Time for Group 1 to take centre stage on Thursday in ICC T20 World Cup 2026 as we have a double header to get through. In the day’s first game, we have a heavyweight battle as two unbeaten teams in South Africa and West Indies clash at the gigantic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad with match set to start at 3 PM IST. Both teams have been unbeaten from the start topping their respective groups and now separated by only Net Run Rate.
Both South Africa and West Indies are on a mission to dominate and both wants the ultimate prize but for one their unbeaten run shall end today. South Africa were pushed by Afghanistan while West Indies haven’t been pushed yet. Both the teams look good and should qualify for the semis leaving hosts India behind. But one team will go down tonight and India will be hoping and forced also to root for the Proteas to win so that things become a tad easier for them provided they beat Zimbabwe in the evening game in Chennai.
So, the stage is set for a heavyweight battle and there is absolutely nothing to choose between the teams and it’s an afternoon game meaning dew won’t be a factor here at all. South Africa will have knowledge of Ahmedabad than West Indies which could be an advantage for them.
Overview
The stage is set for a potential blockbuster clash in Ahmedabad as South Africa and West Indies clash with the winner set to book a place in the semi-finals while all won’t be lost for the loser, but it will come down to the final day of action on Sunday. The clash will be epic as the whole world will be watching this clash and so will India who have no choice to support South Africa the same team that humbled them on Sunday as this is their only chance and best bet to remain in competition should they first beat Zimbabwe in the evening.
South Africa have a lot of experience playing at this venue, having played and won four matches in Ahmedabad. The team combination has been perfect for this venue, and it appears to be a very settled XI. On the other hand, the two-time champions are playing their first game at this venue in this marquee event. They might take a bit of time to adapt and settle down to this condition. Recently, the Proteas won 2-1 in a three-match T20I series against the Shai Hope led side back in South Africa, although it counts for nothing.
South Africa are coming off an unbelievable victory against none other than India. A 76-run scintillating win not only saw the Ahmedabad crowd go silent yet again, but also lifted their net run rate to +3.800. Batting first, South Africa’s in-form top order was sent packing inside 4 overs for 20 runs. David Miller and Dewald Brevis counter-attacked, adding 97 for the fourth wicket. The former hit them as clean as a whistle and notched up a special half-century, while the latter teed off late but hit a valuable 45. Tristan Stubbs then cut loose in the death overs, propelling them to 187/7.
The Proteas then trusted the match-ups. Aiden Markram, with his off-spin, sent back the dangerous Ishan Kishan for a duck in the first over. South Africa never allowed India to breathe. Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj varied lengths, pace and lines to perfection, shutting all possible doors for the hosts. Ngidi was superb with his slower ones, while Rabada was good in patches. Jansen snapped four wickets, while Maharaj took three in one over. Bosch did his bit as well, and a collective bowling display saw them bundle India out for just 111.
The Men in Maroon will be slightly worried about Brandon King’s poor run of form that continued against Zimbabwe as well. Shai Hope looked positive and good during his little stay in the middle. Despite a poor start, the West Indies cruised to 254/6 the second highest total in the T20 WC history on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium.
Shimron Hetmyer made merry of his two dropped chances and hit the fastest half century by a West Indian in the T20 World Cups, hammering 85 in just 34 balls. Rovman Powell found form and also slammed a fifty. The power hitting all-rounders did what they do best, while Sherfane Rutherford continued his purple patch with outstanding stroke-play.
Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie have been unplayable and were too hot to handle for the Chevrons, with both the left-arm spinners sharing 7 wickets. They will be key yet again, although South Africa have a few dangerous left-handed batters as a match-up might favour Chase’s selection. Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph and Jason Holder have bowled decent enough in this competition. That 107-run win against Zimbabwe not only gave the West Indies two points but also took their Net Run Rate to unreal +5.350.
Since, this is an afternoon game, there could be a little tendency to bring an extra spinner in Roston Chase for West Indies and George Linde for South Africa but it won’t be a surprise to many if both teams stick to their winning combination and formula. The stage is set as two teams are in red-hot form going head-to-head and it will be nothing but a guaranteed feast. It remains to be seen which team blinks first and holds their nerve to book their place in the semi-finals.
Head-To-Head
West Indies and South Africa have played against each other in 29 fixtures with West Indies winning 15 of them and South Africa 14. It is 7-3 to the West Indies in last 10 matches including the last match which was reduced to 10 overs a side. But South Africa won the first two matches of the series. In World Cups, it is 4-1 in South Africa’s favour. So, there is nothing to choose between the two sides.
Pitch & Weather ReportÂ
The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is expected to favour batters early with good bounce and carry making stroke play easier early on. However, as the match progresses, spinners could come into play due to the dry surface. Teams winning the toss may prefer to chase or bat first as toss will not be a factor in day time one feels. There should be no dew factor for this afternoon clash.
The weather in Ahmedabad looks ideal for cricket with no rain forecast during the match. Clear skies and hot conditions are expected with temperatures around 34-35 degrees Celsius in the evening. Humidity could play a role, but overall, fans can expect a full, uninterrupted contest without weather-related delays.
Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both sidesÂ
Here, we will try and predict the playing XIs of both sides.
South Africa XI: Aiden Markram (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch/George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi.
West Indies XI: Brandon King, Shai Hope (c & wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd/Roston Chase, Jason Holder, Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash
Aiden Markram: The South African captain has been in red hot form in the tournament. Yes, he missed out with bat in hand, but he is too good of a player to keep him down for runs. Markram will look to bounce back and lead from the front against the mighty West Indies side. Markram can be a handy off-spinner and if he uses it against match-ups then he could be the key with the ball too.
Marco Jansen: Marco Jansen was in decent form throughout the tournament. He will be looking to continue his good work that he showed against India where he picked up 4 wickets. Jansen’s confidence must be high and he will like to put that into full use against the West Indies side as taking regular wickets at intervals will be key for South Africa containing the West Indies batters.
Shimron Hetmyer: Shimron Hetmyer is West Indies’ X-factor batting at Number 3. He is a spin basher and can take down Maharaj as it’s a favourable match-up for the southpaw. He has been in tremendous form and carrying the West Indies charge forward. If the Men in Maroon are to upstage the Proteas today, they will have to play out of their skins and Hetmyer can come out there and show his prowess. No ground is big for this left-hander.
Gudakesh Motie: Gudakesh Motie has been in good wicket-taking form this tournament. He picked up crucial wickets against England earlier on and recently picked up 4 against Zimbabwe. With the pitch expected to aid the spinners in this day game, Motie could be a tough proposition and handful to handle in these conditions. He bowls well in the middle overs and will be expected to control things for West Indies.
Key Stats and Records to look forward to in this clashÂ
- West Indies have won 15 and lost 14 of their previous 29 T20IS against South Africa.
- South Africa have however, won four out of their five encounters at the T20 World Cup against the same opposition.
- The exception came in 2016, in Nagpur, where West Indies’ three-wicket victory set them on their way to their second World T20 Title.
Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match
It’s the clash of the heavyweights and there is nothing to choose between the two teams. Both teams are evenly matched and we could be in for a thriller in Ahmedabad. Both match each other and have strengths and weaknesses. Both are unbeaten but one shall lose today. The head-to-head is tight, South Africa has the upper hand in World Cups.
Considering everything it is safe to say that given South Africa’s familiarity and knowledge of Ahmedabad stadium, we feel it gives them a slight edge as West Indies will be playing their first match over here in the tournament. So, South Africa slight favourites, but West Indies can challenge and upstage them as we have match winners on both sides. A thrilling contest awaits us in the afternoon. Let’s wait and watch as to who come out on top.
