Cummins remained optimistic, pointing out that it’s just one game and there’s still a lot of cricket to be played this summer. India and Australia have four more matches left in the series. He emphasized the importance of getting back on the horse quickly and using this loss as an opportunity to regroup and improve.

Australia captain Pat Cummins doesn’t anticipate changes to their playing XI despite a 295-run hammering in the opening Test against India at the Optus Stadium in Perth. However, the right-arm speedster stressed the need for introspection to make a comeback in the five-Test series against India.

Australia’s woeful batting performance in their first innings, folding for 104, followed by an uninspired bowling performance were the chief reasons that the hosts crumbled to a 295-run loss. Although they showed admirable resistance, a 534-run target left India plenty of runs to play with and they finished the job after tea. Travis Head looked the most impressive among Aussie batters on day four, scoring 89 runs.

Speaking to ABC Radio, Cummins stated:

“I’d be very surprised if we changed anything.”

A while later, speaking to SEN Radio, the 31-year-old remarked:

“I’m not a selector but I dare say there won’t be any changes.”

Pat Cummins managed two wickets in the first innings and one in the second. Due to his underwhelming show with the ball in Perth, the quick will be under pressure heading into the second Test in Adelaide.

“I’m sure this week there will be plenty of conversations” – Pat Cummins

Pat Cummins suggested that the team were putting in the hard yards, but underlined the need to put in plenty more ahead of the pink-ball fixture in Adelaide. Speaking to Fox Sports, he said:

“There’s a lot of experience there, this summer it’s a sample size of one, I think they’re going about their work really well. But no doubt we’ve got a bit of work to do and I’m sure this week there will be plenty of conversations and plenty of time in the nets and conversations around if we come up against a similar attack in similar conditions, what are those things we could have done better.”

With a few days’ rest ahead, Pat Cummins is looking forward to the team’s next match in Adelaide, where they’ll aim to bounce back stronger and more determined. Australia have never lost a day-night Test match held in Adelaide and will look to bank on the record to go into the match with confidence.  The action now shifts to Adelaide for the Day-Night pink-ball Test, starting 6 December.
