BAN vs PAK: Pakistan Docked 8 WTC Points For Slow Over Rate

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Pakistan Cricket Team. After suffering a heavy defeat in the first Test at Mirpur, Dhaka, the tourists were found to be extremely slow on the over rate. As a result, Pakistan have been fined 40% of their match fees but most importantly docked 8 points in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle after being ruled 8 overs short of the target once time allowances were taken into consideration.

With this sanction, Pakistan have been reduced to 4 points in the latest WTC standings, placing them at 8th place just above the West Indies with a percentage now of 11.1%. For the record, Bangladesh sealed the first Test with a stunning final day bowling show as they won the contest by 104 runs thanks mainly to Pakistan’s nemesis Nahid Rana’s impeccable 5-wicket haul.

ICC Sanctions Imposed on Pakistan

The sanction was imposed by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time.

As per Article 16.11.2 of the World Test Championship playing conditions, teams lose one championship point for each over short, resulting in Pakistan being docked 8 crucial points in the WTC standings. Pakistan captain Shan Masood admitted the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

For the record, the charge was levelled by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Kumar Dharmasena, alongside third umpire Allahuddien Palekar and fourth umpire Gazi Sohel.

Implications of the penalty for Pakistan in the WTC race

This slow over-rate sanction will have huge ramifications and comes as a big blow to Pakistan for their aspirations in the WTC cycle 2025-27. It’s still early stages for them as this is the second series they are playing with 4 more series to come after this. But the road ahead will be steep as they will now have to play catch-up cricket for the rest of the cycle, and the fixtures ain’t going to be easy.

Pakistan started the cycle with a 1-1 drawn series at home against South Africa, where they won the first Test match and lost the second Test match. Now, they have just lost the first Test against Bangladesh. Ahead of the series, the Men in Green were in 5th place ahead of India, while Bangladesh were in 8th place, as the Tigers too had played one series, a 0-1 loss to Sri Lanka in 2 matches.

But one loss and, more importantly, the over-rate issue have made things a little complicated for Pakistan. Pakistan, after losing to Bangladesh, had slipped to 7th position and had 12 points in their kitty with a decent percentage, which placed them ahead of England. But now with this deduction, the percentage plummeted to 11.1% and has 4 points to their name. They have slipped below England and are now in 8th place, just ahead of the West Indies.

Pakistan now have to win the 2nd and final Test of the series against Bangladesh to level the series and climb up the ladder and make sure that the overs are bowled on time. But things are not going to be easy for Pakistan even if they manage to beat Bangladesh in Sylhet. After this series, Pakistan are scheduled to tour England in the English summer for 3 Test matches. There is no guarantee they will do well there, as England in England is a formidable team under the Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum regime.

England will be up for it in the home summer as they have New Zealand and Pakistan and will want to win both series easily to climb up themselves. So, the road ahead for Pakistan is tough. At this stage, it looks difficult for them to even compete for a top 2 finish and a place in the finals for the 2027 final. But miracles do happen in sport, and Pakistan has to start this turnaround with a win over Bangladesh first. Bangladesh now have beaten Pakistan in 3 consecutive Test matches, 2 in Pakistan and now 1 in Bangladesh.

Let’s see how Pakistan go about their business in the remaining WTC matches, starting with the clash against Bangladesh in Sylhet from 16th May onwards.
