After finishing runners-up in IPL 2025, PBKS will aim to go one better this time around when they take the field for the 19th edition of the toughest T20 League in the world. Punjab Kings (PBKS) under Shreyas Iyer did really well last season and was one of the teams to watch out for last season. This year, they have kept the nucleus of the side more or less the same with a few additions and subtractions.
Here, we will try and analyse Punjab Kings’ strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The Kings have reached two finals so far, but are yet to win silverware. Could this be their year, only time will tell.
Strengths
- Strong Indian batting core: Punjab Kings’ biggest asset is their young but productive Indian batting line-up featuring Shreyas Iyer, Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Shashank Singh, and Nehal Wadhera. Multiple players scored consistently last season, giving stability and finishing power to the side. The right-left combinations added tactical flexibility.
- Explosive all-round depth: Players like Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen and Azmatullah Omarzai provides balance to the Punjab Kings. They contribute in both departments which gives Punjab Kings flexibility in team combinations.
- Squad depth and Bench Strength: Punjab Kings are not overly dependent on a few starts. They have quality back-ups across the different roles. This in turn, allows rotation without weakening the XI if there is need of those things in the tournament.
- Quality Indian bowling core: Arshdeep Singh leads the pace attack for the Punjab Kings. While they have handy spin options like Yuzvendra Chahal and Harpreet Brar that adds variety. All of them will have a point to prove and will want to have a bumper IPL season for different reasons and more reasons than one.
WeaknessesÂ
- Inexperienced Indian core under pressure: Many Indian players apart from Shreyas Iyer, lacks big match experience. This could lead to inconsistency in crunch situation which may go onto hurt the Punjab Kings going ahead.
- Over-reliance on young batters: While being really talented, players like Arya and Wadhera are still developing. A dip in form could expose the middle order which may make the going tough for the Punjab Kings.
- Death Bowling inconsistency: Despite Arshdeep’s presence, support options have been inconsistent at times. Injuries to key pacers can worsen this and make things challenging for the Punjab Kings. The back-up bowlers may not be able to stand up and support Arshdeep.
- Home Record concerns: Punjab Kings have had a poor record at their home venue i.e. Mullanpur last season. The struggles in chasing totals remain an issue for them which they have to work on in this tournament.
OpportunitiesÂ
- First IPL title push: After finishing as finalists in IPL 2025, the momentum is strong and confidence is at an all time sky high for the Punjab Kings. This could be their best chance to win their maiden IPL title.
- Rise of young Indian stars: Players like Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh can become elite T20 players. They can have breakthrough seasons and then enhance their names possibly for India selections later on.
- Leadership of Shreyas Iyer: Shreyas Iyer has proven leadership credentials and recent success. He is someone who can bring consistency and calmness in big games for the Punjab Kings. He will once again be the key to success.
- Emerging Indian pacers: Bowlers like Yash Thakur have a chance to establish themselves at the top level. It is an opportunity for emerging Indian pacers to shine and get recognised on the world stage.
Threats
- Injury Concerns: Players like Lockie Ferguson are injury-prone. In fact, earlier today, Ferguson pulled out of the first half of IPL in order to spend time with family. Losing key overseas players could potentially disrupt the balance of the side.
- Pressure of Expectations: After a strong 2025 season, expectations are significantly higher from the fans and experts alike. Handling the pressure will be crucial. If they are unable to do so, then they might struggle big time.
- Overseas player availability and form: Punjab Kings relies heavily on overseas all-rounders. Poor form or unavailability of these players could hurt the team balance in a big way and that may jeopardise their tournament.
- Competition from stronger squads: Teams like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have more experienced cores in knockout situations. These may turn out to be a bane for the Punjab Kings going forward. Other teams are equally strong and the margin in IPL is nil to negligible.

Predicted Performance from Punjab KingsÂ
Punjab Kings has more or less the same squad from last season. They almost went the distance but fell at the last hurdle.
