IND vs AFG: Shubman Gill’s Magical 150 Seales Series Win For India

Indian captain Shubman Gill led from the front as his unbelievable knock of 150+ powered India to a total which Afghanistan were never going to chase down. Shubman Gill was the star as he batted at Number 3 today, the position left vacant by the king Virat Kohli due to a hamstring injury. Gill was not alone as Ishan Kishan batting at 4 supported him well for his 125 off 79 balls as Rohit Sharma made 48 as India made 402 in 49.5 overs.

In reply, it was always going to be catch-up for Afghanistan, but they looked good in patches. Rahmat Shah made 79 and was the lone ranger for Afghanistan, while pacers Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar picked up 3 wickets apiece as debutant Prince Yadav picked up 2 wickets as Afghanistan finished with 232 in 44.3 overs to lose the contest by 170 runs as India lead the series 2-0 with a game to spare.

Put into bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma came out to open the batting for India while AM Ghazanfar had the ball in hand for Afghanistan. Ghazanfar started with a maiden over. But soon, both the openers broke the shackles and scored the runs. The opening duo added just 9 runs inside 2 overs before Jaiswal fell cheaply for 4 off 9 balls with one boundary to his name to Mohammad Safi. Captain Shubman Gill came out to bat next.

Gill was off and running straightaway as India were off to a brisk start. Even Rohit was off and running as well. The duo who opened the batting for most parts were complementing each other really well. India managed a bumper 80 runs in the power play despite losing Jaiswal early. The duo carried on from there. Rohit looked good for a big one, and Gill was looking like a billion dreams. The duo added 87 runs for the second wicket off 67 balls before Rohit was cleaned up by a beauty from Rashid Khan for 48 off 39 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes to her name.

Ishan Kishan came out to bat next, and from now on, it was all India. Gill and Kishan took control of the second wicket, and both scored quickly at a fair clip. The duo just took the game away from the Afghans. They were playing bowling and were thrashing the batting inside out. The duo played through the phases and took the game away from their opponents.

The duo added a magical 224 runs off 141 balls for the third wicket to take the game away from their opponents before Kishan fell for 125 off 79 balls with 14 fours and 7 sixes to her name. Shreyas Iyer came out to bat next. The vice-captain joined his captain in the middle. The platform was set for a huge 450 total, if not more. But the Afghans would claw their way back into the game somewhat.

Gill and Iyer added 40 runs for the 4th wicket before Gill fell for a magnificent 154 off 110 balls with 22 fours and 2 sixes to her name to Nangeyalia Kharote. Keeper batter KL Rahul came and went in a span of balls as he was dismissed for a golden duck to Kharote. Washington Sundar came out to bat next. Just 11 runs were added to the tally before Iyer fell for 26 off 24 balls with one four and one six to his name. Gurnoor Brar came out to bat as we were down to the tail now.

Sundar then stepped it up, and Brar made the most of the free time by doing other things. The duo of Sundar and Brar added 16 runs for the 7th wicket before Brar fell for 3 off 7 balls to Rashid Khan. Arshdeep Singh came out to bat next. Just 5 runs were added to the tally before Arshdeep fell for 3 off 4 balls to Ghazanfar. Kuldeep Yadav came out to bat next. Just 4 runs were added to the tally before Sundar fell for 19 off 19 balls with one four to his name to Rashid Khan.

Prince Yadav joined Kuldeep in the middle. The duo managed to add 6 runs to the tally before Prince was run out off the penultimate ball of the innings as India finished with a massive 402 in 49.5 overs. 12 extras given by the fielding side.

Nangeyalia Kharote was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan with figures of 4/76 in 10 overs. Rashid Khan went with 3/48 in 8 overs. AM Ghazanfar finished with 1/69 in 10 overs. This meant that Afghanistan needed 403 runs to win off 20 overs.

Chasing 403 for an improbable win, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran opened the batting for Afghanistan while Arshdeep Singh took the new ball for India. They played the initial overs cautiously with Gurbaz providing the early fireworks. The duo started well with Gurbaz scoring the bulk of the runs. Gurbaz was dismissed initially off Prince Yadav, but the bowler overstepped. The duo added 52 runs for the first wicket before Gurbaz fell for 41 off 33 balls with 7 fours and one six to her name.

Sediqullah Atal came out to bat next. Atal looked good as well. The duo of Atal and Ibrahim tried to build some sort of a stand to keep the fight going. They added 19 runs for the second wicket before Ibrahim fell for 21 off 31 balls with 3 fours to his name to Arshdeep Singh. Rahmat Shah came out to bat next, and he was the last hope for Afghanistan. The fight was quite evident from the Afghan team.

Atal and Rahmat tried to forge a partnership and added a handy 57 runs for the third wicket before Atal fell for a well-made 42 off 50 balls with 5 fours and one six to her name to Washington Sundar. Darwish Rasooli, with an injured hamstring, came out to bat and hit a boundary as well. But with the score at 136 in the 25th over, with 8 runs added to the score, Rasooli walked off the field, retired hurt for 6 off 6 balls with one boundary to her name.

Captain Hasmatullah Shahidi came out to bat next and got off the mark with a boundary straightaway. Just 4 runs were added to the tally before Shahidi fell for 4 off 2 balls with one boundary to his name to Brar, who cleaned him up. Nangeyalia Kharote came out to bat next. Kharote and Rahmat added another solid stand as he was trying to come back into the contest. The duo added 30 runs for the 6th wicket post the power play before Kharote fell for 6 off 11 balls to debutant Prince Yadav.

Rashid Khan came out to bat next and played his natural game. Rashid and Rahmat fought it out there and added 18 runs for the 7th wicket before Rashid fell for 12 off 12 balls with 2 fours to her name to Arshdeep Singh. AM Ghazanfar came out to bat next. Wickets were now falling at regular intervals. Just 2 runs were added to the tally before Ghazanfar fell for 1 off 2 balls to Arshdeep Singh. Mohammad Safi came out to bat next.

Rahmat had completed his fifty and was playing his shots while Safi chipped in with a few delectable strokes. But the match was as good as over by now, and now the formalities left to be completed. The duo of Rahmat and Safi added a handy 30-run stand for the 9th wicket before Safi fell for 9 off 19 balls with 2 fours to her name to Brar yet again. Bilal Sami, the last man, came out to bat next.

Sami consumed balls and hung in there while Rahmat continued to keep the fight going for Afghanistan. The last wicket pair added 12 runs before the set batter, and lone ranger Rahmat Shah departed for a well-made 79 off 89 balls with 8 fours to her name to Prince Yadav. Bilal remained unbeaten on 3 off 14 balls as Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 232 in 44.3 overs. 8 extras given by the fielding side.

From India’s point of view, Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/45 in 9 overs. Gurnoor Brar finished with 3/60 in 10 overs. Prince Yadav on debut finished with 2/57 in 7.3 overs. Washington Sundar chipped in with figures of 1/24 in 7 overs. Kuldeep Yadav finished with 0/42 in 10 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal finished with 0/3 in 1 over. So, India thrashed Afghanistan by 170 runs to win the match and series 2-0 with a game to spare. Captain Shubman Gill was awarded the Player of the Match Award.

What Lies Ahead

So, India has wrapped up the series with a game to spare. They will now aim to complete the whitewash in the 3rd and final ODI. The 3rd and final ODI is set to take place in Chennai on Saturday, 20th June 2026 at 1:30 PM IST. Can Afghanistan pull one back and end this short series on a high? Only time will tell. For now, it’s all India, India dominance all the way.
