In the day’s second game which also features teams from Group 1, we will have co-hosts India in a must-win situation against the underdogs Zimbabwe who were beaten in the first game as well. Both the teams in action lost their first games in convincing fashion and needs to win and win well to improve their Net Run Rate while eyes will be on the afternoon game in Ahmedabad between South Africa and West Indies.
India the big favourites for many experts were exposed badly by South Africa and have a lot of concerns and they face-off with Zimbabwe who did well and impressed one and all in the Group Stage in Sri Lanka but found the going tough and understandably so in different climate and conditions in India. The truth be told, India will be under much more pressure against the Chevrons as Zimbabwe has nothing to lose in this clash. Chennai is ready to welcome both sides in this evening extravaganza.
Overview
The stage is set for two winless teams to take centre stage in Chennai as co-hosts and defending champions India faces underdogs Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Both teams need a win and if possible big to improve their Net Run Rate after heavy losses in opening encounters. All eyes will be on afternoon game and depending on the result of the SA-WI game in Ahmedabad, both teams will take the field according to the equation for either teams.
Nobody would have thought that India’s tournament would hang by a thread in the Super 8s. The Indians dominated this format ahead of the World Cup, but something has gone amiss in this tournament. The defending champions have a strong long batting line-up but it just hasn’t come to the party whatsoever.
There have been a couple of instances of individual brilliance saving them from bigger upsets in the group stage. Having said that, none of it turned up when it mattered the most. The history is that no one has hosted a tournament and become a champion, and no one has successfully defended the T20 WC title.
India were on the receiving end of a 76-run hammering against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium and that one defeat has landed India in deep waters. But these defeats in Ahmedabad is a curse for India. In 2023, India were on a great run, but stumbled in the final on the final hurdle and now again on a big night, they stumbled again getting a massive wake-up call if ever there was one.
Suryakumar Yadav saved the day against the USA. Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya were too hot to handle for Namibia. Kishan was again at it against Pakistan. Shivam Dube did the job against the Netherlands. The bowling was superb across all Group A matches, marching into the Super 8s unbeaten.
But the rest of the batting line-up flattered to deceive. Abhishek Sharma literally struggle to buy a run as he started the tournament with three ducks in three innings. He missed one game against Namibia due to illness. He did finally manage to open his account against South Africa, but it was either hit or miss from the southpaw.
He scored 15. but didn’t look settled. No big performances from Tilak Varma either. He has looked a shadow of himself in this marquee event. Even Kishan took the strike against the Proteas, with Abhishek struggling to start against off-spin. As expected, South Africa began with skipper Aiden Markram and this time it was Ishan’s turn to get out for a duck. The top order misfired big time, and unlike the associate teams, South Africa had a world class bowling attack and they did their homework and never allowed India to come back.
Dube tried his bit but managed to take the team’s score past the 100-run mark and eventually India failed to bat the full 20 overs. Getting all out for 111 inside 19 overs chasing 188 only disturbed their Net Run Rate which took a beating, and it stands at -3.800. The bowling was good to start with. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a world-class spell. Arshdeep Singh did what he does best.
India had South Africa on the mat at 20/3, but they allowed the likes of David Miller, Tristan Stubbs to lead the recovery and finish well. Varun Chakaravarthy had a rare off day. Dube, Washington Sundar and Pandya didn’t have much to show with the ball either as they were all taken to the cleaners, not backing up the dream spells from Bumrah and Arshdeep.
On the other hand, Zimbabwe punched above their weight, dominating the likes of Australia and Sri Lanka in Group B. After achieving one of their goals of making it into the Super 8s, the Sikandar Raza led unit started focussing on the ultimate goal, but it had very little clue about what was about to come. The Chevrons lean massively on Brian Bennett, Raza, Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans and Richard Ngarava to do the bulk of the job. The fast bowling trio was on the money to start with, but with Tashinga Musekiwa dropping Shimron Hetmyer proved very costly for Zimbabwe, who were blown away by the Caribbean power hitting, conceding a monumental 254.
Raza was sent on a journey, which didn’t help their cause either. Experienced Graeme Cremer was superb with the ball, but he couldn’t do much without support from the rest of the attack. Bennett was never dismissed in this World Cup until Akeal Hosein knocked him over. It was always a mountain to climb for the Chevrons, and if not for Evans’ lusty cameo down the order, they would have gone down by a huge, huge margin, though a 107-run defeat is still massive. Their Net Run Rate got damaged, and it is -5.350.
