SA20 2026: Ottniel Baartman’s Sensational 5-Wicket Haul Helps Paarl Royals Qualify For Playoffs

Ottniel Baartman stole the show at Supersport Park in Centurion as his 5-wicket haul which included a hat-trick went a long way in helping Paarl Royals secure a 6-wicket win and with a bonus point thus making them the second team to qualify for the playoffs. Ottniel Baartman looked a determined bowler after being snubbed off the T20 World Cup squad and he made the ball do the talking. His 5-wicket haul which included a hat-trick in the 19th over restricted the home team Pretoria Capitals to 127 in 19.1 overs.

Chasing 128 for the win and inside 16 overs for the coveted bonus point, the Paarl Royals rode on a couple of 40s from Rubin Hermann and Daniel Lawrence and a nice unbeaten 28 from David Miller the captain to get over the line in 15.1 overs. Lizaad Williams did pick up 2 wickets but it was too low a score to defend as the Royals got over the line with 29 balls to spare.

With this win, they move upwards to 2nd in the points table with 24 points from 8 games same as Sunrisers Eastern Cape but behind on Net Run Rate. The Royals become the second team to qualify for the playoffs. Capitals are in 3rd place with 20 points from 9 games and have one game remaining to play.

Winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Connor Esterhuizen and keeper batter Shai Hope walked out to bat for Pretoria Capitals while Bjorn Fortuin had the ball in hand for Paarl Royals. The opening duo got off to a fast start aided by extras as loads of wides were dished out to them. Both the openers went at less than run a ball but the Capitals reached 30 in 3 overs. The duo put on 30 for the first wicket before Connor fell for 8 off 13 balls with 2 fours to his name to Ottniel Baartman. Jordan Cox came out to bat next.

Cox did not last long as he fell the next ball to a golden duck as Baartman had two in two balls and was on a hat-trick straightaway. Wihan Lubbe came out to bat next and survived the hat-trick ball. Lubbe and Hope took the Capitals through to the powerplay. The powerplay score was 40/2 in 6 overs and off to a steady start for the Capitals. The duo of Hope and Lubbe put on 13 for the third wicket before Lubbe fell for 9 off 10 balls with one boundary to his name to Bjorn Fortuin. Dewald Brevis came out to bat next.

Hope and Brevis tried to rebuild things for the Capitals but it was a struggle getting to the flow of runs. Hope laboured his way while Brevis too was not at his usual self as he also went at just over run a ball while Hope was below that throughout. The duo put on 32 for the 4th wicket before Brevis fell in the 12th over to Sikandar Raza for 21 off 20 balls with 2 sixes to his name as he was cleaned up by the Zimbabwe captain.

Sherfane Rutherford came out to bat at 75/4 in the 12th over. Rutherford and Hope once again had to rebuild as the former showed some intent out there while Hope was happy to go slow. Rutherford played his shots. The duo added 33 runs for the 5th wicket and played into the death overs phase before Hope was finally dismissed for 25 off 34 balls with one six to his name to Sikandar Raza yet again. Andre Russell came out to bat next.

The duo of Russell and Rutherford added just 2 runs to the score before Rutherford was sent packing for 29 off 20 balls with one four and 3 sixes to his name to Hardus Viljoen. Keshav Maharaj the captain came out to bat next. Russell did bulk of the scoring and tried to build a partnership. The duo added 16 runs for the 7th wicket before Russell fell for 15 off 11 balls with 2 sixes to his name to Baartman. This is where the Baartman show began.

Lizaad Williams came in next and was cleaned up first ball for a golden duck as Baartman again had two in two balls and just like in the 4th over of the innings he was on a hat-trick. Lungi Ngidi came out to bat next and the hat-trick moment came as Ngidi was caught and bowled for a golden duck as Baartman completed a famous hat-trick as the Capitals went from 126/6 to 126/9 in a matter of 3 balls. Gideon Peters came out to bat next and survived the rest of the over.

In the first ball of the 20th over with the addition of a solitary run, Maharaj the captain fell to Viljoen for 1 off 2 balls as the Capitals were bowled out for a mere 127 in 19.1 overs with Peters remaining unbeaten on 0 off 3 balls. As many as 19 extras were gifted by the fielding side which included a staggering 15 wides.

