New Zealand have entered the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 with a lot of hopes, as they have been consistent performers in the ICC events. They have also started the tournament on a positive note and beaten Afghanistan in Chennai by five wickets. Most of the players did well for them, and the New Zealand produced an all-round display.
Now, it is a time to take the momentum forward and record consecutive wins. New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates will be up against each other on Tuesday at MA Chiadambaram Stadium in Chennai at 3 PM IST. Can the UAE challenge New Zealand? Well, it looks a little difficult, but you never know. as in T20Is, the momentum can shift very fast.
NZ vs UAE : Previous Performances
The margins are very tight in a World Cup when you’re in the ‘Group of Death’. For Afghanistan to repeat their 2024 heroics in 2026, it was vital for them to cross their first hurdle. A match-up against New Zealand in Chennai – a side they beat in the last edition – is something they would have fancied over a match-up against South Africa in Ahmedabad. But now that they’ve slipped, Afghanistan will have to hope one of the two Associate teams can do something that they couldn’t, which is to topple New Zealand.
It’s even more significant now after South Africa’s imposing start to the tournament. If New Zealand prevail on Tuesday and make it two in two, Afghanistan will be under pressure to beat South Africa – a team that mauled them in the 2024 semifinal.
While the possibility of UAE gunning down New Zealand remains dim, it cannot be completely ruled out. The difference between a Pakistan win and an upset on the opening day was one dropped catch. USA had the defending champions India on the mat at 77/6, Nepal almost pulled off a blinder against England before falling four runs short. While these Associate teams couldn’t really get the job done, they have all stretched their much-fancied opponents. UAE themselves have beaten New Zealand in a T20I two and a half years ago. Some of the players who are in the current New Zealand setup played in that fixture.
UAE also gave a good account of themselves in a tri-series last August, pushing Afghanistan and Pakistan in one game each. They will have to draw inspiration from those performances because the batting department remains UAE’s biggest stumbling block. They struggled against Ireland recently and had a shocker against World Cup debutants Italy in a warm-up game, getting bowled out for just 81.
If Chepauk dishes out a batting beauty, UAE’s chances diminish even further. The recent series against India has toughened up New Zealand. Even losing early wickets in the first game against Afghanistan didn’t set them back as they chased down 183 with 13 balls to spare. They will fancy themselves to consolidate their grip on the group.

NZ vs UAE : Pitch and Weather Report
MA Chidambaram Stadium is one of the slowest wickets in India. Spinners thrive here because of the slow wicket. There will be some swing with the new ball, but as the ball gets old, we might see fast turn. Chasing can be a good option, because this is an afternoon game and batting second can be better.
The Chennai pitch had some covering of grass on Sunday and offered encouraging bounce in the early exchanges between New Zealand and Afghanistan before providing some grip to the slower bowlers as well. With this being a day game as well – 3pm IST start – the surface is expected to play in similar fashion. New Zealand’s batting coach confirmed that it will be played on a fresh red soil surface. That’s definitely not good news for UAE.
NZ vs UAE : Big Picture : New Zealand meet unfamiliar opponents in UAE
One misstep against Afghanistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup derailed New Zealand’s entire campaign. Two years later, New Zealand flipped the script despite injuries and illness, their opening win against Afghanistan in the group of death, which also includes South Africa, raising their chances of making the next round. Next up, an unfamiliar opponent: just six players in New Zealand’s 15-man squad have faced UAE in international cricket before.
New Zealand can rely on intel from Mark Chapman, who had come up against UAE more often when he was playing for Hong Kong, and Lockie Ferguson, who is more familiar with the UAE players owing to his stint in the ILT20 as Desert Vipers’ captain. They certainly won’t take UAE lightly – in 2023, a New Zealand side that included the likes of Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert and Chapman was toppled by UAE in Dubai.
For UAE, this is a chance for them to remind the world that they can challenge top teams after they had missed out on qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
UAE have won just one of their six games at the T20 World Cup, but thanks to the ILT20, most of their players are up to speed with the format. Their captain Muhammad Waseem is a serial six-hitter while Alishan Sharafu can be just as explosive and float in the batting line-up. Left-arm spinner Haider Ali can stifle batters with his accuracy in the powerplay while fast bowler Junaid Siddique can nail yorkers.
UAE beat Bangladesh recently in a bilateral T20I series and gave Pakistan a scare in the Asia Cup. They will be hoping to add more scalps in international cricket.
