The joint most successful team in history of Indian Premier League (IPL) Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are about to make their presence felt in IPL 2026. CSK alongside MI are the two most decorated sides in IPL history winning 5 titles each. For the record, CSK has been in playoffs for 12 times and 10 times they have reached the finals. So, if consistency needs a name, CSK epitomises that.
But lately, CSK has not done well as in 2024 they missed the playoffs by a whisker while in 2025 they finished at the bottom of the table, the wooden spoon holders. CSK will be led by Ruturaj Gaikwad while they have got Sanju Samson in their ranks. MS Dhoni is back again and they have put their money on youngsters and for them to do well. Here, we will talk about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of CSK.
Strengths
- Strong leadership transition: Ruturaj Gaikwad takes over as captain which ensures continuity with a modern approach. Guidance from MS Dhoni even if it is as impact player remains invaluable for decision-making and finishing phases.
- Explosive and upgraded batting unit: The arrival of Sanju Samson adds firepower and intent at the top or middle order. Players like Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube provides aggressive middle-order options. Multiple wicket-keepers batters like Samson, Dhoni and Kartik Sharma offers flexibility.
- Strong spin depth (CSK trademark): Handy options like Rahul Chahar, Noor Ahmad, Shreyas Gopal and Akeal Hosein strengthens the team. They are perfectly suited for Chepauk conditions.
- Balanced all-rounder core: Matthew Short, Jamie Overton, and Dube provides batting depth plus handy bowling options.
WeaknessesÂ
- Loss of core match-winners: Departure of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran weakens the balance and experience of CSK.
- Inexperienced Indian pace attack: Reliance on relatively inexperienced names like Mukesh Choudhary, Anshul Kamboj. Add to that, the lack of a proven Indian death bowler could hurt CSK.
- Overdependence on top-order: Heavy reliance on Gaikwad and Samson for consistent starts. The middle order is still slightly inconsistent with Brevis and Sarfaraz Khan being in the mix.
- Transition phase uncertainty: The shift from Dhoni era core to a new generation may take time to stabilize.
Opportunities
- Fresh team identity: The new core around Gaikwad and Samson can redefine CSK’s playing style which means more aggressive batting.
- Breakout potential of young stars: Players like Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer who are record uncapped buys could become X-factors.
- Tactical flexibility: Multiple all-rounders and keepers allows dynamic playing XIs and impact-sub usage.
- Home advantage at Chepauk: Spin-heavy squad aligns perfectly with slow Chennai pitches.
Threats
- Recent poor form: CSK finished bottom in IPL 2025 that was the first time in history which indicates deeper issues.
- Over-reliance on aging legend: Even in a reduced role, dependence on Dhoni in crunch moments could be really risky for CSK.
- Stronger competition: Teams like MI, GT, RR have more settled cores and stronger pace attacks than CSK.
- Lack of elite death bowling: Overseas pacers like Matt Henry need to deliver consistently. Otherwise, the death bowling remains a concern for CSK with Nathan Ellis now ruled out as well.

Predicted Performance of CSK in IPL 2026Â
CSK are banking on youngsters to perform and help them. It comes with its risk as well. CSK if everything clicks can make it to the playoffs as they always find a way out of things. Having said that, the team can falter under pressure in this transition phase. So, we feel CSK not making the playoffs could be a reality for all we know. Chennai will be hoping they make the top 4. The road ahead won’t be easy at all.
Let’s see how they perform when they begin their campaign on 30th March, 2026 against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. The IPL starts on 28th March, 2026 and we are just days away from starting it.
