Asia Cup 2025 : Former Selector Kris Srikkanth slams Harshit Rana’s inclusion in 2025 Asia Cup squad

Indian speedster Harshit Rana has been picked over the likes of Gujarat Titans pace duo Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj for the Asia Cup 2025, alongside the two other pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.Harshit Rana has picked crucial wickets for India in the Champions Trophy as well as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Harshit Rana has made his name among the Indian pacers and has finally made the cut to be included as India’s third pacer for the Asia Cup.

India announced their 15-man squad for the Asia Cup 2025 starting next month. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar made some telling omissions while some surprising inclusions for a tournament that serves as dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup next year. None of the inclusions were as head turning as those of KKR duo Rinku Singh and Harshit Rana, both who struggled in IPL 2025 .

Among the unexpected selections were those of Rinku Singh and Harshit Rana. The KKR duo struggled in IPL 2025 but managed to retain their place in India’s scheme of things. Ajit Agarkar revealed that Rinku was named as a reserve batter. The left-hander is not expected to be in the starting XI but could come in should the team management look got options.

Rinku has played as finisher for India, a role Jitesh Sharma is expected to take over. Nonetheless, Rinku Singh’s selection meant Agarkar had to a leave out a lot of options. That included Washington Sundar, who starred in the India vs England Tests recently.

Kolkata Knight Riders paceman Harshit Rana is about to make his Asia Cup debut, since he has been picked over the likes of several senior Indian pacers. Rana’s pick has stirred up some controversies within the Indian team.

Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna might be considered for the Indian Test side, as a result of which they have probably been snubbed from the Asia Cup team. The Asia Cup ends just 4 days before the West Indies red-ball tour begins; hence, this decision might have been made to manage the workload of the pacers. Though initially criticized, Harshit Rana has often shown why Gautam Gambhir pins his faith on him and picks him over the likes of many experienced Indian speedsters.

Harshit Rana’s stop-start India career got another lease of life. The Delhi pacer was sent home from the England series but now has managed to be among India’s 15. Harshit Rana had leapfrogged Mohammed Siraj for a place in the Champions Trophy 2025 squad.

Harshit Rana continues to preferred ahead of Prasidh Krishna in limited overs cricket. India captain Suryakumar Yadav backed Harshit Rana to come good if the team calls upon him during the tournament. Ex-chief selector Kris Srikkanth blasts inclusion of Harshit Rana instead of Siraj or Krishna.

Former Selector Kris Srikkanth slams Harshit Rana’s inclusion in 2025 Asia Cup squad

Former India men’s team’s chief selector Kris Srikkanth is not happy with the T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad announced on August 19. Srikkanth wonders how Harshit Rana retained his place in the side ahead of Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj. The former Indian opener pointed out Rana’s economy which was over 10 in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).
“Where did Harshit Rana come from? He was so poor in the IPL. He is being managed. He had an economy rate of 10 in the IPL. What message are you giving to Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj?” Kris Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel ‘Cheeky Chaka’.
In the IPL 2025, Harshit Rana claimed 15 wickets from 13 games at an average of 29.86. His economy rate was 10.18 runs per over. The 23-year-old made his T20I debut earlier this year as a controversial concussion substitute for Shivam Dube. He picked three wickets for 33 runs in India’s win.
On the other hand, Siraj in his debut season for Gujarat Titans (GT), claimed 16 wickets from 15 appearances at an average of 32.93 and economy rate of 9.24. He was in sublime form in the Test series against England, taking most wickets. Krishna stood out in the IPL 2025. Attacking the batters alongside Siraj for GT, he won the purple cap with 25 wickets from 15 games at an average of 19.52. His economy rate of 8.27 runs per over was impressive too considering the batting-friendly tracks in most encounters.
In addition, Kris Srikkanth is struggling to understand how Shivam Dube fits into the team if he bats at no.8. He feels Washington Sundar, who is among the five standbys, should have been in the squad if they want a sixth bowler in the playing XI.
“They will make Tilak Varma the sixth bowler. Is Abhishek Sharma going to be your sixth bowler or Shivam Dube? He hardly bowled in the IPL. This is an adjustment selection. If you needed someone who can bat and bowl at No. 8, Washington Sundar would have been ideal. Shivam Dube at No. 8 does not make any sense.”
India have been placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, and will begin their campaign against the UAE on September 10. Group B consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. Also Read: ENG vs IND : Shubman Gill Appointed Test Skipper For Red Ball
