Don’t forget Shubman Gill was not dropped- Devang Gandhi

Former India selector Devang Gandhi has explained why Shubman Gill should be India’s vice-captain for the 2025 Asia Cup. Shubman was officially appointed the vice-captain of the white-ball teams after the Zimbabwe series, which took place following the 2024 T20 World Cup. Shubman Gill led the Men in Blue in the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.
With an eye on the future, the selectors bestowed Shubman Gill with vice-captaincy. He assisted Rohit Sharma in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which India won with a victory over New Zealand in the final.A few days before the selection meeting for the Asia Cup, Devang reminded everyone of the reason behind Gill’s absence from the T20I team.

“Don’t forget that he was not dropped when India was playing T20 cricket in South Africa towards the end of the year, a series India won 3-1. He was rested after the New Zealand series in India as the team was about to embark on the tour of Australia, and after his immense success in the IPL as a player and captain, everything suggests he should be vice-captain in the Asia Cup”.

Shubman Gill’s return will surely see one of the batsmen losing his place. It could be one of the openers or someone from the middle order. Shubman Gill, who moved from number 3 to 4 position after being named the Test captain, might continue to open the innings in the Asia Cup due to India’s packed middle-order.
