As the first T20I match between South Africa and India is officially over, it was pretty clear that the Proteas continued struggling to find any success with the bat. A unit that had already shown a few issues in their recent ODI series, this side has not been able to find any consistency and have seemed to lose a ton of confidence during recent times. Seeing that they were missing some key pieces like Ryan Rickleton and Tony De Zorzi, it was supposed to be an advantage for this side, but ended up falling down. With Aiden Markram leading this side, there feels like something missing in his leadership which has costed them in all white-ball formats recently.
Knowing that this side was supposed to be built on power, this is something they were truly expecting would really take an uptick and lead them to massive scores. Given that they only had to chase down 176 for victory, the collapse felt real as no one could really contribute when others were struggling. Facing an Indian bowling attack that featured Varun Chakravarty, Arshdeep Singh, and Jasprit Bumrah, their dominance took over this game and slowly became the major factor that helped them win. Hoping to fix it for the next match, it will be interesting to see what changes they make and if those could truly have an impact on this side’s performance moving forward.
Top-Order Problems Continue For This Unit After Another Tough Outing
Looking at the top batters in this South Africa unit, it has become pretty clear that they can’t get good starts and haven’t been able to take advantage of powerplay overs. Opener Quinton De Kock ended up leaving very early after being removed for 2 balls on an amazing ball bowled by Arshdeep Singh. Knowing that Aiden Markram was on the other side, he started building a strong innings after hitting one four and six. Despite creating a wonderful 16-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs, their next wicket ended up being Stubbs after he hit a shot right at the hands of Jitesh Sharma. Seeing that he got out on an outside edge again, this has been a consistent problem for him many times.
As Markram was still in, there was a lot of hope since he is someone who could play aggressively, while also having great touch. Seeing that he could have developed something with Brevis, this was much needed since South Africa had already found themselves in a 16/2 hole. Knowing that Brevis is a complete game-changer, he was anticipated to make an immediate impact, and that happened after he smashed a six, while hitting a couple powerful boundaries. With Markram doing his job on the order, it was all looking great until the captain ended up getting out and made this unit three-down with just 40 runs on the board within the powerplay.
Middle And Back Batsmen Couldn’t Have Much Pressure Put On Towards Then End
Seeing that the Proteas back-order really struggled to do much either, it became a real issue after seeing that they couldn’t produce much either. With David Miller really having a tough debut, as he had to have a much hyped return, it will be a problem going into the future because Donovan Ferreira hasn’t been able to convert as a big hitter either. Seeing that Miller ended up getting out for one run on just three balls, Donovan Feirrera fell right after him and made this unit 50/5. With Ferreira only finishing at 5, he was just able to hit one boundary and kept being under that 100 strike rate throughout this match, while expecting Marco Jansen to take a heavy load.
Knowing that Brevis and Jansen were the real last hopes, losing the left-handed all-rounder at 6 down made this game almost finished. As Marco Jansen is that one piece whose really proven strength and a great command for connecting on long-range shots, it looked like that was happening again with his initial two sixes. Having Brevis on the other side playing with pure power as well, they built an 18-run partnership before Jansen got out to Chakravarty. With Brevis being the next wicket to fall, it almost became the end as Keshav Maharaj was their last potential batting option. With him also going and Nortje being a big piece that left, this team got completely bowled out for 74 runs.
What Is Expected For The 2nd T2oI Match?
With the second match being a few days away, it will be pretty important for this South Africa unit to provide some type of powerful batting performance so they can get a high score. As they play a very strong batting side in India, this is important to match their scores and potentially have something that is undefendable. Seeing that Aiden Markram will most likely improve upon his performance, there should be more boundaries from classy Tristan Stubbs as well. With the middle-order pieces in Donovan Ferreira and Dewald Brevis already under fire after having trouble in finishing many matches, it will be interesting to see how much better they can do under pressure versus this star-studded Indian bowling.