This is the first time that Zimbabwe are going to play India in a T20I fixture in India. They are also taking on India in India for the first time since 2002. The stage is set then and it remains to be seen whether India bounces back and makes a statement against Zimbabwe to keep their tournament alive or will Zimbabwe upset the mighty Indians.
Head-To-HeadÂ
India and Zimbabwe have played against each other in 13 T20Is with India winning 10 off them and Zimbabwe 3. In the last 10 matches, it is 7-3 to Zimbabwe with the Men in Blue winning the last 3 clashes in Zimbabwe in 2024 July. They met in the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup and India won that too. So, odds favour India but the Chevrons cannot be taken lightly at all.
Pitch & Weather ReportÂ
The pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium has changed over the years. Once known for its slower tracks and helping spinners, it now offers better bounce and assist batters more than bowlers. Scores between 180 and 200 has been common at this venue in this tournament while the other stadiums have struggled for runs. It has been the best best batting ground in this T20 World Cup. The India and Zimbabwe match is expected to see a black soil surface being used.
According to the forecast, the conditions are expected to be clear in Chennai today, with temperatures around 31-32 degrees Celsius during the day and dropping to 27 degrees in the evening. There is no threat of rain in the city, which means a full match is expected without any interruptions.
Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both sidesÂ
Here, we will try and predict the playing XIs of both sides.
India XI: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan (wk), Suryakumar Yadav (c), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh/Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh/Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy.
Zimbabwe XI: Brian Bennett, Tadiwanashe Marumani (wk), Ryan Burl, Sikandar Raza (c), Tashinga Musekiwa, Tony Munyonga, Dion Myers, Brad Evans, Graeme Cremer, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash
Ishan Kishan: India will want Ishan Kishan to fire in this must-win clash. With Abhishek Sharma woefully out of form, Ishan needs to get back to scoring runs as that can help India post a big total or chase down the total quickly. With others searching for form, Ishan remains the form batter and would like to do well in this game.
Jasprit Bumrah: India’s premier fast bowler showed his class in Ahmedabad when everyone went for runs. India will be hoping Bumrah again shows his prowess and class and performs with the ball and trouble Zimbabwe. India cannot afford to have Bumrah having an off-day and want his services fully to do well and stay in the competition.
Brian Bennett: Brian Bennett might have missed out against West Indies in Mumbai, but he is the most dependable player for Zimbabwe at the top as he holds the innings together. Brian Bennett is the rock that Zimbabwe relies on and much will depend on him to give the team a solid start. If Zimbabwe are to challenge India, Bennett will have to score a significant score and hold one end up for others to bat around him.
Blessing Muzarabani: Blessing has been Zimbabwe’s best bowler in the competition. He has picked up wickets for fun and kept the runs down as well. He has bowled well in all phases of the game. Yes, against West Indies he was hit but he is the best bowler and most reliable for Zimbabwe. With his tall height, he can get extra bounce and trouble the Indian batting who haven’t fired yet at all. So, he is going to be a big threat for India.
Key Stats and Records to look forward to ahead of this clashÂ
- Of all Full Member bowlers, Bumrah and Ngarava have bowled the joint most maidens in T20I history: 12 each.
- Raza is 15 runs away from becoming the first Zimbabwe batter to reach 3000 in T20Is, while Ryan Burl is 57 runs away from 2000.
- Raza and Hardik Pandya are among a select group of five all-rounders with 2000 runs and 100 wickets in T20Is. Malaysia’s Virandeep Singh is the only one in the 3000 runs and 100 wicket club.
- These two teams have met only once before in T20 World Cups, at the MCG in 2022, when Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 25-ball 61 led India to a 71-run win.
- Zimbabwe have never played a T20I against India in India. The last of their 24 international meetings in India i.e. 5 Tests and 19 ODIs was an ODI match in 2002.
Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match
All eyes will be on the Ahmedabad game initially as that will decide the enormity of this game. Looking at this game, we can say that given everything with regards to form and paper, India are favourites to win this and should get there barring a mishap. But Zimbabwe have shown they can be giant killers and will have nothing to lose in Chennai for sure. So, it’s going to be a good game.
We are going to favour India and see the Men in Blue win tonight and keep their slim hopes of semi-finals alive. Can Zimbabwe cause a shock? Only time will tell.
