Hasan Mahmud tore apart the Australian batting line-up with his six-wicket haul as Bangladesh ended the day on the ascendancy. Hasan Mahmud was impressive from the start and he was ably assisted by Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain as Bangladesh bowled Australia out for 198. This despite a fighting 71 from their best batter Steven Smith. In reply, Bangladesh have made a solid start and are 96/1 in 24 overs and now trail by 102 runs in their first innings with 9 wickets in hand.
Hasan Mahmud’s double strike early rattles Australia in the morning session
Winning the toss and deciding to bat first on a green top, Travis Head and Jake Weatherald opened the batting for Australia while Taskin Ahmed had the ball in hand for Bangladesh. Head began positively with a boundary with a drive through covers as the bowler bowled a no ball as well. Hasan Mahmud shared the attack from the other end and was greeted with a boundary by Weatherald who stood tall and steered it past gully for a boundary. Taskin bowled a quiet over.
Hasan was asking questions to the Aussie batters. Taskin gifted 4 byes as a gift to the batting side. Mahmud bowled another good over. Taskin bowled a decent over. Weatherald broke the shackles as he drove the ball back past the bowler for a boundary. Ebadot Hossain came into the attack next. Bangladesh wasted a review on Travis Head for LBW off Ebadot. Weatherald hit Hasan for a boundary drilling it square of the wicket. Australia were decently placed at 35/0 in 10 overs.
Ebadot continued as Weatherald got an inside edge past the stumps and away to the fence for a boundary. Head got into the act as he pulled the ball through midwicket for a boundary. Hasan Mahmud provided the breakthrough for Bangladesh as he removed Weatherald for 23 off 37 balls with 4 fours to his name with the ball moving away to get the outside edge to the keeper as Aussies’ score was 45-1 in 11.4 overs. Drinks were taken, after which Marnus Labuschagne came out to bat next. Ebadot continued and bowled a quiet over.
The 50 came up for Australia in 13.2 overs as Head hit Mahmud for a boundary through the covers. Mahmud had the last laugh though as he dismissed Head for 22 off 39 balls with 3 fours to his name as he chopped the ball onto the stumps as score was 52-2 in 13.4 overs. Steve Smith came out to bat next. Ebadot continued and bowled a maiden while almost dismissing Labuschagne. Taskin changed ends and kept it tight.
Then a big moment in the game came when Ebadot induced the outside edge of Smith and the ball went to third slip where Tanzid Hasan dropped a sitter. Smith was batting on 2* & Australia’s score was 55-2 in 16.2 overs. Taskin continued as Smith drove away from the body to get the outside edge and the ball went away to the third man fence for a boundary. Ebadot overstepped but soon got Labuschagne out for 1 off 20 balls with Shanto taking the catch at second slip.
Cameron Green came out to bat next. He got off the mark with a triple. Green got another triple as Australia reached 67/3 in 20 overs. Ebadot continued as Bangladesh wasted another DRS against Smith for caught behind. Taskin continued as Green took him on and launched the ball over backward square leg for the maximum. In the last ball before Lunch, Green fell to Taskin as he chipped the ball to the midwicket region where Mushfiqur Rahim took the catch.
Australia were 74/4 in 22 overs with Smith unbeaten on 7 off 25 balls and Alex Carey joining him as the players left the field for Lunch on Day 1.
Bangladesh chip away at the wickets to keep Australia on the back foot despite a valiant half-century from Steven Smith in the afternoon session
Steven Smith and Alex Carey came to resume proceedings after Lunch while Hasan Mahmud had ball in hand for Bangladesh. Mahmud bowled a good first over. Taskin Ahmed had the ball in hand from the other end. He bowled a maiden. Hasan Mahmud continued as Smith got the first boundary of the afternoon session with a slash past gully for a boundary. Taskin continued and bowled a probing over.
Hasan continued as Smith hit it behind square for a boundary to third man fence. Carey then thumped Taskin with a pull down the ground through midwicket and mid-on for a boundary. Carey managed to get a triple as well towards mid-on. Carey drove the ball down the ground for a boundary. Mehidy Hasan Miraz came into the attack as first signs of spin came into the proceedings. He bowled a good first over.
Smith then drove the ball hard behind square for a boundary past backward point as the 100 came up for Australia in 30.1 overs. Smith then gorgeously played it past backward point for a boundary. Mehidy continued as Carey got another triple away over mid-off. Ebadot returned and gave away 4 leg byes to the batting side. Taijul Islam came into the attack next. Smith took on Taijul and heaved it away over deep midwicket for the maximum. Webster then pressed forward and creamed it through the covers for a boundary. Taskin returned and knocked over Webster with a peach of a delivery as Webster fell for 12 off 10 balls with 2 fours to his name as Taskin got his 300th International wicket. Captain Pat Cummins came out to bat next and got off the mark as well.
Taijul continued as Smith reached his 45th Test fifty and held the fort for the Aussies. Taskin continued as bonus runs came Australia’s way via overthrows. Taijul bowled a quiet over. Taskin bowled a decent over as well. Taijul continued as Cummins cleared his front leg and pumped it over mid-on for a boundary. Mahmud returned to the attack and got rid of Cummins for 9 off 19 balls with an outside edge as Mahmud got his 100th international wicket. Mitchell Starc came out to bat next.

