England had a productive afternoon session against the mighty Aussies. Joe Root looked elegant in his unbeaten 68 runs in 129 balls. England managed to score 196-4 at the end of the session. The visitors would be backing themselves for yet another similar session as they yielded 98 runs and lost 2 wickets in the session.
Zak Crawley misses out on a ton
Zak Crawley would rue the fact that he couldn’t convert his start into a big ton. Michael Neser who was bowling the 28th over, sent back Zak Crawley. The English opener scored 76 runs in 93 balls, and the partnership between Joe Root of Zak Crawley was broken. The duo added 117 runs in 152 balls.
Harry Brook’s approach was quite fearless; he didn’t allow any bowler to settle down. Harry Brook made sure that he didn’t allow the bowlers to settle down as even when Alex Carey was at the stumps, he was intrepid in his shot selection. At the end of the drinks break, England’s score was 166-3.
Mitchell Starc gets a huge wicket of Harry Brook
Mitchell Starc was introduced into the bowling attack in the 40th over. Mitchell Starc bowled a wide off-stump full-length delivery on the second ball & enticed Harry Brook for a cover drive and gave a catch to Steve Smith in slip. Harry Brook looked quite dejected as he was scoring quickly in his knock of 31 runs in 33 balls, as he had hit 4 fours. England’s score at that time was 176-4
Ben Stokes & Joe Root then made sure that there were no more hiccups in the innings. Ben Stokes was quite happy to play the role of anchor as his defense was quite laudable. Steve Smith was seen marshalling his troops very smartly as the field placements were quite unique. Ben Stokes was unperturbed with short ball & even off stump channel line & length.
What lies ahead in the evening session
England would be eyeing a score in excess of 350+. The onus undoubtedly would be on England’s two finest batters Joe Root & Ben Stokes to bat out the last session of Day 1. Joe Root has a golden chance to smash his maiden Test ton in Australia whose score is 68. Australia on the other hand needs a bunch of wickets as they most likely will bat last in Test match. Perhaps Cameron Green needs to be introduced into attack for wickets.