Ottniel Baartman was the pick of the bowlers for Paarl Royals finishing with magical figures of 5/16 in 4 overs including a hat-trick. He was ably supported by Hardus Viljoen who finished with 2/17 in 3.1 overs and Sikandar Raza who finished with 2/29 in 4 overs. Bjorn Fortuin finished with 1/25 in 4 overs. Delano Potgieter finished with 0/12 in 2 overs. Waqar Salamkheil gave away 25 runs in 2 overs. This meant that Paarl Royals needed 128 runs to win and inside 16 overs for the coveted bonus point.

Chasing 128 for the win, Lhuan dre Pretorius and Asa Tribe walked out to bat for the Paarl Royals while Lungi Ngidi had ball in hand for Pretoria Capitals. The chase got off to a shaky start as the opening duo mustered only 5 runs before Pretorius fell for 1 off 3 balls to Lizaad Williams caught right in front of the stumps LBW. Rubin Hermann came out to bat next. Hermann was on the move starting well while Tribe played second fiddle. The duo added 12 more to the score before Tribe fell for 5 off 9 balls to Williams yet again.

Daniel Lawrence came into bat with the score at 17/2 in the 4th over. Lawrence and Hermann combined together to build a stand with not much pressure of the asking rate. So, they took their time in initially and then shifted gears slowly. The powerplay score was 40/2 in 6 overs for the Royals as well. They carried on batting after that as well as the partnership flourished and in this small chase all it needed was one good partnership to have you on track.

The duo of Hermann and Lawrence did just that and played the middle phase really well. The duo added 52 runs in 33 balls to take the game away from the Capitals before Hermann fell in the 9th over for 46 off 29 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes to his name as he was the aggressor of the two to Gideon Peters.

David Miller the captain walked out to bat with the score at 69/3 in 8.5 overs. Miller and Lawrence stitched together another important stand at the right tempo so that the Royals can not only win but secure the bonus point which they did in the end thanks to this partnership. The duo of Lawrence and Miller added another vital stand of 57 off 36 balls with both contributing equally with Miller plying at a higher strike rate. The duo literally sealed the deal for the Royals but with 2 needed for the win, Lawrence fell for 41 off 32 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes to his name to Lungi Ngidi as the bowler cleaned him up.

Sikandar Raza came out to bat with the score at 126/4 in 14.5 overs. He took a single off the last ball of the over to bring the scores level and got off the mark. Then he in start of the 16th over, took another single to complete the formalities as the Paarl Royals won this contest by 6 wickets with 29 balls to spare. Miller finished with an unbeaten 28 off 16 balls with 5 fours to his name while Raza remained unbeaten on 2 off 2 balls. 5 extras conceded by the fielding side.

It was a very low score to defend for the Pretoria Capitals and they tried as much as they could. Lizaad Williams finished with 2/28 in 3 overs. Lungi Ngidi finished with 1/24 in 4 overs. Gideon Peters finished with 1/27 in 3.1 overs. Andre Russell went for 32 in 3 overs while captain Keshav Maharaj bowled 2 overs and gave away 13 runs. So, Paarl Royals won by 6 wickets with 29 balls to spare and secured a bonus point. Ottniel Baartman was adjudged the Player of the Match.

With this win, Paarl Royals are in second place with 24 points from 8 games behind Sunrisers Eastern Cape on Net Run Rate while Pretoria Capitals are in 3rd place with 20 points from 9 games. There are 5 league games to go in SA20 2026.

What Lies Ahead

Next-up is Match 26 of the SA20 2026 as MI Cape Town the defending champions will host Sunrisers Eastern Cape from Newlands in Cape Town on Friday 16th January, 2026 from 9 PM IST onwards. The defending champions are at the bottom place in points table with 10 points from 8 games while Eastern Cape have already qualified for the playoffs with 24 points from 8 games and will look to secure a top-2 finish to get two bites in the cherry for the finals.

It is needless to say that this is a must-win clash for defending champions as a loss here will be curtains for them for sure. The two-time champions and last year’s runner-up are well-placed in the points table and through to the playoffs. It might look a David vs Goliath battle according to the points table but anything can happen on a game of cricket.
