ICC WTC 2023-25: James Anderson’s Harsh Take On Current WTC Cycle System

The former England fast bowler James Anderson shared his vision on the current situation of England in the World Test Championship 2025. James Anderson feels that winning the test match was not England’s top priority. England have not even qualified for the ICC WTC final even once raises a lot of questions about the team dynamics.

James Anderson’s unique take on WTC cycle

As per Anderson, England has played to stay stable in the field in recent situations. England has been going through some tough matches during this test series, whereas, country like South Africa had selected for the final just after playing two test matches.

Anderson felt that, being a northern hemisphere team, English cricketers play more than any player in the cricket game. However, they are struggling to keep themselves fit on the ground, and Anderson is concerned. He said,

“Obviously, you are trying to win every game, trying to win every series. But I don’t know. It hasn’t been something like getting into the World Test Championship final. I think the difficult thing for England is that, being a northern hemisphere team, we play 12 months a year. Play much more cricket than anyone else. It is hard to keep players fit.”

The 42-year-old Anderson felt that winning the series was not top of the priority list. Currently, engaging people to watch seems more important than what James Anderson thought. He quoted via Talksport,

“You look at the current cycle and South Africa got into the final and the teams they played, they played two Test match series against teams that are not necessarily the strongest Test teams in the world. We have five Test matches in India, we are playing a minimum of three-Test series, so we have played a lot more games and in difficult conditions,

“I just feel like it is something that is not top of the priority list. Under the current regime, they want to be entertaining, they want to promote Test cricket and encourage people to watch, but at the moment, the Test Championship does not seem the priority.”

James Anderson furious with the WTC Cycle and Test matches

The ex-English cricketer was agitated over an unbalanced number of matches contested by all the teams of the World Test Championship. According to him, the administrator somehow couldn’t handle it. It is unfair, and it must be taken care of.

He addressed his anger by saying,

“Can you imagine the Premier League where Manchester City play 60 games and Nottingham Forest play 12? It is very flawed, and that needs to be figured out. It needs to be fairer, and then maybe more of the bigger nations that don’t play a lot would be more interested in it,” Anderson said.

The test championship final 2025 will be contested between South Africa and Australia on 11th June at Lord’s. South Africa is presently in winning mode. Australia, on the other hand, out of 40 test series against South Africa, has won 18 matches up until now. Both teams are in beast mode to gain victory at any expense.
