As the 4th T20I is done, with South Africa coming out on top and officially being the first team in the finals, this is a huge development, as they have proven how much young talent has impacted and will affect their future. Something that was in question earlier in this series: they keep beating the questions that are coming after them, and there is way more confidence in this side replacing what is on the main squad right now. With this being their second match in a row of beating Zimbabwe, it has become clear that they own this nation, and competition keeps widening between both sides. Led by Bjorn Fourtin, he has continued doing well in his leadership development to get a main position on this squad.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe are in a world of trouble since they now could be once potential Namibia, far from not even making this Tri-Series final. Although they seemed to be a very strong unit heading into the tournament after their recent surge in this format, it has not lasted, and there could be several changes on the way. Losing to the same team again and again slowly starts to become a major problem, and they really need to do something in order to not only fix, but also build for the future. Despite their main leader being Sikandar Raza, he only has so much time left, which makes the situation that much more stressful, and it has to be fixed quickly.
South Africa: Finally Show Out With Bat And Put A Strong Score Up
As the Proteas had their breakout batting performance for the first time in this tri-series, it was clear this unit was on a mission to focus on scoring runs with nothing else in mind. The opening pair helped the side build a massive 68-run partnership, with Jordan Hermann a clear star from the get-go. With him creating 28 runs on 25 balls and smashing two massive sixes, Lhuan-Dre Pretorious was on the other end, creating a lot of danger as well. Seeing that Pretorious finally had a strong start after struggling in his first couple of matches this series, he was massive in that first combination, while also building an amazing one with Dewald Brevis after Hermann got out.
The way he and Brevis played today is something anyone would fear, as they both developed 86 runs together, with the young right-handed superstar at one down scoring 41 runs today. Seeing that Brevis has continued to be on fire, he is now approaching 200+ runs for this tri-series, while his ability to create shots from just standing in one place and firing no-look deliveries was on full display. Meanwhile, Pretorius kept attacking hard from the left as he was still in till South Africa was 5-down and lost three batsmen really quickly. Although he wasn’t able to complete his full century, Pretorius was able to get them to 180 before the Proteas ended up at 185.
Zimbabwe: Bowling Really Had A Rough Day Except For Spinners
On this Chevrons side, the story of their bowling attack was rough, as many of their pacers couldn’t perform highly successfully. Outside of Brad Evans, who took two wickets and gave up a little over 8 runs an over, everyone else struggled and couldn’t create the same havoc. Left-handed Newman Nyamhuri had his early aches, and despite a strong finish, which helped him just allow 30 runs in 4 overs, he was only able to get one wicket today towards the end. Kundai Matigamu was having a rough day in his day of replacing Blessing Muzarabani, and the Chevrons just ended up giving him two overs, since his economy was stuck at around 14.5.
Talking about spinners, Sikandar Raza didn’t have the best of days either, as he gave up 9 an over, but Wesley Madhevere really saved this side from disaster. Taking three wickets, he allowed just 20 runs in his three overs, while finally getting the turn required on these pitches and bowling at the current elevation. Sometimes he used to miss the height completely, and many batsmen could take advantage of him, but he was finally about to put together a strong performance and change the trajectory of this match in the middle. Allowing less than 7 runs an over, he was the only player to do it for them today, and that made the score somewhat chaseable.
Zimbabwe: The Batters Came Out At Absolutely Flat In Today’s Performance
Looking at the way this Zimbabwe unit batted today, it seemed like they weren’t ready at all and had one of the most lackluster performances in recent times. Opener Brian Bennett did have a solid early combination with Ben Curran, where they both combined for 20 runs before Curran was the first wicket to fall for just 4 runs.
Meanwhile, Bennett continued building his early innings and finished with a six, plus four before getting out at 33/2. Right after he was removed, Zimbabwe showed that they were lacking the ability to play spin today, and Wesley Madhevere fell really fast right after him. With this side looking at 33/3, Innocent Kaia had to come in for big developments.
Despite Kaia not being the strongest suit, he was able to create 18 runs and hit two boundaries, before becoming the 4th guy to fall early for this unit. Ryan Burl, whose this unit’s go-to finisher, also couldn’t provide his end-of-game element or special moments because his time at the crease was short-lived in three balls. With Zimbabwe being 51/5, the last combination that could have provided anything was Sikandar Raza and Tadiwanshe Murumani, but both Murumani and Brad Evans fell, which created a 51/6 collapse. Despite Wellington Masakadza coming in to create two boundaries, his wicket led Raza to be the only main batter who finished strong with 45 runs and 7 combined boundaries, while Zimbabwe were well off their target.
South Africa: The Most Elite Showing By Bowlers All Tournament Long
For the Proteas, this outing was the most complete bowling performance they have had in a while, and it put a positive light on what the future could hold. Duan Jansen was the main piece from the left-end as he proved to be a dominant wicket-taker once again with three, while his economy and ability to hit against have become much harder.
Allowing a little over 5 runs an over, he has truly been dominant as an option that can create bouncers, while Kwena Maphaka was a bit more expensive as the other lefty. For righties, Prenelan Subrayen was an absolutely dominant threat who took another wicket in his own right, while spinner Bjorn Fortuin was the other dominant spin threat with 4 wickets and 24 overs in almost his full overs.
