Rishabh Pant left fans on the edge of their seats with his audacious strokeplay during the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. The 25-year-old Rishabh Pant etched his name in the record books by slamming hundreds in each innings of the game, becoming just the second gloveman in history to achieve the unique feat.
Rishabh Pant got involved in crucial partnerships in both innings of the Headingley Test, first with captain Shubman Gill and later with KL Rahul. He added 209 runs for the fourth wicket with Gill in the first innings, playing an innings of 134 (178), with the help of 12 fours and six sixes.
During his innings, he also left behind legendary MS Dhoni, registering the most centuries by an India wicketkeeper in Tests. Later in the second innings, Rishabh Pant added 195 runs for the fourth wicket with KL Rahul, with his innings of 118 (140), studded with 15 fours and three sixes. Unfortunately, his career-best performance ended up in a losing cause as England chased down a massive score of 371 in the fourth innings to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Rishabh Pant’s fearless strokeplay kept the Leeds crowd on the edge of their seats, energizing the contest with a brand of batting rarely seen in the longest format. However citing his importance in the long series and his workload mangement where in the 1st Test he was on the field for all the 5 days including his batting and wicket keeping , Former Indian pacer Dodda Ganesh believes that with Dhruv Jurel in the squad reliving Rishabh Pant from his wicket keeping duties would help him manage his workload.
Dodda Ganesh is a firm believer that Rishabh Pant should not keep wickets
Former cricketer Dodda Ganesh believes Rishabh Pant should not keep wickets in India’s second Test of the ongoing five-match away Test series against England. He opined that it would be a good idea for Pant to play as a pure batter in the upcoming encounter. The 51-year-old suggested that India should bring in Dhruv Jurel into the playing XI as a designated wicketkeeper. Proposing a suggestion to take some load off Pant’s shoulders, here’s what Ganesh wrote on the microblogging platform X:
“Won’t be a bad idea to hand over the wicket keeping duties to Jurel and play Pant as a pure batter. Thoughts?”
Team India vice-captain Rishabh Pant was the top performer with the bat in the side’s recently concluded Test series opener against England at Headingley, Leeds. He became the first Indian wicketkeeper to hit twin centuries in a Test, registering scores of 134 and 118.
However, his heroics ultimately went in vain as England clinched an emphatic five-wicket victory. The hosts recorded the 10th highest fourth-innings run chase in Test cricket, going past the 371-run target on Day 5. Meanwhile, Dhruv Jurel was part of the India A side that played two unofficial Tests against England Lions ahead of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He looked in fine batting form in the two games.
Dhruv Jurel finished with scores of 94 and 53* in the first fixture, while he scored 53 and 28 in the second contest. The stumper made his Test debut in February 2024 and has 202 runs to his name across six innings at an average of 40.40.
Rishabh Pant’s batting is a thrilling mix of audacity, instinct, and fearless improvisation, an unpredictable force that often leaves both fans and opponents stunned. In the first Test against England at Leeds, Pant’s high-risk, high-reward approach paid rich dividends, as he hammered centuries in both innings, 134 and 118, each laced with explosive stroke play that defied conventional Test cricket norms.
His aggressive intent from ball one not only shifted momentum but also gave India the time and scoreboard pressure needed to stay competitive in a hard-fought contest. Though India narrowly lost the match, Rishabh Pant’s counter-attacking brilliance proved to be a vital asset, keeping England’s bowlers on the defensive and creating windows of opportunity for India. As the teams gear up for the second Test at Edgbaston, Pant’s dynamic style will again be crucial.
With England expected to maintain their attacking mindset, Rishabh Pant’s fearless batting could turn the tide. His unpredictability is his greatest strength, a wildcard that makes India’s batting lineup infinitely more dangerous and gives the team a genuine X-factor heading into the rest of the series and for the same reason the team management should think Rishabh Pant as a pure batter and relive him from his wicket keeping duties for the remainder of 4 matches in order to maintain his workload management.
