That is true in cricket just the way it is in life, and these are the questions legends must face in the twilight of their careers. This moment to depose and replace the great Indian cricketing superstars of the past and present may therefore not be as distant or out of reach as it once was for two of India’s most famous sons, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The whispers are growing louder: is this the end road for them?

The Rise of two Titans

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are two cricketers, whose cricketing careers are actually tailor made for the big screen. Virat Kohli with his assertive nature and the hunger to achieve more and more took up the reigns of modern Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma the ‘Hitman’ looked venerable heading the house, who could single handedly change the ramp, by hitting those effortless sixes.

The two great players have given Indian cricket a lot of pleasant moments. Starting from Virat Kohli’s run chases to Rohit Sharma’s ability of converting tons into double tons in limited overs format they are the pillar in Indian batting arsenal. However, you know that every story of a super hero is peppered with some amount of trouble.

A Look at the Decline

Despite this all, recent years reveal that there are small signs of chinks in what was once considered hermetic defenses. The foreign conditions have not been favorable to Rohit Sharma. While his performances have been outstanding on home territory, circuits which respond to his natural style of play, his performances in foreign countries have elicited much criticism. These features have been a source of concern and he has particularly under performed on seaming tracks and failed to make big scores after getting good starts especially during tough weather conditions.

Even the world’s best batsman of all time across both Test and limited-overs cricket, Virat Kohli, had endured a lean patch. However, from the year 2020 his form has slightly reduced. While once a source of momentary creative bursts, it has become rare to even experience that now. People to this day recall his solitary note during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy when he was the sole gentleman among wreckage. But cricket is an unfair game and inherent steadiness is the highest value.

The Weight of Expectations

A Time for Reflection

But is this truly the end? Yet, they came back stronger.

What Lies Ahead?

Focus on their strengths. Learn from the past.

But one thing is certain:

India’s next red-ball assignment is against England in June 2025 and the matches would be played with Dukes ball which swings sharply. The richest board needs to take a decision whether to persist with the star players or give a chance to the young blood who somewhat have a more hunger to succeed.
