However, according to Ashwin, experience should also bring a better understanding of when to take risks and when to play according to the demands of the match.
During the recent two-Test series, Pant scored 168 runs and registered two half-centuries. While those numbers reflected his ability to contribute with the bat, his shot selection continued to attract attention. Ashwin believes that Pant’s attacking mindset needs to be accompanied by stronger situational awareness, particularly during decisive phases of a Test.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin openly admitted that Pant has not completely met the expectations he had from him. “My expectation from Rishabh Pant has not been fulfilled till now,” Ashwin said, making it clear that his assessment comes from the high standards he has for a player of Pant’s calibre.
The former India spinner also pointed out that Rishabh Pant’s aggressive batting should not be judged simply by his strike rate. Ashwin’s argument is that there is a significant difference between playing positively and repeatedly choosing options that carry unnecessary risk. For a batter with Pant’s experience, he believes those decisions need to be assessed according to the match situation.
Ashwin referred to Pant’s performances in Sydney and Brisbane as examples of his ability to produce quality knocks. However, he stressed that Test victories are rarely the result of one player’s contribution. “Rishabh played a class knock in Sydney and Brisbane, but you could not have won that match without Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur,” Ashwin said.
His wider message was about the importance of collective effort in Test cricket. India may have individual stars capable of producing spectacular performances, but winning a five-day game generally requires contributions across the playing XI. Ashwin emphasised that while it can take the combined effort of 11 players to win a Test, a single poor decision at a critical moment can put all that work at risk.
“It takes 11 cricketers to build a Test and win it in the last session of the game, but it takes only one moment of foolishness to lose a Test,” Ashwin said.
