It’s the final day of Super 8 games in ICC T20 World Cup 2026 as we have a double header to complete this stage. Group 2 is done and dusted in Sri Lanka. Group 1 will play their last fixtures today and while all the focus is on the second game of the day, South Africa will take centre stage in New Delhi when they face their neighbours Zimbabwe in the first game of the day. A game which has no consequence for qualification point of view but important as winning games is always important.
South Africa are already through to the semis with crushing wins over India and West Indies and will aim to stay unbeaten going into the semis as they are the only unbeaten side left in the tournament. They are facing Zimbabwe who are already eliminated as they suffered heavy defeats to West Indies and India conceding 250+ scores in each of those games bowling first. They also want to end on a high. Two contrasting teams, both wanting a win could produce an interesting game of cricket.
Overview.Â
The stage is set for a battle of neighbours as the team on rampage South Africa lock horns against the team wounded Zimbabwe in the first game of the day at the nation’s capital in New Delhi as Arun Jaitley Stadium gets to welcome these two teams in action. It’s an afternoon game and so the conditions will be hot for both sides as both come into this clash with contrasting fortunes for them.
The Proteas have already qualified for the semi-finals and are yet to drop a game in this edition. In fact, they lost only match in the last two World Cups, including this edition, and that was against India in the final in Barbados. The Aiden Markram-led side has been a unit on a mission this time around. It is not looking like it is stopping without the glory. However, playing a number of games at the same venue Ahmedabad has helped South Africa to settle into a nice combination.
If one sees every South African player who is part of this squad, their eyes speak intensity. The way they played against India in their first game of the Super 8 showed that they are here for the ultimate goal. The bowling attack consisting of Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj has delivered the goods in Ahmedabad. Rabada hasn’t been at his brutal best, but he has managed to get back in form against the Windies. Jansen and Maharaj leaked runs against the West Indies, but the rest of the bowling attack had already closed out the game. Ngidi is in unbelievable form and Bosch has nailed his plan to perfection.
When the top order hasn’t fired, the middle order has taken care of the runs, while skipper Aiden Markram has been leading from the front. Markram made a mockery of the run chase against the Windies, hitting glorious strokes and scoring 82 runs off just 46 balls. He also notched up 277 runs in this World Cup. Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton have just found their touch back in the tournament. They are yet to lose a T20I against Zimbabwe, who are not in a great position either. Zimbabwe punched above their weight to qualify for the Super 8s by beating the likes of Australia and Sri Lanka comfortably in the group stage.
Zimbabwe were on cloud nine but were brought back to Earth by the West Indies and India. The Chevrons had no clue about the onslaught from the Windies and India. Their bowling was taken to the cleaners, with both the Men in Maroon and the Men in Blue hammering them for more than 250 runs in successive games. The batting hasn’t been at its best after the group phase. Only Brian Bennett is looking in unreal form, having scored 277 runs in 5 innings and having been dismissed only once. He is coming off a superb knock against India, remaining unbeaten on 97 off 59 balls.
The likes of Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, skipper Sikandar Raza and Richard Ngarava need to be on their toes and perform much, much better with the ball against the high flying Proteas. And also, their batting order needs to support Bennett to give any fight to their neighbours. There is a possibility that Ben Curran and Graeme Cremer get into the playing XI, while South Africa might give the rest of the guys on the bench a game time.
The stage is set and it remains to be seen whether South Africa continue their unbeaten run or whether Zimbabwe end their campaign on a high with an upset win.
Head-To-Head.Â
The Head-To-Head between South Africa and Zimbabwe in T20Is is that they have played against each other 8 times with South Africa winning 7 of them and one match ended in a No Result. Zimbabwe are yet to beat South Africa in this format. The teams met in July 2025 in the Tri-series in Zimbabwe and South Africa have dominated them even with an inexperienced side.
Pitch & Weather Report. Â
The pitch at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi is expected to be balanced, batting friendly surface especially when the ball is new during the powerplay. However, as the game progresses, the track may slow down a bit. It’s a day game and we will have no dew factor making the toss factor not that huge.
The weather in New Delhi looks favourable with temperatures in the day hovering around 31 degrees Celsius during match day. It is expected to go down to 24 degrees at night. But the weather shall remain clear with no probability of rain and we will get a full game in.
Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both teams.Â
Here, we will try and predict the probable playing XIs of both teams.
South Africa XI: Aiden Markram (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, David Miller/Jason Smith, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen/Kwena Maphaka, Corbin Bosch, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj/George Linde, Lungi Ngidi/Anrich Nortje.
Zimbabwe XI: Tadiwanashe Marumani (wk), Brian Bennett, Dion Myers/Ben Curran, Ryan Burl, Sikandar Raza (c), Tony Munyonga, Tashinga Musekiwa, Brad Evans, Graeme Cremer, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash.Â
Aiden Markram: The man in form and leading from the front Aiden Markram has been special in this tournament. He has rediscovered his form playing proper cricket and showed how it’s done. He has fired in all cylinders and would like to keep that form into the semi-finals. He has made things easier for the Quinton and Ryan who bats alongside him.
Kagiso Rabada: Kagiso Rabada was blowing cold throughout the tournament. But in the last game against West Indies, he roared back into form and picked up wickets to destabilise West Indies. When the Men in Maroon got off to a rampaging start in the first 2 overs, it was Rabada with his double strike that derailed them. Rabada will want to carry on this good form and build momentum ahead of the semi-final clash next week.
Brian Bennett: The find of the tournament has been Brian Bennett. He has been the backbone for Zimbabwe and was not dismissed in Sri Lanka matches. After coming to India in Super 8s, he had a rare failure against West Indies but was back into his elements by carrying his bat against India scoring unbeaten 97 runs. He is the glue and rock on which Zimbabwe plays around him and once again will be key against the mighty Proteas.
Blessing Muzarabani: The best bowler for Zimbabwe by a distance, Blessing Muzarabani has been in red hot form. While he did well in Sri Lanka, he has been expensive after coming to the Group stage as the pitches have been flat. Still, he is the leader of the pace attack and much will depend on him and his height to challenge the top order of South Africa so that the Chevrons can end the campaign on a high.
Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match.Â
Well, we know in T20 cricket, it is difficult to pick a winner as any side can beat another on a given day. But looking at this match-up and form on paper and everything, it is safe to say South Africa starts as overwhelming favourites and win this game to make it 3 out of 3 and qualify for the semis as Group 1 winners. It will take a miracle from Zimbabwe to cause an upset. One will hope that we have a good competitive game as Zimbabwe fights till the end, but South Africa to win is the obvious prediction.
So, let’s see how this game goes and on a double header Sunday, this is the appetizer and the main dish is yet to come in the evening game. Here’s hoping for a good game of cricket today in New Delhi.
