Heading into the second match of these African Qualifiers, one side was able to completely take over all aspects of this game and look much stronger than the other. With Nigeria coming in as a team that has just continued developing, they were able to come out victorious by 9 wickets, backed by some great bowling during their first innings.
Given that Nigeria had only won one match last time they were at this stage, this side looks much improved and should continue being a lethal threat for anyone that comes up on their schedule. As Sylvester Okpe once again led this side, he showed amazing leadership and the true captain he could be in major tournaments like this, while inspiring everyone else.
Meanwhile, Malawi had quite a disappointing match as they really seemed to be lost on either end of play. A group that had many expectations coming in after some key victories, this was definitely not their best effort, and now will have to turn around to play much tougher Namibia in two matches.
With them already being on the brink of elimination, they are trying to experience a cricketing growth in their nation, but first will have to pick up vital victories against some of the bigger nations. Seeing that Mozzam Ali Baig is their current captain, he hasn’t lived up to the hype and really needs to improve on his ability of setting fields properly, while giving his bowlers more chances.
Malawi: Batting Unit Was Fully Destroyed During Their First Innings
After looking at Malawi’s batting performance today, it is very concerning to see where this unit’s main threat will come from. Opener Aaftab Limdwala didn’t look dangerous at all up front like he usually does, and instead was getting fooled by Nigerian bowlers on where to attack.
Someone who finished with just 9 runs and took 15 deliveries to do it, this is a real problem during the powerplay, since Sami Sohail was also removed after just three deliveries. In a world of trouble, their one-down piece, named Gift Kankosho, was also gone for no runs and has struggled to find any consistency during recent times. With Salim Nihute getting out too, it really put this Malawi side in a tough situation at 18/4.
With Captain Mozzam Ali Baig looking lost in the crease and not able to maneuver for sweep shots, wickets kept falling until this side 38/7 and got a big partnership. One that created almost 40 runs, Suhail Vayani was a massive part of it with his 27-run knock plus two boundaries, while Daniel Jakiel played in a more controlled way.
Looking like they were going to help Malawi get past 100 runs, things took another turn after Vayani got out, and they were stranded at 77/8. Although a few of their bowlers played some quick-fire shots and looked to make the score more competitve, this side was fully removed for 88 with the run-out that got rid of Chisomo Tchale.
Nigeria: Bowlers Really Created A Trap For Their Opponents’ Batters
Looking at Nigeria, it was a strong all-around effort by their bowlers to really create problems for the opposite team in this match. One unit that keeps gaining experience after every time they play, Ridwan Abdulkareem was once again a very important piece with three wickets, while just allowing 6 an over in his full quota.
The 24-year-old offbreak spinner really knows how to turn the ball and will be impactful when this side has to go up against some of the more top-notch groups. Captain Sylvester Okpe was massive in his four overs as well, since this was someone who just allowed 7 runs, plus had another wicket, which took out Malawi’s captain.
Peter Aho was their main medium pacer and really changed directions to force batsmen to swing plus miss. Although his first few overs were a little expensive, he really brought the rate down and just allowed 18 throughout the whole evening. Someone who keeps getting trusted, he will make a real impact going further, while Cheimile Udekwe is very important as well.
It was clear that left-handed pacer Prosper Useni also had a mission today, and it was to limit runs, while also breaking the first partnership. Lastly, Isaac Okpe rounded out this bowling attack extremely well and didn’t seem to get overexcited by the moment, while picking up the final wicket.
Nigeria: Batters Finished This Match Off Very Fast And Showed Great Momentum
For Nigeria, their batsmen did a great job of chasing down the target and really boosting their run-rate to something that will help them make it into semi-final action. With openers Sulaimon Runsewe and Selim Salau going for 56 combined runs, they both showed a great ability to hit the ball against any bowlers.
Talking specifically about Runsewe, he got to his half-century in style, while hitting 9 boundaries all over the ground. Someone who was in control all afternoon long, it seemed like the deliveries were just flying out of his bat with perfect timing and innovation. Someone who is also known for his long-ball hitting style, he tried it a couple of times today, even though none went for six.
Opposite him, Selim Salau also showed consistency and was able to put together a strong 26-run knock in their 50-run partnership. Although his wicket unfortunately ended on a run-out, his ability to swing in open directions and create unique striking abilities really helped Nigeria score fast.
With him losing his wicket, the third important batsman who finished of the job was Joseph Adedji as he scored 12 runs during a short period, while opening the face of his bat. Going at a strike-rate of 150, he was 2nd on the team behind Salau and really helped Nigeria reach that 92/1 total with relative ease, plus no drama situations during the middle.
Malawi: Bowlers Were Getting Absolutely Dispatched In Limited Overs
With Malawi only having 92 runs to defend with, their bowling didn’t look strong at all and, in fact, caused the game to finish much faster than expected. Starting with Daniel Jakiel, he had an economy of nearly 13 and provided no wicket-taking threat, while missing his line every time.
Someone who normally doesn’t do this, it was a bit odd to see him perform like this, while Kevin Tchuila also went for over 8 runs per over. Although Suhail Vayani may have had 4 overs of limiting runs, their top bowlers really gave him limited chance to make an impact, while also putting captain Mozzam Baig’s two overs of a 7.5 economy to complete waste.