NZ vs UAE : In the Spotlight : Rachin Ravindra and Muhammad Waseem
Rachin Ravindra has had a rough build-up to this T20 World Cup. After illness forced him out of the warm-up game against USA in Navi Mumbai, he bagged a golden duck in New Zealand’s opening game against Afghanistan and conceded 14 runs in the only over he bowled, though he picked up the wicket of a well-set Gulbadin Naib. He will look to make a more substantial contribution on Tuesday.
When Muhammad Waseem gets going, he can cause serious damage, and New Zealand know that as well. The UAE captain has struck 190 sixes in 93 T20I innings and is just 16 away from toppling Rohit Sharma’s all-time T20I record. He continues to be the face of UAE cricket in international cricket and the ILT20.
NZ vs UAE : Vital Stats that matters
- Seifert is three sixes away from 100 T20I sixes while Allen is five away from the mark. Only Martin Guptill, Colin Munro and Phillips have hit 100 or more sixes for New Zealand in the format.
- Since the end of the previous T20 World Cup, Jacob Duffy has taken 23 wickets in the powerplay in 29 innings. Only Zimbabwe’s Richard Ngarava has more wickets (25) than Duffy in the powerplay during this period, with the benefit of more innings.
- Haider Ali’s economy rate of 5.93 in the powerplay is the best among all bowlers in the ILT20 (for a minimum of 20 innings).
- UAE clinched the final spot at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, becoming the 20th and last team to qualify after an eight-wicket win over Japan in the Asia & East Asia-Pacific Qualifier.
- UAE has 11 wins against full-member sides in T20Is – the most by an Associate nation alongside Namibia.
NZ vs UAE : Team News for New Zealand and UAE
New Zealand :
Most of the New Zealand players opted to not train having played their opening fixture just 24 hours ago. Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra, the two players who departed early against Afghanistan, had a long session in the nets with Ish Sodhi at times opting to bowl off spin against the left-hander. They are all set to retain the same XI.
If Michael Bracewell, who is nursing a calf injury, doesn’t recover in time, New Zealand will likely stick with seam-bowling allrounder Jimmy Neesham though he conceded 33 runs in his three wicketless overs against Afghanistan. Finn Allen has been cleared to bat but his shoulder niggle has restricted him from throwing properly in the field. On Sunday, he was mostly at short fine leg and only engaged in under-arm throws.
New Zealand Probable Playing XI : Finn Allen, Tim Seifert (wk), Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner (c), James Neesham, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Jacob Duffy
United Arab Emirates :
On the eve of the match, the Emirates Cricket Board confirmed that Muhammad Zohaib has been sent home for disciplinary reasons. With UAE using Sharafu in the middle order, wicketkeeper-batter Aryansh Sharma will pair up with Waseem at the top. There may be a toss-up between Haider and Simranjeet Singh for the left-arm spinner’s spot. Muhammad Zohaib, who was supposed to slot in at No.3, has been sent back home due to “disciplinary issues,” according to a statement from the ECB. Sohaib Khan could potentially replace him in UAE’s XI.
United Arab Emirates Probable Playing XI : Muhammad Waseem (c), Aryansh Sharma (wk), Alishan Sharafu, Sohaib Khan, Harshit Kaushik, Mayank Kumar, Dhruv Parashar, Muhammad Arfan, Haider Ali, Junaid Siddique, Muhammad Jawadullah
NZ vs UAE : Probable Best Performers of the Match
Probable Best Batter :
Tim Seifert is a good player against spin, and he showed it against Afghanistan. He will be the one to watch out for. For the UAE, Muhammad Waseem is the leading scorer, and he can take on any bowling unit.
Probable Best Bowler :
Lockie Ferguson bowled well against Afghanistan in Chennai. His pace and changeups make it difficult to adjust. For the UAE, Junaid Siddique has been the game-changer with the ball over the years.
NZ vs UAE : Match Prediction for NZ vs UAE
New Zealand won a crucial first game against Afghanistan to put their first points on the board in Group D. What was a close match on paper saw the Black Caps bat excellently to chase down 183 with just over two overs to spare, their highest ever successful run chase in Men’s T20 World Cup history. Tim Seifert was key to them winning, hitting a crucial 65 from 42 balls to help ice the chase.
UAE aren’t as strong a team as Afghanistan and certainly don’t have the individual quality in comparison, so New Zealand would hope for an easier assignment here. Whilst that certainly can’t be guaranteed in a format such as this, any outcome other than victory for Mitchell Santner’s men would be a shock.UAE lack the experience of playing at the highest level. Hence, we predict New Zealand to win this game in Chennai.
