With the final of this African tri-series finally over, it was a more-than-dominant victory by one side, as South Africa seemed to control almost every part of this match. Seeing that this South African unit was the one to come out on top, it was a very good chance for their young players to understand how to play in a match of immense importance and play under pressure.
Knowing that a lot of movement could happen after this series, one key thing to mention is that this Proteas group could be even more dominant down the line, since everyone is still between 24 and 28. Led by captain Bjorn Fortuin, his dream could finally come true: to play for the main squad after a tremendous effort in being a leader here.
On the Zimbabwe side of things, this loss showed a massive problem that is still impacting them and not letting their side reach the pinnacle of cricket. Even though their year started off very strong with big-time wins against sides like Australia and Sri Lanka in the World Cup, plus a couple of top-class series, the inconsistencies are affecting them in a big way and could lead them to fail in the next couple of games.
A unit that was trying to break apart from everyone after this latest T20 performance in February; it looks like nothing is going to happen, and wholesale changes will need to be made. With Sikandar Raza having a big-time role in fixing this side, he will need to do it quickly, as he is looking to further extend his career.
South Africa: Batting Lineup Had Another Demolishing Performance To Win This Match
Looking at the Proteas’ batting performance, it was nothing more than a massive success for all their key players around. With Connor Esterhuzien opening once again, this was a big deal because he was able to lay a great 84-run partnership with Jordan Hermann as they both seemed to play in an aggressive manner.
Seeing that Esterhuzien was able to develop 32 runs off 23 balls, he smashed three massive sixes and also found the gap twice for four. Meanwhile, Hermann kept on building his score with Dewald Brevis as they were able to get the total up to 93/2 before he ended up getting removed for 53 runs off 29 balls, while hitting 8 fours.
At two down, Tony De Zorzi had finally suprisingly played at more than a 100 strike rate as he created a near 30-run partnership with Brevis, where the left-handed two-down piece was able to produce 17 runs. Seeing that helped them reach 122; Brevis continued his mission from the other side and built a 47-run partnership with Rubin Hermann.
As the rising superstar hit 32 runs and demolished four boundaries, he was a major key in helping South Africa raise the run rate, while Hermann hit 27 himself with four combined boundaries as well. Closing it out, Duan Jansen was a major key who finished with a 23-run knock as he produced multiple fours on his own.
Zimbabwe: Nightmare Day For Bowling Attack To Produce Anything Successful
On the Chevrons’ side, their bowling really seemed to be off the mark and they continued getting smashed everywhere around. The only pacer to show up was star Blessing Muzarabani, whose height and whip-like action allowed him to concede just 25 runs in four overs, while having a fantastic 18th over in which he just leaked five. Someone on this side can always rely on; despite not picking up a wicket today, he was still far ahead of the rest in overall performance.
Brad Evans was also pretty solid, as he took two wickets in his own right and was just giving up a 9 economy, but after that it became a complete mess for this Chevrons unit in the fast-bowling department.
Kundai Matigimu couldn’t even complete his full overs because he got smashed for 36 in just two, and it felt like batsmen were just pouncing on him at their own will. Although he is usually a masterful piece in at least creating some pressure, it didn’t look like that at all, while Newman Nyamhuri also gave up 50+ runs from the left-end, even though he got a couple of late wickets.
When talking about spin, Sikandar Raza did his usual job of picking up a 7-to-8 economy, but outside of him, Wessly Madhevre didn’t provide any threat because he wasn’t finding the right turn on this pitch and ended up leaking almost 13.5 an over instead of being a benefit.
Zimbabwe: Tough Batters’ Performance Got Saved Towards The End
When seeing how the Chevrons ended up playing today, it was definitely not a great job by their batting unit at all, as their chase-down seemed to be more of a keeping-it-close effort rather than actually winning the match. Getting it under 50 runs from the target at the end, this unit started off very poorly, with Ben Curran getting out first for a clean duck.
Seeing that Ben Curran normally tends to be the best left-handed piece up front, this was a big loss, with Brian Bennett following right behind him at 12/2 after just hitting one four. Seeing that they were getting hammered this early on, Innocent Kaia didn’t make much of a difference either, as he had to depart for 9 runs in just 11 balls.
With Wessly Madhevere going down right after him, they were at 25/4 when the last two remaining pieces they could rely on to turn the game were Ryan Burl and Sikandar Raza. Although they did create a very solid 27-run partnership, Burl had to depart for 13 runs off 10 balls with two fours, and it felt like Murumani failed in no time to make it 57/6.
What looked like it would easily be a score of below 90 all out, then changed after Sikandar Raza’s wicket because of Kundai Matigimu and Brad Evans, who developed some amazing shots together. As they made a 50+ partnership together, Evans then kept going and hit a 50+ score with over 7 combined boundaries.
South Africa: Dominant Day For All The Bowlers On This Unit
The Proteas just had a great day bowling all-around, and it really made an impact on how Zimbabwe could bat against them. Rising pacer Duan Jansen took three wickets from the left-end as he continued to show how important he is down the line, while keeping the economy at a decent level in the overs he was bowling.
Kwena Mahapka did a great job in his two overs, allowing just 9 runs and picking up a big-time wicket, while keeping his economy at a minimal 4.5. On the right side, Eathan Bosch did a tremendous job by taking two wickets and keeping his economy at over 7, while Bijan Fortuin was the main spinner who took three wickets at a 6.00 economy.
