Asia Cup 2025: Atul Wassan’s Strong Stance On India vs Pakistan Rivalry

Following the high-voltage Asia Cup Super Four clash between India and Pakistan in Dubai, former cricketer Atul Wassan offered a strong perspective on the hype surrounding the fixture. Despite the excitement and passion generated by the latest meeting, Atul Wassan urged fans and media not to let the storied rivalry overshadow the essence of cricket itself.

Atul Wassan’s Post-Match Take

Speaking after the game, Atul Wassan posed a striking question, and suggested that there remains no rivalry based on the competitiveness and the rivalry is just media created.

“I mean, we have said this before, and all that and who is in their right mind who would consider it as a rivalry? I mean, writing is on the wall, and the players also know that. So, I think don’t try to bring more focus on yourself by picking a fight or staring down or saying something or needling the players because on the field the results are there that you will be embarrassed. So, I think I don’t know why this hype about the everyday coverage of this match is there, because I think everybody knows that there is a huge chasm between the two teams,” Atul Wassan says regarding the match.

Controversial Gestures Steal Spotlight

The cricketing spectacle was quickly overshadowed by controversy. Sahibzada Farhan, after reaching his half-century, celebrated with a shooting gun gesture a move many labeled insensitive in light of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 tourists lost their lives.

Adding fuel to the fire, Haris Rauf gestured “0-6” towards Indian fans in response to chants of “Virat Kohli” from the stands. Both gestures drew sharp criticism, particularly from former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who condemned the actions as tasteless and disrespectful.

While reactions mounted, Atul Wassan downplayed the gestures, urging fans and media not to fuel the fire. “Why are you taking it seriously? You are stupid if you take their actions seriously,” he said. “Don’t pay attention to them and don’t see them in this connotation.”

His remarks stood in contrast to the outrage, aiming instead to steer the focus back to cricket and away from provocation. In his eyes the fixture should be tread just as a cricket match and rivalry be kept on the pitch.

What should have been remembered as a match defined by India’s emphatic six-wicket win and Abhishek Sharma’s explosive batting turned into a storm of political and emotional reactions. Wassan’s comments serve as a reminder that while rivalries will always stir passions, the game itself must remain at the heart of the conversation rather than the gestures, controversies, or political point-scoring that follow.
