AUS vs SA: Dewald Brevis’s Journey from Childhood Dreams to CSK Stardom: Driven by AB de Villiers and Passion

In a society where academic success sometimes eclipses athletic aspirations, Dewald Brevis forged a distinct route—one paved with unadulterated passion, unwavering conviction, and a boyhood pledge to himself. In a recent statement, the rising Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star echoed his unshakeable belief as a young child in South Africa: “Told mumma, I am never going to study.” The story of Brevis, who is lovingly referred to as “Baby AB” due to his striking likeness to cricket legend AB de Villiers, is one of perseverance, fortuity, and guidance. The emotional pulse of cricket, the kind that motivates aspirants of all ages, is the subject of his story, which goes beyond runs and records.

The quiet certainty of a youngster who knew his destiny was where Dewald Brevis’ cricketing adventure started, not in prestigious academies or in the limelight of junior tournaments. I used to tell my mother that I would never be able to study. “After I finish school, I want to play cricket,” Brevis revealed in a recent interview with SuperSport. Cricket always stirred his soul, even when he experimented with other sports.

Dewald Brevis remembers when he first saw his childhood hero, AB de Villiers.

This passion was not merely self-motivated; a hero molded it. For Brevis, AB de Villiers was more than simply a renowned South African; he was the epitome of everything the young batter wanted to be. Brevis first encountered de Villiers when he was eating with his family at the Hazlewood Culture Club. Brevis remembered, “AB and his wife walked past us and I just froze.” “I wanted to ask for a picture, but I was having trouble saying it.” “AB, come for a picture,” his wife suggested, and that’s how I got my first picture with him.

A deeper spark was ignited by that time. When de Villiers was visiting Brevis’ school a few days later, destiny stepped in once more. Brevis, still feeling overwhelmed, plucked up the nerve to ask for his number. “You can refuse, but could I please have your number, AB?” he stammered. To his surprise, de Villiers complied. During the lockdown, the two continued to communicate and share cricketing views, and their simple conversation developed into a mentorship.

Since that time, Brevis’s career has taken off. He has participated in 14 games across all forms since making his debut for his country against Australia in August 2023. He is known as “Baby AB” because of his reckless style and powerful stroke play, which have led to parallels to his idol. However, his skill was really highlighted by CSK’s choice to sign him in the middle of the 2025 Indian Premier League season. His magnificent 41-ball century against Australia solidified his reputation, leading de Villiers to refer to CSK’s decision as “the biggest masterstroke ever.”

Brevis is now a representation of youthful boldness—a young man who disregarded authority, followed his instincts, and proudly dons the CSK yellow. This story serves as a reminder that sometimes the most effective education comes from beliefs rather than books. And for every youngster who dreams while brandishing a bat, Dewald Brevis is a real example of how passion can change lives when it is cultivated.
