DC vs MI: “If The Team Doesn’t Win Then There’s No Value Of Knock”- Karun Nair Dejected Despite Playing A Helluva Of Knock

Karun Nair IPL knock on Sunday evening at the Arun Jaitley Stadium had all the makings of a match-winning effort. Returning to the league after a two-year hiatus, Karun Nair played a blistering innings of 89 off just 40 balls for Delhi Capitals. However, his standout performance was not enough as Delhi Capitals suffered a dramatic collapse and lost to Mumbai Indians by 12 runs.

Despite putting up a powerful 119-run stand for the second wicket with Abhishek Porel, the team crumbled from 119/1 in 10.1 overs to 192 all out. Nair, who was brought in as an impact player due to an injury to Faf du Plessis, expressed disappointment despite his personal achievement.

“We play to win the match, so there is disappointment. And no matter how much we score, if the team does not win, then there is no value of it. For me, the team’s win was very important, and it did not happen. But it’s a learning, and we will go forward, and I hope I will keep performing like this, and we will win,” Karun Nair said in the post match press conference.

Karun Nair IPL Knock: A Brief on His Comeback Innings

Karun Nair, who had been out of the IPL since 2022, made a strong return, displaying exceptional timing, confidence, and shot selection. He was especially aggressive against MI pacer Jasprit Bumrah, hitting him for multiple boundaries in the powerplay.

“Obviously, I was confident, and I was playing; I was in the flow, and I didn’t want to stop the flow… he is the best bowler at the moment in world cricket… I just backed myself,” said Karun.

The innings marked a potential turning point in Nair’s career resurgence, especially after his good run in domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he amassed 779 runs and a whopping average of 389.5

Karun Nair’s IPL Knock Couldn’t Prevent Delhi’s Collapse

Delhi Capitals’ batting collapse was as sudden as it was shocking. From a dominating position, they lost nine wickets for just 74 runs as got bundled out for. Nair admitted that the inability to build partnerships and regular wickets tilted the game in MI’s favour.

“We lost wickets at regular intervals, so it was difficult for us in the end. But having said that, they (MI) also bowled well and put us under pressure,” he added.

The 33-year-old emphasized learning from the defeat and focusing on upcoming matches to sustain their momentum.

Mentally Ready and Waiting for the Right Chance

Karun credited his mental preparation and readiness for being able to seize the opportunity in the absence of Faf du Plessis.

“So mentally I was ready and looking forward to the chance whenever it came. So I am really happy that I got the opportunity,”

While fans and experts call for his national team to return, Karun focuses on one match at a time.

“For me, right now, the most important thing is that whatever opportunities I get, I have to fully utilise them,”

Hardik Pandya acknowledged that Karun Nair made life tough for the Mumbai Indians (MI) bowlers during their IPL 2025 match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. Nair delivered an explosive innings, smashing 89 runs from just 40 deliveries, including 12 boundaries and five sixes. Despite his heroics, DC fell short by 12 runs as MI emerged victorious.

Chasing a target of 206, Nair played a pivotal role by stitching a 119-run partnership with Abhishek Porel for the second wicket. One of the standout moments came when Nair aggressively targeted MI’s strike bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, collecting 18 runs in a single over. He reached his half-century in only 22 balls and appeared set for a century before Mitchell Santner ended his innings.

This win might give MI the self belief back as their next encounter is against SRH on 17th April at Mumbai. DC on the other hand have suffered their maiden defeat in the tournament and their next clash is against DC on 16th April at Delhi which is their back to back home game which will give them a chance to bounce back.
