After the nightclub incident in Derbyshire that saw Brydon Carse, England’s premier fast bowler, arrested with handcuffs. Joe Root, the current England Test captain, is really frustrated and described his reaction to being ‘hacked off.’ Root was agitated that his team keeps repeating mistakes off the field despite competing hard on the field. The 2nd Test commences from 27th August at Lord’s as Pakistan would be keen to square the series.
Joe Root frustrated with Brydon Carse incident
England is currently leading the three-match Test series against Pakistan with a big win at Leeds, but Brydon Carse was banned from playing the second Test after his arrest. The police on Monday confirmed that Carse was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and improper behaviour before letting him go.
The cricket regulator has been looking into the case since then. Root spoke to an upset Carse after the sour incident and had a detailed discussion with his players on Monday upon their arrival in London. Root said,
“If I am being brutally honest, I am really hacked off and disappointed that after last week’s performance, we sat here and we’re talking about something nothing related to it at all. In terms of the incident itself, it is obviously with the regulator. There is not a lot I can say on it. It is in their hands now. I have spoken to Brydon. When I first found out, my first concern was him as a person, as someone I have spent a lot of time with and who has been involved in this dressing-room.”
Root was also very disappointed that England keeps repeating off-field mistakes, which act as a major distraction from their cricket goals. Apart from this, Root stood against imposing a curfew within the team and pleaded with his players to behave like grown adults. He added,
“It’s not the isolated incident itself. It is the fact that we continually keep making stupid mistakes away from the game, and it is detracting from what we’re doing on the field. We must create something bigger than just a curfew and have something long-lasting that we can be proud of, that we can pass on to the next generation of players.”
Concerns for ECB & players
Joe Root has promised that the recent incident is a major learning for his players and the team, and it will certainly change the culture of the team under Stephen Fleming (*Stephen Fleming set to take charge in December 2026). Brydon Carse is the third English player after Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson to be involved in a drinking case, ultimately missing a Test match. An incident like this certainly affects the player’s reputation, but it also impacts a team’s morale and the results.
The second test between Pakistan starts tomorrow at Lord’s, and England will look to continue its on-field performance without being affected by this incident. England’s chance of qualifying for the WTC final this year is almost zero, with it placed seventh.
