India’s backs were against the wall at 0/2 in their second innings of the 4th Test at Old Trafford. There was a calm and composed partnership of 188 runs in 417 balls between Shubman Gill and KL Rahul not only steadied the innings but also drew praise from former cricketers for its sheer resilience. Test cricket is often described as a game of patience, character & moments that can change the course of a match in the blink of an eye.
On Day 4 of the 4th Test between India and England at Old Trafford, India found themselves in a dire situation. Chasing a deficit and reeling at 0/2, the visitors were staring at a possible innings defeat. The conditions were tricky, the crowd was charged up, and England’s bowlers were on the prowl.
WV Raman lauds the batting partnership of KL Rahul & Shubman Gill
Former Indian Cricketer and opener WV Raman termed this partnership fantastic and productive, he felt that this partnership truly frustrated the England bowlers. Ben Stokes, who was their guiding force, had bagged a 5-fer in the first Innings, was not totally fit enough to bowl like he would have to.
“That was the stroke of luck India needed. Had that edge carried, the game could’ve ended right there. Cricket is often about such moments. When you’re in trouble, one partnership, one dropped chance, or one misfield can shift the momentum. That’s exactly what happened here,” said WV Raman.
KL Rahul & Shubman Gill’s mental toughness peaked
The Shubman Gill- KL Rahul stand, while not flashy, was filled with resolve. They absorbed pressure with calm defense and counter-punched just enough to keep the scoreboard ticking. It wasn’t just about runs, it was about time, temperament, and a touch of fortune.
At a time when the pitch had enough to offer for the bowlers and the Indian team had their backs to the wall, KL Rahul & Shubman Gill didn’t just survive, they fought back. Their shot selection was prudent, their running between the wickets sharp, and more importantly, their body language firm and positive.
For KL Rahul, who has often been criticized for not converting starts, this was an innings of responsibility. For Shubman Gill, who had got three low scores after an exceptional start to the series, it was a step toward redemption. Together, they scripted a revival that might just prove pivotal in the context of the series.
The partnership not only blunted the new ball but also helped India inch toward a more stable position in the game. It showed maturity beyond numbers a combination of old-school Test match grit and modern-day match awareness. As India walked off the field at the end of the day with their wickets intact and the scoreboard no longer looking disastrous, the sense of relief was evident. They had absorbed the pressure, turned the tide, and most importantly, sent a message they weren’t going down without a fight.
Exciting Oval Test match on cards
The draw at Old Trafford now sets up a cracking finale to the five-match series. And if India goes on to clinch it, historians might look back at this gritty partnership as the moment the momentum turned. In the grand narrative of Test cricket, not all heroic knocks come with hundreds. Sometimes, they come wrapped in resilience, stitched together with defiance, and sealed with a dash of luck.
With the 5th Test match commencing from 31st July at the Oval, it will be fascinating to see whether India can square the series 2-2. India’s dream of winning the Test series is over now, but they can level the series. India’s batters & bowlers performed in unison in the 4th Test match, & if a similar performance is done by India’s contingent then they would be invincible at Oval.
