Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have named Mohammad Rizwan the new ODI skipper for Australia ODI leg assignment starting from 4th November at MCG. Earlier Babar Azam resigned from the post of white ball captaincy after a forgettable T20 WC 2024. Mohammad Rizwan is not new to leadership as he has captained Multan Sultans (MS) in PSL and won title but captaining a national team is quite challenging.

Pakistani fans would be hoping that there is a revolution in the white ball format as well; prior to this upcoming ODI series Pakistan won  the Test series against England by 2-1 against all odds. The lethal trio of Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah & Shaheen Afridi can be deadly and they need to contain the batters and bowl wicket to wicket.

It won’t be wrong to say that PCB is going through a bit turmoil after the sudden resignation of Gary Kirsten from the ODI & T20I side. The interim head coach Jason Gillespie though has a strenuous task on his hands as Aussies have the knack of finding multiple match winners on the given day. Gillespie was quite furious when he didn’t have a say in the selection of playing 11 & had said  that he is a ‘Match Day Strategist’.

Mohammad Rizwan is an experienced player- Wasim Akram

Wasim Akram was having an online press conference in Melbourne. Wasim Akram was well aware of the fact that Mohammad Rizwan would be tested in Australia. Wasim Akram pointed out that Mohammad Rizwan has captained teams throughout his career having a pretty good track record of leading Multan Sultans (MS) in Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“Rizwan is an experienced player. He has captained teams throughout his career, leading Multan Sultans in the PSL to one trophy and two finals. When it comes to leadership, he’s a seasoned campaigner,”  said Wasim Akram

“This is his first tour as captain, and it’s a challenging one. It’s tough to beat Australia in Australia, especially in ODI cricket. In T20I cricket, there’s a chance, maybe, but Australia in ODI cricket is a tough team to beat,” he added.

Crucial ODI Series for Australia

All eyes will be on Smith & Labuschagne to play out the phase of middle overs smartly. Given that BGT 2024-25 is just door steps away, especially Smith would be aiming to get back to runs; the format may be different but when Smith excels then Australia get the self belief that they can beat the opposition even against the run of play.

The destructive batters Travis Head & Mitchell Marsh have been rested due to paternity leave. Jake Fraser-McGurk & Matthew Short are set to open the batting and we can’t rule out carnage in the powerplay overs given the surface at MCG is quite a batting paradise. It won’t be wrong to say that we will see cut-throat competition between Jake Fraser-McGurk & Matthew Short in this ODI series as ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is around the corner.