Taskin Ahmed had the ball in hand from the other end. He bowled a quiet over. Hasan then removed the big fish Smith for a well-made 71 off 109 balls with 7 fours and one six to his name as Mahmud completed a five-wicket haul. His 3rd five-wicket haul. Josh Hazlewood came out to bat next.
Lyon takes on Taskin as he pulled it past midwicket for a boundary. Hasan then completed his six-wicket haul as he dismissed Lyon for 7 off 13 balls with one four to his name as Australia were bowled out for 198 in 53 overs. Hazlewood was unbeaten on 4 off 7 balls with 16 extras given away by the fielding side.

Shadman Islam and Tanzid Hasan came out to open the batting for Bangladesh while Mitchell Starc had the ball in hand for Australia. Starc started with a maiden. Josh Hazlewood had the ball in hand from the other end. He gifted 4 leg byes to the batting side. Tanzid got a reprieve as Lyon dropped a sitter at cover point off Hazlewood. Starc continued as Islam managed to get a triple. Hazlewood bowled a probing over.
Starc continued as Islam square drove past backward point for a boundary. Shadman clipped it away past midwicket for a boundary. Tanzid got a triple down to square leg region. Hazlewood bowled another maiden over. Islam flicked it towards the midwicket region for a triple. Hazlewood continued as Tanzid stepped out and pumped it down the ground for a boundary past mid-on.
Starc continued as he removed Islam for 20 off 30 balls with 2 fours to his name as he provided the breakthrough for Australia. The visitors’ score was 36-1 in 8.2 overs. Mominul Haque came out to bat next. Cameron Green came into the attack next. Tanzid welcomed him with a boundary as he opened the bat face and drove it past the diving backward point for a boundary. Bangladesh reached 40/1 in 10 overs.
Captain Pat Cummins came into the attack. Cummins bowled a quiet over. Green bowled a maiden. Bangladesh were 41/1 in 12 overs when Drinks was taken. Cummins continued after the break as Tanzid drove it square of the wicket for a boundary. Green continued as Mominul pressed forward and drove it past mid-off for a boundary. Mominul slashed it away past gully and third slip for a boundary as the 50 came up for Bangladesh in 13.5 overs.
Cummins continued and bowled a good probing over. Nathan Lyon came into the attack next. Lyon bowled a decent first over. Cummins continued as Mominul ramped the ball up and over the keeper’s head for a boundary. Lyon continued as Mominul launched it down the ground past long-on for a boundary. Tanzid got a triple through midwicket.
Hazlewood came back into the attack and bowled a quiet over. Nathan Lyon continued as Mominul gets it past backward point for a boundary. Hazlewood continued as Mominul pressed forward and drove it past point for a boundary as the 50-run stand came up between Mominul and Tanzid. Hazlewood overstepped as well. Starc continued as Tanzid tickled it past fine leg for a boundary.
Hazlewood bowled a maiden over. Starc bowled the final over of the day and he overstepped as well. Bangladesh reached 96/1 in 24 overs with Tanzid unbeaten on 32 off 67 balls while Mominul was unbeaten on 35 off 49 balls. The players walked off the field at Stumps on Day 1.

What Lies Ahead on Day 2
Bangladesh are in command at the end of Day 1. The unbeaten batters Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque will continue from where they have left off and drive home the advantage. Australia needs early wickets to claw their way back into the contest. Let’s see what Day 2 has in-store for us.
