AUS vs BAN: Mighty Australia Get A Reality Check

Pat Cummins‘ brigade was thoroughly outplayed by Bangladesh in the 1st Test Match. The Bangladeshi Tigers won in a grand fashion by winning the match by 9 wickets. The peculiarity of the win for Bangladesh was that they played traditional Test cricket which irked Australia  & were quite disciplined in all the 3 facets of the match rather than going berserk with the bat.

Questions a plenty for Australia

The trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc & Josh Hazlewood looked very much off-color. There was a lot of buzz when Josh Hazlewood came in the playing 11 ahead of the lethal Scott Boland, who has good control. It looked as if Mitchell Starc & skipper Pat Cummins lacked the flair. It’s quite annihilating that an inexperienced yet stable Bangladeshi batting lineup made Australia look like a club side.

It looked as if Pat Cummins & co lacked preparation, as they had a simulation session, not a practice match. Bangladesh played a tour game in which they got brutally exposed but outshone Australia in the 1st Test Match & created headlines across world cricket. There’s a bit of irony given how no one gave Bangladesh a chance & yet they silenced Aussies in their own den dominantly.

Potential serious headache for Cricket Australia (CA)

Aussies have a bumper Test schedule till the 2027 Ashes, a total of potentially 19 Test matches (*if they qualify for ICC WTC 2025-27 final). It is going to be a gruelling task for (CA) to manage the workload of Cummins (33), Mitchell Starc (36) & Josh Hazlewood (35), Nathan Lyon (38), Scott Boland (37) & Steven Smith (37). It will require more than a miracle, given that all these 5 players are somewhat past their prime.

The WTC rankings have taken a bit of a hit for Aussies. It’s quite clear that Australia will have to play out of their skin from now on. There’s no chance for any kind of complacency. Aussies have endured a tough run since the triumph of the 2023 ODI WC, with no trophies in 4 occasions (2024 T20 WC, ICC CT 2025, ICC WTC 2025-27 & ICC T20 WC 2026), as their casual approach is costing them somewhat.

The upcoming Test assignments are going to be very uphill for Australia. South Africa’s away 3 Test matches, Kiwis playing 4 Tests in Australia & BGT 2027 in India. The future for Pat Cummins’ unit looks scary, as sticking to the same crop of players can be heart-wrenching, given injury to any player will wreck the team even more.

It’s quite crystal clear that CA won’t change their stance of giving a bunch of youngsters a rope in upcoming Test matches. The pedigree of Australian cricket is under threat. It’s often said that Aussies never give up but it seems that this is the end of the road for Australia, as we witnessed a macabre opening Test against Bangladesh.

It is often said that Aussies can bounce back from any position & if that happens in these long Test matches scheduled, it would be gigantic. We can say that CA has no great option other than to stick with the ongoing strategy of Pat Cummins & head coach Andrew McDonald of sticking to the same players. Only time will tell, but Bangladesh would be eyeing a clean sweep of Australia in the 2nd Test match starting on 22nd August & if that happens, we can say that Australian cricket has lost its arsenal.
