David Warner, a retired Australian opener, has offered to open for his country in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The left-handed opener assured the selectors that he was ready to play in the upcoming Sheffield Shield match and was available for selection if they needed someone at the top.

After Australia’s elimination in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the New South Wales opener called it quits on his international career. He was one of Australia’s top openers when he retired from Test cricket earlier this year against Pakistan in Sydney. However, since David Warner’s retirement, Australia has not been able to settle on an opener.

David Warner had an illustrious career at the top order for Australia. He was the first Australian player without first-class cricket experience to be selected for a national team in any format in 132 years. He is the fourth player to win the Allan Border Medal in successive years and to win it more than once. The only batter from Australia to reach seven ODI hundreds in a single year is him.

David Warner On His Return To International Cricket For Australia

The veteran told News Corp that he is preparing for the Test series at the same level as the other players. The southpaw therefore said that he has no concerns about playing in a Sheffield Shield match. He stated:

“I’m always available, just got to pick up the phone. I’m always dead serious. Let’s be honest, the guys have played one red ball game (first round of the shield) since their last Test matches in February, so I’ve almost had the same preparation.

“Honestly, if they really needed myself for this series, I’m more than happy to play the next Shield game and go out there and play. I did retire for the right reasons to finish the game, and I wanted to finish. (But) my hand is up if they desperately need someone.”

Sam Konstas, Marcus Harris, and Cameron Bancroft, among others, have displayed encouraging signs of taking the top spot. Their most recent performances on the home circuit, meanwhile, haven’t been particularly strong.

David Warner also shared his opinions on Australia’s batting order, stating that they may experience some difficulties due to Cameron Green’s absence. Additionally, he put Konstas’ name forward to eventually become their opener.

“My take on it is I liked what they were thinking last year with the fact Greeny is in their best top six. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an opener. I think you can have someone else that can come in and bat three and Marnus could open,”

“Konstas can definitely in time be that long-term opening batsman and look there is every opportunity for him there to potentially do that, but I think you still have to see a little bit more.” said David Warner.

The Border Gavaskar  series against India begins on November 22 in Perth.
